Top ways to experience Menier Chocolate Factory and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
How to get there

Beautifully intimate little theatre, very quirky with a lovely bar area. I went with a local group to see Habeas Corpus which was brilliantly performed, very slick and the characters were well portrayed. An excellent production.
I loved the rake on the seating which gave a very good view, especially as I’m not very tall but I have deducted a star as the seating was rather squashed and uncomfortable. I visited in February so everyone had big coats and as their cloakroom was closed it meant people had their coats with them which added to the problem. Fortunately this wasn’t a long performance as I don’t think I could have sat there for any longer.

The 1950's musical "The Boyfriend" was our sole reason for going. Not heard of this theatre before....quirky, comfortable, intimate...will go again and maybe sample the restaurant too! Performance was of a very high standard...from acting to dancing, scenery, lighting all that one would expect from a London production but without the prices!

THE BOYFRIEND (book ,music and lyrics by Sandy Wilson) is Alive and Kicking in a Sparkling new production at The Intimate and Wonderful Menier Chocolate Factory. Amara Okereke is sweet and ideal as Polly Browne. Janie Dee brings sophistication and style to Madame Dubonnet. Gabrielle Lewis-Dodson is charming as Masie (I lost my heart to her!) and Robert Portal is a perfect Percival Browne. The Highlights were: "Won't You Charleston with Me" First Rate Dancing by Lewis-Dodson and Jack Butterwort (Bobby). "A Room in Bloomsbury" nicely Sung and Danced by Okereke and Dylan Mason (Tony) and "Poor Little Pierrette" A little gem for Dee and Okereke. The Entire cast did a fine job . Choreograher Bill Deamer did an Excellent job with all the Dances.

We went to see "The Boyfriend" today. I went into the theatre thinking that hmmmn I was not going to enjoy it. But. I have to say that the production was truly enchanting, the acting, singing and dancing was absolutely first class and west end standard.

I had tickets for Twiggy musical "Close up" on Saturday 11/11. I had a bad cold and my wife had got back from New York that day after visiting her dying dad in hospice after cutting trip short as it was our 26th year anniversary.

We went to dinner spending over £60. Went to Menier chocolate factory 30 mins before show started be told it was canx as three members of the cast were sick. They said they were phoning people. We did not get a call. (I would be interested to see if the matinee went on as if it didn't they had loads of time to call everyone.)

They emailed two days later and said tickets would be refunded.
We replied and asked for tickets for another day and they said no, all booked out.  No remorse over making a special trip for our anniversary or my wife's father. We got a reply saying thanks for accepting refund (which we didn’t) and money would be in my account in 7-10 days. Obviously didn't read our email properly.

My wife has worked in the theatre and knows you can get House seats.

This has been handled atrociously and l will never go back to the Chocolate factory. It was one of our favourite places.

This theatre puts on some smashing shows (we saw Jerry's Girls last night). However, the seating is probably the worst in any theatre in London (and we've been to most).

Even worse, it's always been bad, lots of people complain but they do nothing. It's like they don't care.

You'll see lots of reviews with people talking about the seating but they never respond. It's infuriating.

They're long, old uncomfortable benches with no separation or arm rests. They have 2 or 3 to many people on each row so you're all squeezed in. And of course you only need a few larger people on your row and things get even worse.

There's no excuse for it. I just think management of Menier just don't care. I appreciate they have reconfigurable sets so sometimes seating is flipped round but that's what happens all over London in fringe theatres and I have never been to one as bad as the Menier. And Menier has had the same awful seats for years.

They ignore email complains, they don't address the issue on review platforms, they don't reply to social media criticisms about seating.

One day they might start to treat the people who keep this venue afloat with a bit more respect but until then, I'd avoid the Menier unless you are happy with uncomfortable squashed bench seating.

It’s bench seating and the numbering on the seating tries to squash you in. the night I went wasn’t sold out, I spoke to an usher and got moved to the back row and had a whole bunch to myself. It’s a good view from there because it’s a very very small venue with steeply raked seating.

Today I had the Meal Deal for the matinee of Bridge over Madison County. This was a superb production in this intimate theatre. I recommend everyone attend this unique theatre. Unfortunately today was the last day of this show. This theatre never disappoints.

Unfortunately on this visit the cafe was
a disappointment. My server chose to ignore me. No follow up re desert and coffee no bill with sweets. Nothing, despite serving couples on either side of me and two girls two tables away. I stood up because I didn’t want to be late for the
Theatre, still no acknowledgement so I went to the desk and asked for the bill with the two pounds service charge in my hand. I fumed during the first act so decided to be proactive at interval and went to cafe and asked for sweets which I wasn’t given to have with the coffee I ordered. I felt better after that so forgot about it during the second act. I am writing this review because I’d like the server to understand they are selling an experience which can be
Memorable or not! That two pounds service charge probably meant more to me than her because my two credit cards are currently frozen due to over zealous security.

Maybe I’ll just go to the theatre which is
Wonderful in future.

This is one of the loveliest theatre you’ll ever get to go to. It’s small, often hosting pre west end plays, intimate and with a flair all of its own. It has a small restaurant alongside it, so even if you just grab a coffee and have a look round. Ideally book a performance to go and see
