We came to this place highly recommended and we were a bit disappointed. I mean, we were expecting to be 'wowed' with flavours and presentation, but the products are almost main stream (in flavour combination and the somewhat regular 'look'). We bought a bit of everything, from bars to bark, truffles, ice cream, and brownies. The chocolate was just ok, sorry. The marzipan bar was too thick with chocolate and less marzipan. The dry fig 'fudge' bar was too sweet. The individual pieces on the table were appealing, but the caramel was to runny and the other had a thick chocolate shelf. Overall, the prices are too hight for what you get.

During my visit there were over 20 different chocolate varieties on offer. Lots of dark options, with additions ranging from lighter flavors such as fruits, through spices such as ginger, and ending in cognac, bourbon and whiskey. There are milk chocolate choices, too.
The biggest problem with Paul's is in choosing from all the options!
In addition to the individual pieces, there are bars of various sizes, some are Paul's brands, others are fair trade items from around the world.
Paul's has options for all kinds of travel gifts. The packaging is first rate and beautiful.

Expensive but the chocolates are definitely worth it. The salted caramels chocolates are award winning and you can taste why.

The chocolates are fine. The displays are lovely. The staff... that’s another story.
They had awful attitude. No enthusiasm to help. Miserable. Unwelcoming and wanting you out of the door ASAP.
You’d think the day before valentines , one of their busiest of the year, they would embrace it and welcome it and act out joyous and helpful. Alas, the exact opposite.
Anyway, back to Godivas or Montezumas.

I went to the shop after seeing the very affable Paul A Young on the TV, I was intrigued and I fancied splashing out on some artisan chocolate, something different from the usual stuff I have on a daily basis.
Unfortunately I wish I hadn't bothered, I've never encountered such rude staff, I was gobsmacked. I wish I'd said something at the time but it took a while to sink in. When spending that amount of money on tiny portions of chocolate I like to ask questions about what it is I'm about to buy but the response was surly, disinterested, impatient and downright offensive. You'd expect the staff to have a deep knowledge and love for all things chocolate but I got the impression they couldn't care less and just wanted all the pesky customers out so they could carry on with their little group chat which I so rudely interrupted.
I'm sure the chocolate is great, I did buy some but I'm not in the mood to eat it right now as I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the little Basil Fawlty that served me. It's amazing how much something like this can ruin your day.

We came in on a Sunday afternoon of 23/07/17 to hopefully quickly buy some chocolates but that never happened. There were two male assistants - one older and one younger. None of them acknowledged us when we came in and didn't seem concerned about the queue beginning to pile up in front of the till or the enquiring eyes becoming tired by the sheer lack of inclination by either of the staff to speed up or settle the situation by even a word. The atmosphere was pressing and everyone could feel it - including them but they were clearly avoiding all the eyes. The younger one just slowly picked out chocolates for his current customer like he had all the time in the world and it was like the other one was reciting a speech about all his vast knowledge on chocolate to an international customer but it was really to the whole shop. I think he was indulging in his knowledge of every kind of chocolate - it was irrelevant to her simple question about one product and inappropriate when other customers clearly needed help. We were waiting awkwardly for what seemed like ages and I then just went to pick some items myself and queued. The older guy saw the queue but just continued to talk a lot of rubbish to this poor customer - it was seriously very odd and like a comedy sketch. The customer he'd been talking at left without buying anything anyway so he had prioritised the wrong customer and left a shop full of people who wanted to spend not being attended to. Loss of business. He then asked if anyone needed any assistance, ignored the huge queue of people then preceded to start "assisting" a gentleman hovering around the truffles section who had come in ten minutes after all the other customers!! It was as if he was distracting himself by his chocolate speeches so he didn't have to serve anyone but making it appear like he was working. He ignored the queue of people and didn't want to go to the till.
We gave up in the end as these guys are way too slow for central London and have no sense of urgency. This will affect business sales and the sad thing was that the friend that we had to leave to meet, didn't get to taste the delicious chocolate we'd planned as a gift. And we were late for our friend because we were waiting with nothing in the end. The chocolate is great, the shop looks stunning but is let down by the slow service.
We gave up in the end as these guys are way too slow for central London and have no sense of urgency. This will affect business sales and the sad thing was that the friend that we had to leave to meet, didn't get to taste the delicious chocolate we'd planned as a gift. Well, Paul A Young is a legend. This is an unarguably fact. The passion, expertise and love put into its portfolio is magnificent.
With this being said, I'll go ahead beefing about it.
The chocolate does not taste good at all. They have stuff comparable to a chocolate praline filled with mustard. This is just unsavoury. Marmite in brownie - come on: is that necessary?! Brownies alas aren't good (although award winning). Heavy, which is good, but not moist enough. Way to bitter and price and size are at a bad ratio. This is true for nearly everything available there. Pralines are very!!! small and £2 each. I spend round £20 tasting around just to find out that besides the peanutbutter and jam milk chocolate praline nothing tastes yummy. But, what pbj combo doesn't take good?! No master stroke then.
I made up my mine. Feel free to make up yours!
Btw staff takes it highly personal when you do not like the chocolates and does not offer any compensation whatsoever when you try 6 pralines for £12 and don't like any of them - au contraire - staff gets verbally abusive!

My daughters and I visited here in August having read great things about this fabulous chocolate creator online. Well, it wasn’t anything like I expected. We paid £26 for 1 brownie (£3.95), a hot chocolate (5.95) and 9 chocolates. Sample before you buy!
The brownie was nothing special, same as I’ve tasted in restaurants, the hot chocolate was literally like drinking undiluted melted chocolate and it had an oily film to it. The chocolates were average, unusual flavours like marmite (no thanks), but not a brilliant choice especially considering if you have a nut allergy and have to omit choosing these to start with!
They had chocolate buttons which in all honestly tasted very similar to Cadbury’s. To be honest it was a bit of a swizz! Like one other reviewer I did feel like the shop assistant thought that you were there to buy half the shop! Little bit of hard sell going on, but I’m glad we only got a sample (one of each chocolate). They tasted the same as Fortnum and Masons chocolates and they have a much larger choice! Won’t be returning!

Visited on a recent trip to London staff extremely helpful and have great understanding of all things chocolate able to talk us through the different types of chocolate they have time to spend with customers giving them full attention until they have chosen products for purchase. Staff are also very friendly enjoying conversations with all customers

This guy knows what he is doing with chocolate. My wife and I were on a vacation to London and made sure that one day we made it by his Soho store for a couple of his great brownies. We were repeat customers on this trip, and we will be back the next time too.

What are typical prices? Is there a box of 12 assorted available or something similar? I'm looking to purchase a small gift for a friend while in London.

They do a range of sizes, from 2 to 25 I think. I'd guess their most popular sizes are 9 chocolates (£15.50) or 4 chocolates (£7.00). You can choose your selection, and its worth asking staff to help, as they really know their chocolate!
