    Well worth the visit.
Visited with a friend from abroad in early March. The gardens were not yet in bloom but one can imagine them being very beautiful in a few weeks time. The palace is a stunning example of an Art Deco grand residence and a 15th century Great Hall. Well worth the visit. All the volunteers working there are extremely helpful and the audio guide gives lots of interesting info. As it was off season so there was lots of room in the car park. Tickets and a beautifully photographed guide book are available online.
Thank you Joan for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace, it's great to hear you enjoyed it so much. We have passed on your kind words to our fabulous team of volunteers.

    Half Term
We went as a family during February Half Term. We fist had lunch while our 9yr old son played in the play area. We loved the food and he loved playing. We then visited the Palace and did the Stamp Trail. It is a unique place to visit and worth it. Even my 9yr old enjoyed and was amazed at the decorations. The staff were so helpful and kind.
Thank you for your FIVE STAR review of Eltham Palace and Gardens, it's great to hear we have a nine year old fan of Art Deco!

This house and gardens has the Wow factor
Beautiful house and gardens. This is the very first place I bring all my visitors from abroad as it has such wow factor. So my great nice aged 20 visited the week before last from Los Angeles. She loved it. The volunteers are all very helpful and interesting to talk to. This is a real gem. Easy parking and a great shop.
Thank you Candice for your FIVE STAR review of Eltham Palace. We love welcoming holidaymakers from abroad with great transport links to and from central London by rail to Eltham or Mottingham and a number of local bus services including the 161.

    Beautiful and interesting visit
We really enjoyed our day at Eltham Palace. Such an interesting place with an audio tour, beautiful gardens and interiors. The staff were friendly and helpful. We also had a tasty lunch in the restaurant. I would highly recommend it 😍
Thank you so much for taking the time to post your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace. The cafe source some lovely local fresh produce so it's great to hear it's going down so well.

I first saw Eltham Palace on one of George Clarke’s programmes, it fascinated me and I knew I wanted to visit it, it is a lovely place so peaceful and the gardens are lovely and from the gardens in the distance you can see the Shard and the “Walkie Talkie” building the train from Charing Cross to Eltham was very quick and just a 15 minute walk from the station. The weather on the day was beautiful couldn’t have been better! The staff were lovely even when my relative picked up a plate from the table and set the alarm off!! The talk we listened to was also very informative…
Thank you Ann for your great review. As you mentioned, we have a great view of the city from here which is about 8 miles as the crow flies and if you look carefully. you can see the dome of St Pauls.

    Art deco delight
Firstly the bad. No proper directions on leaving the train station( leave station go to main road and turn left, follow road till you see car park signposted.) Gripe over, the rest was excellent, friendly staff, delightful staff, lovely gardens, great kids area and wonderful house. Well worth the visit. English heritage members get in free, a bonus
Thank you for your review of your visit to Eltham Palace and sorry you lost your way. We are signposted from Eltham Station so take a left on the main road, cross over to the right at the traffic lights and walk down Court Yard to the moat bridge entrance. From Mottingham Station, turn left on the main road and keep walking (ignoring the 'Eltham Palace' signpost indicating a left turn) until you reach the car park on the left and walk to the Visitor Centre at the end of the road.

    Fascinating place
Really enjoyed the Palace and Gardens. Audio/visual guide was excellent and enhanced our visit - we listened to every recording. Although a lot of the furniture and decorations were not original, they were faithful reproductions as seen in old photographs/County Life Magazine etc and as used by the Courtaulds.
Thank you so much for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens. When English Heritage took over in 1995, it was discovered that the house had been photographed by Country Life for a feature called 'Country Homes and Gardens, Old and New' and issued on 29th May 1937. It was these pictures that were used, including how the furniture would be laid out.

    Joust weekend
Attended the joust event. A very enjoyable day. Lots of living history displays, falconry and a joust. Well organised. Staff were friendly. Most of our time was spent at the special event. We did walk round th3 gardens which were enjoyable.
Thank you David for your FIVE STAR feedback on the Legendary Joust at Eltham Palace. Lots of hard work went in by all the team to make it happen so it's great to hear that you think we got it right.

Oasis of beauty, both natural and architectural
We were amazed by the vision of Stephen and Ginie Courtauld to design these beautiful gardens, renovate the great hall, and build such a modern 1930s home which is extremely well preserved by English Heritage. It was also very interesting to read about the history of the place. For anyone visiting Woolwich, this is an easy 20 minute bus ride away and not to be missed - the closest in terms of beauty and serenity to the gardens at Eltham would be Kew gardens themselves. Another positive was that the place was not too crowded, although we did go on a Thursday afternoon.
Thank you for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens, it is much appreciated. As you mention, we are very well served by public transport with two over ground stations (Eltham and Mottingham) just a short walk away.

    A mixed bag
I wish there were options to review staff and the venue. Firstly the venue. I've visited on numerous occasions and this time brought along a friend who had not visited before. Beautiful grounds. Very very quiet on our visit and we sat in the peaceful gardens admiring the views. The house is fascinating and the blend of Art Deco and Medieval works a treat. Now to the staff... Hats off to those in the house who were all very friendly and informative. Sadly not such a great experience elsewhere specifically towards the end of our visit at 3pm. The cafe... Two ladies behind the counter were more interested talking about their shifts, staffing levels and pay than engaging with us. We were served promptly but being privy to their working patterns and gripes about lack of breaks and their pay is not very professional . The shop.... I went to the till to purchase a few items. There were 3 staff members behind the till. One was clearly serving a small group of 4 and was busy wrapping/boxing up items they were buying. The other two were engaging in chitchat with each other, made no eye contact with us or acknowledged us in any other way. I put the items back and left. Quite a contrast between the staff (volunteers) in the house and staff (presumably salaried) in the cafe and shop. 4*for the house but sadly 2*for cafe/shop at the end of the day.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace, your feedback is much appreciated and very useful. We will share your observations with all the staff involved.

Thank you Hilary for your 5 STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace. You are right to come back to see the gardens as they are ever changing and can be particularly stunning in early May when the blossom is at it's best. I think perhaps your friends had English Heritage membership as we are not one of the properties in the care of the National Trust?

Not my first visit to this fabulous property but it was a first to be there for their Christmas Lights Trail and it was a magical experience. Reasonably priced, this event was beautifully laid out with places to stop for hot chocolate (or something stronger) along the route. The house itself was closed, so the trail was set exclusively around the beautiful gardens. And it was stunning, thoroughly recommended.

The whole event this year was a rip off tickets and refreshments had all gone up. I couldnt pay on line so bought my tickets at the palace £67 for one 4yr .one7yr andmyself a pensioner. Hot chocolate fThere was no marshmallow toasting most people like a toasted marshmallow The lights were no way as good as previous years no music in the trees and one of the events everybody loved no tunnel of lights. Although the route seemed to wind around more it was definately not worth it. I have spoken to several people since then and they have all said they wont be going next year, Sorry eltham palace but review your display.

Thank you Diane for taking the time to review your visit to the Christmas at Eltham Palace light show, we are sorry to hear it didn't meet your expectations. On some of the nights it was dangerous to light the fire pits as it was too windy so we were unable to offer marshmallow toasting on those nights. The display and route changes each year so we hope next time it will be more to your liking.

I visited the Eltham Palace light event before Christmas with my family and had a wonderful experience. Events like this usually sell hot chocolate but WOW this was delicious. The options were incredible, gingerbread, mint and even Baileys. I had a gingerbread hot chocolate and this was by far the best hot chocolate I have ever had. The queue for hot chocolates and marshmallows for the fire pit was long but the team worked incredibly hard to serve everyone very quickly. The team were also incredibly polite and friendly. Excellent visit, I will be back!

I went last year for the first time and only did so again because it was advertised as a different trail. Very sad that many individual light displays were lacking, and a lot were NOT different, eg the sparkly tree and chandeliers. Seen better, longer trails for less cost. I used my EH discount but was surprised to have 2 £1.50 admin fees. Had an email advising to dl my ticket as reception could be patchy, but I had a mobile ticket and couldn't work out how to dL it. Email sent asking for help was not responded to. Luckily, it was not needed. I knew there would be no entry at the Court Yard entrance but not that there would be "no access." I parked in Kingsground walking up the alley way but then found it fenced off and had a much longer trek than anticipated.

Thank you for taking the time to send a review of your visit to the Christmas at Eltham Palace lightshow. After feedback from Blue Badge holders last year, the trail was designed to start next to their parking area for ease of access. The exit back to the fairground and food outlets for the visitors was fenced off to discourage visitors entering the grounds that had not purchased a ticket. We're sorry this meant that you had to walk a little further than you anticipated.

A chilly Friday evening walk around the grounds of Eltham palace.

The light display was great, the kids loved the lights and also the fair ground.

One and only negative point I would bring up is there was no parking on the site or particularly close by.

Thank you for your review of the Christmas at Eltham light show and great to hear the kids loved it so much. Although we can usually offer hard standing parking for around 90 cars, we lose three quarters of this to the event. We then need to park the staff and the remaining spaces are reserved for Blue Badge holders. Eltham is well served by public transport but if you do need to drive there is street parking available and a multi storey car park next to Sainsbury's which is 5 minutes walk away. There is also a car park next to Eltham railway station which is about 12 minutes walk away or three stops on a 161 bus.

Thank you for taking the time to send your feedback, it's very useful when we plan our future events. Any profit made by English Heritage goes towards the conservation of over four hundred historic properties which can all be visited for free by our members. Membership for two adults and up to twelve children under 18 works out at £10 per calendar month before any discounts.

The event has been outsourced this year and as a result, ticket prices have more than doubled, the lights were of a much poorer quality, it was oversold and so incredibly busy with unmanageable queues throughout. We were sadly disappointed at the commercialisation of what is usually a beautiful local event and will definitely not be returning. We have attended each year since 2017 aside from 2020 when it did not run. An absolute disgrace.

Absolute rip off. I payed over £20 for an adult and £ 15 for a child access ticket ( carer went free ) for just a few lights. Person who struggles to walk got round it all in 25 mins with taking pictures!!
We saw a much better free display just up the road - ( 10 minutes drive away ) and we could park our car with the blue badge unlike at eltham palace!
Avoid at all cost not worth the money at all.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. English Heritage is a charity that cares for over four hundred properties and the income raised at all our events goes towards their conservation. There is Blue badge parking at Eltham Palace which can be booked when you buy your tickets.

We had tickets booked since August for the Christmas lights tour. We arrived last night to find the palace in darkness I rung the doorbell to be informed that Monday Tuesday Wednesday was cancelled we should have received an email Apparently some emails went into junk not in our case! Why not reimburse us then we would know it was cancelled!!!

Thank you for your feedback Margaret and sorry you've had a problem with your tickets. A few weeks ago, Kilimanjaro, the operator of the event, chose to cancel some of the dates that proved very unpopular for Christmas at Eltham as they felt that a low attendance would result in a lack of atmosphere. Ticket holders were automatically sent a link via email with the option to cancel your booking or to rebook another date. If you don't have the email, give the ticket agent a call Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm on 0115 807 7900. If you still wish to come along there are still some tickets available and remember, members of English Heritage receive a 33% discount on your tickets.
