I first saw Eltham Palace on one of George Clarke’s programmes, it fascinated me and I knew I wanted to visit it, it is a lovely place so peaceful and the gardens are lovely and from the gardens in the distance you can see the Shard and the “Walkie Talkie” building the train from Charing Cross to Eltham was very quick and just a 15 minute walk from the station. The weather on the day was beautiful couldn’t have been better! The staff were lovely even when my relative picked up a plate from the table and set the alarm off!! The talk we listened to was also very informative…
Thank you Ann for your great review. As you mentioned, we have a great view of the city from here which is about 8 miles as the crow flies and if you look carefully. you can see the dome of St Pauls.

    Art deco delight
Firstly the bad. No proper directions on leaving the train station( leave station go to main road and turn left, follow road till you see car park signposted.) Gripe over, the rest was excellent, friendly staff, delightful staff, lovely gardens, great kids area and wonderful house. Well worth the visit. English heritage members get in free, a bonus
Thank you for your review of your visit to Eltham Palace and sorry you lost your way. We are signposted from Eltham Station so take a left on the main road, cross over to the right at the traffic lights and walk down Court Yard to the moat bridge entrance. From Mottingham Station, turn left on the main road and keep walking (ignoring the 'Eltham Palace' signpost indicating a left turn) until you reach the car park on the left and walk to the Visitor Centre at the end of the road.

    Fascinating place
Really enjoyed the Palace and Gardens. Audio/visual guide was excellent and enhanced our visit - we listened to every recording. Although a lot of the furniture and decorations were not original, they were faithful reproductions as seen in old photographs/County Life Magazine etc and as used by the Courtaulds.
Thank you so much for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens. When English Heritage took over in 1995, it was discovered that the house had been photographed by Country Life for a feature called 'Country Homes and Gardens, Old and New' and issued on 29th May 1937. It was these pictures that were used, including how the furniture would be laid out.

    Joust weekend
Attended the joust event. A very enjoyable day. Lots of living history displays, falconry and a joust. Well organised. Staff were friendly. Most of our time was spent at the special event. We did walk round th3 gardens which were enjoyable.
Thank you David for your FIVE STAR feedback on the Legendary Joust at Eltham Palace. Lots of hard work went in by all the team to make it happen so it's great to hear that you think we got it right.

Oasis of beauty, both natural and architectural
We were amazed by the vision of Stephen and Ginie Courtauld to design these beautiful gardens, renovate the great hall, and build such a modern 1930s home which is extremely well preserved by English Heritage. It was also very interesting to read about the history of the place. For anyone visiting Woolwich, this is an easy 20 minute bus ride away and not to be missed - the closest in terms of beauty and serenity to the gardens at Eltham would be Kew gardens themselves. Another positive was that the place was not too crowded, although we did go on a Thursday afternoon.
Thank you for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens, it is much appreciated. As you mention, we are very well served by public transport with two over ground stations (Eltham and Mottingham) just a short walk away.

    A mixed bag
I wish there were options to review staff and the venue. Firstly the venue. I've visited on numerous occasions and this time brought along a friend who had not visited before. Beautiful grounds. Very very quiet on our visit and we sat in the peaceful gardens admiring the views. The house is fascinating and the blend of Art Deco and Medieval works a treat. Now to the staff... Hats off to those in the house who were all very friendly and informative. Sadly not such a great experience elsewhere specifically towards the end of our visit at 3pm. The cafe... Two ladies behind the counter were more interested talking about their shifts, staffing levels and pay than engaging with us. We were served promptly but being privy to their working patterns and gripes about lack of breaks and their pay is not very professional . The shop.... I went to the till to purchase a few items. There were 3 staff members behind the till. One was clearly serving a small group of 4 and was busy wrapping/boxing up items they were buying. The other two were engaging in chitchat with each other, made no eye contact with us or acknowledged us in any other way. I put the items back and left. Quite a contrast between the staff (volunteers) in the house and staff (presumably salaried) in the cafe and shop. 4*for the house but sadly 2*for cafe/shop at the end of the day.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace, your feedback is much appreciated and very useful. We will share your observations with all the staff involved.

English Heritage Guides Make This Property More than Special
This palace is pure fun. The English Heritage volunteers in each area of the house are welcoming and have lots of fun facts and stories to share. The Medieval Hall (which has a great ceiling) has been used as a barn, had bombs dropped on it during WWII and been used for 1930's dance parties. The Art Deco rooms created by the Courtaulds have hidden rooms and secrets in addition to being quite beautiful. It is a great day out and only a short train from Waterloo East.
Thank you for taking the time to post this FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace, it's much appreciated and great to hear. We have a superb team of volunteers who are only too pleased to share their knowledge with our visitors.

    Excellent
This has been on our bucket list for a long time as we love Art Deco and what an excellent day it was. We obviously loved the palace and the gardens but found the audio guides with their extra stories, along with the stories from the volunteer guides made it extra special. It is a fascinating place with lots of history and one I wouldn't hesitate on visiting again.
Thank you so much for your FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace and Gardens, a true Art Deco gem. We will pass on your kind words to our team, especially the volunteers.

    Great Halloween event
Our second visit to Eltham with grandchildren. This time for their Halloween entertainments. They do these events so well. The children were given a card to complete and we headed into the gardens to find all the clues. In the house were two actors that provided great entertainment for the children in a ghost hunt. We then had time for lunch in the café and headed back to the house. There were ghost stories, one for younger children and one for older ones. Finally, the children did a craft session and designed their own ghost. A brilliant day out. My wife and I still want to visit on our own so we can enjoy the house and gardens.
Thank you Peter for your FIVE STAR review, it is much appreciated. Lots of hard work is put in to our children's events so it's great to get such positive feedback.

    Fantastic half term day out
We visited for the first time during October half term and had a fantastic time. All the staff we encountered were lovely and very knowledgeable. A special mention to the two actors on the Halloween ghost hunt my kids aging from 5 to 10 absolutely loved it, it was the highlight of their trip and they are still talking about it and doing the jokes a week on! An amazing little gem of a place that we are looking forward to coming back to explore again.
Thank you for your fantastic FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace during Halloween half term. We all work tremendously hard to make these events a success so it's very encouraging to hear that you all enjoyed it so much.

A lovely experience with a friend who has visited a number of times in the past year.

The interior is exquisite in the architecture and attention to detail… amazing craftsmanship… the opulence of the era is stunningly beautiful.

The grounds are beautifully planted and all aspects are well tended and maintained. My only suggestion would be to put the names of the plants in the flowerbeds/ meadow areas too.

A lovely tearoom within an old greenhouse with seating both inside and outside. We could see a nice sturdy wooden climbing frame for children too. High chairs were available and it’s ideal for wheelchair users too.

The shop has a nice selection of items and fair prices.

It’s run by English Heritage and the entrance price for a senior (65 years + over) was £15. Well worth the money.

I’d definitely recommend it to friends and family and I intend to go back again soon.

I visited on the last day in April, the sun was out and the gardens were beautiful. Hardly anyone there, which enhanced the visit immeasurably as I was able to stroll about both outside and inside with minimal delays. The house is sensational, the 1930s interiors are fascinating and the Great Hall is marvellous. I was entranced by the interiors and so much was accessible, unlike a lot of other big houses or palaces I’ve visited in England. Probably helps that no one resides there…Anyway to add to the delights, the entrance fee was reduced by about £4 as I had come on public transport, as they are encouraging people to reduce the carbon footprint. The cafe was pretty much empty and I had a good cream tea and a bowl of parsnip soup, in a lovely sort of glasshouse area. The staff were all pleasant and welcoming and all in all, I’d encourage people to visit, as it is lovely.

I have been wanting to visit Eltham Palace for many years. As a history lover, I knew this was where Henry VIII spent his childhood and the remaining medieval hall is spectacular to see. The 1930's art deco mansion was also amazing. The grounds were beautiful as well. A great day trip just outside of London.

Visited Eltham palace yesterday. We were disappointed as there was no audio guides available, as on a previous visit, as they were all broken and will be replaced at some point. Also, the basement was not available and hasn't been for 2 months, due to water. As these are both ongoing issues, there should be a note on the website and also at the entrance.
Lovely garden and the palace interior was interesting to see but better with the audio guide.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Eltham Palace, your feedback is most helpful. For this season we are introducing a brand new improved multimedia guide which has been delivered but there has been a technical issue with the charging racks. This should be ready to go very soon but in the meantime, the volunteers have enjoyed sharing their knowledge with the visitors so feel welcome to ask. The basement is also being prepared to open after emergency conservation.

I will start by saying we love eltham palace and come regularly as we are EH members and live close by and the small additions and clean up of the play area is nice to see but and I know most people there are volunteers but I’d say, 80% of the people are rude. Every time we come it’s the same thing with staff. I had one woman in the house literally grab me because she wanted me to put my bag on my front. I was literally in the process of doing it!
We will return. We love the house and the gardens are beautiful, especially on a good weather day but the staff do irk me!

Dear Leanne, Thank you for your feedback and nice to hear you think Eltham Palace is a great place. The house volunteers are asked to carry out a number of tasks which includes requesting visitors wear rucksacks to the front or carry them as a bag to protect the wall veneers. If they have been overzealous on this occasion we can only apologise.

Visited the palace Christmas light show called Enchanted Eltham. It was not bad value for money for the tickets although there was no entry to the palace itself. The grounds were lovingly decorated and it was worth the visit. The stalls there are a bit pricey but you expect to have to pay high prices for the location. I have been in the palace previously and recommend a visit. There are some areas starting to get a bit dilapidated but on the whole it is a great place. There is a nice cafe on site and the shop is very presentable too.

Eltham Palace and Gardens offers a unique and varied experience: stunning 1930s Art Deco mansion, magnificent Medieval hall, and lovely gardens. The gift and garden shops and cafe are delightful. The staff (largely volunteer) are wonderful. I had problems with the audio guide, and a volunteer quickly and very graciously resolved the issue.

One downside to my visit was that signage from the train station is very confusing. I had to ask a local for directions.

For those coming by train: you might want to consider a side trip to The Tarn. This lovely garden and bird sanctuary is on the way to Palace.

Thank you for the FIVE STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace, It's much appreciated and great to hear. The volunteers look after you once you are inside the house. Here are a few tips to help navigating from the local railway stations: Mottingham: Turn left outside the station and stay on this pavement and walk for around 10 minutes until you reach the car park, ignoring a pedestrian sign directing you left as this is a 'scenic route'. The Visitor Centre is at the bottom of this car park where you can buy a ticket, show your membership card or join English Heritage to enter for free. Eltham: Turn left on the main road and walk up the hill to Eltham High Street. Cross the road forward and right at the lights and walk down Court Yard to the gates and moat bridge at the Palace. It is sign posted from this station and is a similar distance. Both of these stations are only 25-30 minutes from central London.

Thank you Hilary for your 5 STAR review of your visit to Eltham Palace. You are right to come back to see the gardens as they are ever changing and can be particularly stunning in early May when the blossom is at it's best. I think perhaps your friends had English Heritage membership as we are not one of the properties in the care of the National Trust?
