    A mixed bag
I wish there were options to review staff and the venue. Firstly the venue. I've visited on numerous occasions and this time brought along a friend who had not visited before. Beautiful grounds. Very very quiet on our visit and we sat in the peaceful gardens admiring the views. The house is fascinating and the blend of Art Deco and Medieval works a treat. Now to the staff... Hats off to those in the house who were all very friendly and informative. Sadly not such a great experience elsewhere specifically towards the end of our visit at 3pm. The cafe... Two ladies behind the counter were more interested talking about their shifts, staffing levels and pay than engaging with us. We were served promptly but being privy to their working patterns and gripes about lack of breaks and their pay is not very professional . The shop.... I went to the till to purchase a few items. There were 3 staff members behind the till. One was clearly serving a small group of 4 and was busy wrapping/boxing up items they were buying. The other two were engaging in chitchat with each other, made no eye contact with us or acknowledged us in any other way. I put the items back and left. Quite a contrast between the staff (volunteers) in the house and staff (presumably salaried) in the cafe and shop. 4*for the house but sadly 2*for cafe/shop at the end of the day.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace, your feedback is much appreciated and very useful. We will share your observations with all the staff involved.

English Heritage Guides Make This Property More than Special
This palace is pure fun. The English Heritage volunteers in each area of the house are welcoming and have lots of fun facts and stories to share. The Medieval Hall (which has a great ceiling) has been used as a barn, had bombs dropped on it during WWII and been used for 1930's dance parties. The Art Deco rooms created by the Courtaulds have hidden rooms and secrets in addition to being quite beautiful. It is a great day out and only a short train from Waterloo East.
Thank you for taking the time to post this FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace, it's much appreciated and great to hear. We have a superb team of volunteers who are only too pleased to share their knowledge with our visitors.

    Excellent
This has been on our bucket list for a long time as we love Art Deco and what an excellent day it was. We obviously loved the palace and the gardens but found the audio guides with their extra stories, along with the stories from the volunteer guides made it extra special. It is a fascinating place with lots of history and one I wouldn't hesitate on visiting again.
Thank you so much for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens, a true Art Deco gem. We will pass on your kind words to our team, especially the volunteers.

    Great Halloween event
Our second visit to Eltham with grandchildren. This time for their Halloween entertainments. They do these events so well. The children were given a card to complete and we headed into the gardens to find all the clues. In the house were two actors that provided great entertainment for the children in a ghost hunt. We then had time for lunch in the café and headed back to the house. There were ghost stories, one for younger children and one for older ones. Finally, the children did a craft session and designed their own ghost. A brilliant day out. My wife and I still want to visit on our own so we can enjoy the house and gardens.
Thank you Peter for your FIVE STAR review, it is much appreciated. Lots of hard work is put in to our children's events so it's great to get such positive feedback.

    Fantastic half term day out
We visited for the first time during October half term and had a fantastic time. All the staff we encountered were lovely and very knowledgeable. A special mention to the two actors on the Halloween ghost hunt my kids aging from 5 to 10 absolutely loved it, it was the highlight of their trip and they are still talking about it and doing the jokes a week on! An amazing little gem of a place that we are looking forward to coming back to explore again.
Thank you for your fantastic FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace during Halloween half term. We all work tremendously hard to make these events a success so it's very encouraging to hear that you all enjoyed it so much.

Cream Tea and a wonderful autumn walk
We arrived at 1pm and decided to get a cream tea (with coffee!) and the staff couldn’t be more friendly. They were busy but this didn’t deter them at all. The scone had just come out of the kitchen and was warm- absolutely delicious! We enjoyed the walks around the grounds, inside the palace itself we were intrigued by the inset bathtubs! We wanted to see the basement but unfortunately it was flooded. We had a really lovely afternoon exploring, it will be nice to come back in summer for a picnic on the grounds. Thank you!
Thank you Holly for taking the time to post such a superb FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens. The catering team work really hard, especially at weekends, so it's great to hear they're doing a good job.

Christmas Lights display with the family.
A chilly Friday evening walk around the grounds of Eltham palace. The light display was great, the kids loved the lights and also the fair ground. One and only negative point I would bring up is there was no parking on the site or particularly close by.
Thank you for your review of the Christmas at Eltham light show and great to hear the kids loved it so much. Although we can usually offer hard standing parking for around 90 cars, we lose three quarters of this to the event. We then need to park the staff and the remaining spaces are reserved for Blue Badge holders. Eltham is well served by public transport but if you do need to drive there is street parking available and a multi storey car park next to Sainsbury's which is 5 minutes walk away. There is also a car park next to Eltham railway station which is about 12 minutes walk away or three stops on a 161 bus.

DELICIOUS hot chocolate and incredible staff!
I visited the Eltham Palace light event before Christmas with my family and had a wonderful experience. Events like this usually sell hot chocolate but WOW this was delicious. The options were incredible, gingerbread, mint and even Baileys. I had a gingerbread hot chocolate and this was by far the best hot chocolate I have ever had. The queue for hot chocolates and marshmallows for the fire pit was long but the team worked incredibly hard to serve everyone very quickly. The team were also incredibly polite and friendly. Excellent visit, I will be back!
Thank you for your 5 STAR review of your visit to our Christmas at Eltham Palace light show. All the team worked incredibly hard to make this event work. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

    Stunning experience
Not my first visit to this fabulous property but it was a first to be there for their Christmas Lights Trail and it was a magical experience. Reasonably priced, this event was beautifully laid out with places to stop for hot chocolate (or something stronger) along the route. The house itself was closed, so the trail was set exclusively around the beautiful gardens. And it was stunning, thoroughly recommended.
Thank you for your review of the Eltham Palace Christmas Light Trail, it sounds like you had a great time. Check the Events section on the English Heritage website to see what other events are coming up soon.

This is my fourth visit to Eltham Palace!this time we brought our friends,it was their first visit. We all got in for free,we have the art pass and our friends are National Trust members. The house is amazing, the audio guide was excellent. We will return again to see the gardens when it is a bit warmer!
Thank you Hilary for your 5 STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace. You are right to come back to see the gardens as they are ever changing and can be particularly stunning in early May when the blossom is at it's best. I think perhaps your friends had English Heritage membership as we are not one of the properties in the care of the National Trust?

I came here 11 years ago and this place was in pristine condition. But today it’s just very run down. Plus full of shouting kids and differing folks with dogs....in the house. The cafe was a joke......badly staffed and a line up that took 30 mins to get a very poor coffee. I won’t be back. Outside much better than inside!!!

Hi Rick, thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace. We are sorry to hear that your visit did not meet your expectations but if you choose to visit in January it will inevitably be not at it's cleanest due to the weather. You are right saying there was a dog in the house on Sunday, an assistance dog enabling a lady to visit with hearing loss. We positively encourage children to visit as they are the members of the future and whose income we rely on to open such properties to the public. Sundays can be very busy so please expect to wait to be served in the cafe.

Booked a ghost tour at Eltham Palace for 29th Oct at 7pm with 5 friends. Not sure what to expect but details said it would be outside. Arrived expecting a spooky walk around the grounds in the dark. Not so. Completely inside & consisted of 3 actors telling ghost stories whilst audience stood around watching. Lit by electric candlelight so not particularly dark & certainly not remotely spooky let alone scary. We were shuffled from room to room and could hear the repeat of the 1st actor with the new tour during the 2nd story which was irritating and added to the lack of atmosphere. No special effects whatsoever. No loud noises or cold air wafting through. Actors were clearly experienced but stories too long & in last case virtually incomprehensible & rambling as narrator supposed to be drunk which made him hard to understand. Very very disappointed and frankly not worth the £17.50 ticket price. Felt like something massively missing & almost as though it was a rehearsal for the main event - maybe it was! We came away thinking “was that it then” & frankly felt ripped off. I almost never leave reviews but this was just so disappointing. Have now read the reviews from last year & see some of the same comments were made about lack of special effects but clearly we’re not taken on board. This could have been so much better with just a little more thought. No idea why it was inside when weather clear with no rain forecast. Love Eltham Palace but this just felt like a money making scheme to lure people in out of hours!

Thank you for taking the time to review the ghost tours at Eltham Palace, we are sorry that they didn't live up to your expectations . They were inside as we had complaints last year that it was too cold outside and people were disappointed not to see the beautiful Art Deco interiors in the semi-darkness. Sound effects were used to add to the atmosphere although we cannot employ smoke machines inside such a delicate historic environment as they leave an oily deposit. The tours were very popular with all tickets sold and we had a group of people leave early as they considered the event too scary!

Felt jaded and worn. I felt a bit like that too after the visit. Winds meant the gardens were closed which was a shame as it is very expensive for a half hour visit round the house. Really not much to see and not very interesting stories about the not very interesting rich (coulthard?) owners who refurbished it in such gloomy style. Best bit is the walk to it with horses and donkeys to pet while looking out at the Shard which feels very close!

Went on one of the first ghost tours last night - great actors telling ghost stories during a short walk around the grounds, especially the maid. Good value. Would suggest the occasional shadowy figure appearing in a window or on a balcony at key points in the stories would have been the icing on the cake.

Just a shame that despite reminders, people still couldn't socially distance as they were so desperate to be at the front and couldn't leave 2 metres from the person in front when walking through the grounds, so we felt the need to put masks on even though outside.

We were very excited to visit the house and gardens, especially at the time of the Halloween "Spooktacular"! However, was very disappointed. Extra charge of £4 per child to carve a pumpkin and, although the website made out that there would be people dressed up and lots to do, we only saw 3 people dressed up and they were nothing to do with Halloween! A few stickers representing Halloween put on the windows at the cafes and that was it! A talk on burning witches which was very boring with people walking out. Sorry, but the house (and grounds) is beautiful, but we had 2 very disappointed/bored children to deal with. Total waste of time and to advertise this as a Halloween special week is totally misleading! Avoid.

Thank you Shelley for reviewing your visit to Eltham Palace. Just a reminder that, besides the pumpkin carving, all the other activities were at no extra charge and the £4 charge included the pumpkin, a carving kit and 30 minutes help from a member of staff. We did get lots of positive feedback but we do understand that we cannot please everyone. The statement below is from a review on 25th October. The activities put on for the school holiday looked well planned, exciting and got the children really looking at the rooms. They were obviously popular.

A 15 minute walk from Mottingham station, we found Eltham palace, converted in the 1930s into a family home where the Great Hall gives an indication of the rich artchitecture of the palace. It was nearly derelict when it was restored by the Courtauld family, to incorporate original medieval features into an otherwise ultra-modern 1930s design. Stephen and Virginia Courtauld travelled widely, and kept records of each voyage. The interiors are from Scandinavia, Venice, Egypt inspiration, reflecting the well travelled owners. They even kept a pet lemur which had a small home of its own. the audio tour was really good, to explain the various artworks, furniture and decoration.

We enjoyed a wonderful visit to Eltham. It is saturated in medieval and modern history. The authentic art -deco is spectacular and it is extremely easy to negotiate the interior of the building. The information boards provided are detailed and accessible. I would recommend watching the short film on the first floor before you tour the building as it provides a concise historical overview. The gardens are also a wonderful feature of this English Treasure.

Nowhere else can you visit a palace where Henry VIII grew up and Wolsey stayed, which is connected to a 20th century mansion with more than a hint of Gotham (yes I spelt that as intended) about it and with a stunning Art Deco interior that looks cunningly like a Blue Riband ocean liner?

Eltham is a truly unusual place and despite there being Covid restrictions our visit was informative and the staff genuinely pleased to see us and armed with entertaining snippets. The story of the Courtalds who owned it is fascinating and they committed a huge amount of funds to restoration of the hall and the new build, then left after a few years!

Well worth a visit.

TIP: If you follow GoogleMaps it will take you to the foot entrance not the car park which is around the other side. Use: SE9 5NP for the car park then its an easy walk.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace. As you rightly point out, the building is totally unique with it's mix of medievel, Tudor and 1930's glamour supplied by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. We will pass on your kind words to the team.

We have visited this palace on a number of occasions but this visit to "Enchanted Eltham" was a first and well worth the time and entrance fees. My granddaughter was particularly interested in the fairy villages dotted around the gardens. She was not too happy with the man "Talking tree" but was more impressed with the female one! We spent our time ambling amongst the many illuminated trees and grounds and even went round a second time to take more of the decorations in. Truly wonderful ,many thanks to English Heritage for putting on such a magnificent event.

Love Eltham Palace, shame about the Ghost Tour. Instructions said to wrap up warmly and bring a torch as the tour was outside. It turned out to be entirely inside, though, so everyone was sweltering in coats and hats, in enclosed spaces. The prospect of Covid turned out to be the most frightening thing about this tour. It was run by three actors who all told very long, made up stories that had nothing to do with Eltham Palace; one of them was set in Ireland. Being in the dark in the great hall was fantastic, but nothing spooky about this ghost tour, sadly. It’s noted as one of English Heritage’s most haunted buildings so surely there were much better stories to be told?

Thank you for taking the time to review the ghost tours at Eltham Palace, we are sorry that they didn't live up to your expectations . The long range weather forecast indicated a cold spell so the decision was made to stay inside, Feedback from the previous year was also taken into account. The light levels in the house were reduced to add to the atmosphere but it would be unsafe to be in total darkness. Perhaps more your style would be our Enchanted Eltham Christmas Lightshow that runs from the 9th to 30th December which is all outside. Booking can be made via the English Heritage website.
