Join actors, musicians, and Dr Matthew Green for an immersive guided walking tour of London’s original – and best – coffeehouses. From Cornhill’s labyrinth of medieval streets to the gleaming steps of St Paul’s Cathedral, witness how the ‘bitter Mohammedan gruel’ transformed the face of the city, brought people together, and inspired brilliant ideas that shape the world we live in today. As featured in the Guardian and on the BBC. Free shots of gritty black coffee, brewed 17th-century style, included!

This was an exceptional tour, and Matthew Green, Oxford Ph.D, was an amazing guide. He has such a wealth of knowledge of his city as well as the role that drinks have played in the development of London. From coffee to chocolate to ale, wine, and gin & tonic, he regaled us with vivid tales illustrating that time period. It... More

Dr. Matthew Green, author of London: A Travel Guide Through Time, is an intelligent and charming Oxford-educated PhD who clearly loves his city. My colleague and I arranged a private, combined coffeehouse and Fleet Street walking tour and were absolutely enchanted by the walk, the commentary and by Dr. Green's ability to make the past come to light so vividly.... Wouldn’t wish to deprive the groves of academe of the uniquely talented Dr Matthew Green, but couldn’t help thinking as he led us like the Pied Piper through the lanes and alleys of the ‘City’ last Saturday that our Parliament really needs people like him: knowledgeable, insightful and supremely articulate, someone blessed with the most engaging manner, sparkling wit, superb... We did the coffee house tour with a group of friends from work. We all work for a company that traces its roots back to the coffee houses of the 1700s so we had a very personal journey from the start of the coffee revlution to the very site our company started in. Amazing energy and information, worderfully hammed acting... More

A walk around the City of London understanding the history of how coffee first came to the UK and the establishment of the first coffee houses back in the 1700s. Sounds interesting enough, but when you are escorted by someone who knows how to relate a good yarn, and when you find yourself meeting characters straight out of the period... More

This is a fascinating journey around the streets of the city of London. Dr Green's passion for the history of London is infectious. The 17th century is brought alive and you'll come away with some incredible facts and insights. I went just before Christmas and the drunken antics of city workers were even worked into the dialogue in a timely... More

This tour was highly recommended to me by a friend who is a London Blue Badge guide: so he really knows everyone and everything that's out there. He was spot on; this was simultaneously one of the most informative and entertaining historical walks I've been on. Dr. Matthew Green does an incredible job of bringing 17th century London to life,... More

I would strongly urge anyone to go on this tour for an off the beaten track tour of the history or London coffee shops. This tour is not just about coffee but gives a very vivid and fascinating account of 18th Century London life. Dr. Matthew Green is an expert in the period and not the boffin you might expect...
