The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

A Beautiful Statue - A Grand Memorial

While we had strolled St James Park many times, we were most often cutting through to Green Park, either to, or from Mayfair. In November, we did a bit more of a stroll, and stopped at the Queen Victoria Memorial, on our way to Buckingham Palace, and then to Knightsbridge.

While I had seen the Memorial, from a distance, this visit gave me the opportunity to admire it, although with crowds (not sure why they were all there, but there must have been some event, or parade, and we could not walk The Mall, so had to deviate across the lawns in the park). The Memorial is much larger, than it had appeared with my previous glimpses, and in the Autumn light, the gilt figures atop the pylon really stood out. Also, what was left of Autumn color in the trees, added a warmth to the Memorial.

I also had the opportunity to appreciate the detail around the base, which I had not observed before.

This is a great work of art, with the marble carvings, and then the metal work, both atop, and in strategic places around the base.

Lovely to behold, though difficult to really see and appreciate, with the extreme crowds. When we return in April, for another stay at the Conrad St James, I will return, and not on a day with an event, or parade.

The memorial is the roundabout in front of Buckingham Palace. The entrance to the base of the memorial is from the Palace end of the memorial. The golden figures on top of the memorial are quite eye-catching. Queen Victoria herself is sitting down on the mall end of the memorial.
We came after the changing of the guards and it wasn't super busy. It was easy enough to walk around with a stroller. Lots of nicely carved statues in one area to look at.

Appropriately, given their contribution to Great Britain and the then Empire, the memorials to Queen Victoria and to Prince Albert are two of the most spectacular in London. Both are not only splendid sculptural ensembles, but they are linked to urban planning in a grand way that we seem to have forgotten how to do.

The Albert Memorial stands at the north end of the series of museums, colleges and other institutions in South Kensington and, being designed in the 1860's, is High Gothic in style. Victoria's memorial sits in front of Buckingham Palace at the end of the Mall and is exuberant Edwardian neoclassical in style.

I visited today on my way to work when it was pretty deserted and it was doubly impressive under the grey autumn skies.

If you are visiting London, make sure you visit both memorials.

We visited this memorial with our three children (aged between 1 and 6), and they loved it. Our 4 and 6 year old sat and drew Queen Victoria and wanted to know all about it. It’s an iconic monument to Queen Victoria right in front of the Queen’s London residence and worth a stroll across the road from Buckingham Palace to see its majestic statues up close.

It is a beautiful when photographed against a clear blue morning sky.

The upper terrace level is a good place to view the Changing of the Guards Ceremony.

The smaller sculptures and reliefs that form the base are also beautiful.

Standing at the end of The Mall, right in front of Buckingham Palace, is an 82ft marble memorial to Queen Victoria.

It is one of the most iconic sights in London, perhaps due to its proximity to the aforementioned Buckingham Palace, and remains the tallest monument to a British monarch in the country.

The principle part of the memorial comprises of a central column (or pylon) and is made of Pentelic marble. Atop this is a gilded bronze representation of a winged Victory, whilst below are a series of smaller accompanying statues representing personifications of Constancy and Courage, as well as two eagles with their wings outstretched. These are made of Lasa marble.

Below these statues is a statue of Queen Victoria herself, facing symbolically towards the City, flanked by representations of Motherhood, Truth and Justice - all synonymous with Queen Victoria.

It was King Edward VII who proposed the building of this monument and it was agreed that it would not be paid for by the government. Instead it was funded by various countries across the Empire/Commonwealth as well as donations by members of the public.

Sadly King Edward VII never got to see it dedicated officially as he passed away before. Instead it was King George V who had that particular honour.

We've all seen this memorial, be it whenever we walk down The Mall, or watching the various televised events from Buckingham Palace over the years, as it is very much a focal points for the throngs of people that congregate at these events.

This is a stunning monument(s) and is every much a part of London as Big Ben or Marble Arch, and is one of those incredible places that I hardly need to sell to you.

The Queen Victoria Memorial is located directly in front of Buckingham Palace. A bronze angel on the top is impressive. The area is apparently closed to traffic on Sundays and holidays, which makes it very easy to explore the area.

A stunning memorial topped with a gilded statue pay tribute to Queen Victoria. This large memorial is directly in from of Buckingham Palace and the Canada Gate and cannot be missed. While not as interesting as some of the public sculpture in Italy, it is tastefully carved with a fair amount of interesting detail.

The Victoria Memorial was inaugurated in 1911, being the tallest monument dedicated to a king or queen in England. It is more than 25 meters high, made with marble and gilded bronze. It weighs 2300 tons. It is located in front of Buckingham Palace. It stands out for its brightness and beauty, since from afar we can see the figure of the Winged Victory on a globe. In the corners of the monument we find large statues with lions. A few meters away we enjoyed the changing of the guard and the entire surroundings of the place. London surprises at every turn.

The wedding cake, this is the curious nickname given to it by Londoners for its vague resemblance to the sumptuous tiered wedding cakes. At the top, instead of the newlyweds, is the golden statue of Winged Victory, while at the bottom stands Queen Victoria surrounded by a series of marble sculptures. The entire sculpture group, which includes other bronze statues all around, is an exaltation of the Queen and the British Empire. The beautiful and detailed monument is majestically positioned between The Mall and Buckingham Palace.
