Have just been on the Gluten Free Baking course. I learnt so much about using different ingredients and a variety of techniques. Cakes were amazing, especially the pineapple upside down cupcakes using coconut oil. Highly recommend this course. Friendly and great fun. Will definitely look at other courses.

Thank you so much for your glowing review. We have created a database of wonderful gluten recipes over the past few years so glad that you benefit from some of these. Enjoy making them again at home.

My husband and I had a great experience learning the basics of sausage-making with John. The class was small, but we made five kinds of international sausages with freshly ground spices, four proteins, and other ingredients. Students did the grinding, mixing, and stuffing into fresh casings; John did the final sausage cooking and served them up with proper mashed potatoes and onion gravy.
The venue was scrupulously clean, and health and safety measures for both food prep and covid were carefully followed. I would highly recommend this as a unique holiday experience for visitors or a fun learning activity for friends.

Great day cooking Spanish classics with the lovely Carolina. Class size was small and intimate so you had a lot of 1–1 teaching time. I had to rearrange a class last minute due to illness and the school was very understanding and accommodating. I’ve already booked onto the next class :)

What a disappointment! All we did was make a short crust pastry, rolled it out and put it over some pre-cooked meat and chicken (which could not be taken home as it was not portable) and a Cornish pasty. There were 4 staff but we got very little attention to how we made the pastry. We only watched sweet crust pasty and puff pastry being made. For a 3 hour course (£130) it is very poor value for money and really a waste of time.

Thank you for your review. We take all criticism seriously so have looked at what you have said as this has been one of our more popular classes for many years. I have also spoken to staff concerned. We are very clear on our site that the puff pastry and pate sucre are demonstrated. We believe that we are the only cookery school that lists everything that is learnt in every class. We pride ourselves on our transparency. Most importantly is that those attending the class learn to make a really wonderful, light and buttery short pastry. If you are able to replicate that, I would be very happy. All classes have a set running order and this was adhered to. Everyone makes a Cornish pasty or two to take home. You were shown how to make a perfect pie filling before it was chilled for everyone int the class to use. You used the remaining short crust pastry to learn how to cover a pie in a bowl - chicken and mushroom and beef and ale - which is always eaten at Cookery School accompanied by an organic local brew. As a pate sucre is far more forgiving and easier to do than a regular short crust pastry, this is demonstrated and the pie filled with apple that is baked and eaten at the end of the class too. We have had requests over the years for people to understand how puff pastry is made so that is demonstrated quickly so that students can understand how it rises and learn to use it too to top a pot pie. I believe that at this class there was a request to use pastry on the top and bottom of the pie so that the teacher showed how this is done. This class is only three hours long so we are limited in what can be taught and we focus on the most important ingredient ie good pastry. We do not like our customers to feel disappointed and do our best to fulfil what we promise to deliver. We will happily provide you with a voucher to attend another class of choice to learn another new skill. Please contact us and we can arrange this.

I’ve just did a All Day Vegan course in The Cookery School. It was a pleasure to learn about some vegan dishes. All info was easy to understand, tasks in the groups were fun and the tasting at the end was so delicious!! I definitely recommend this course or similar courses to anyone who would like to gain some knowledge about plant-based meals. So far this my the most favourite cookery school. Thank you so much!!

Universe class cooking experience. I escorted 25 executives to the school and in moments they were cooking and having a remarkable fun time. Maddie quickly brought everyone in, made them feel at home with non-alcoholic elderflower cordials. She did an overview of the evening, offered some sound safety advice, and quickly moved everyone to their stations. Done in two phases, the first phase was preparing side dishes and searing the lamb. With great tutoring and oversight from Jeff, our 25 chefs made quick work of potatoes, veggies, steak and profiteroles. From there is was time for a competition of pasta making. John gave us an excellent class in making tortellini and then the teams were off - each team quickly came together, creating, cutting, filling and folding pasta - all very quickly. And then it was time for dinner. The staff transformed the work area into a dining room and a formal sit down dinner for 25 people. The food was excellent, the company terrific and the experience unforgettable. We were doing a lot in London, but this was clearly a highlight. And even though one team earned the aprons as the winner of the pasta competition, everyone left a winner having experience The Cookery. Many thanks to John, Maddy and Jeff, with all their staff, for a wonderful kitchen team cooking experience.

Great care taken to ensure high health and safety standards. John was our instructor for the Ultimate Fish & Shellfish course. Patiently explained and guided us through the dishes. Definitely feel confident to try some of the recipes at home. Vaida was also amazing in clearing the vast quantity of dirty utensils and dishes we got through.

Thank you for your review. John and Vaida are fantastic. This class sets out to demystify cooking of fish and shellfish so we are glad that you feel more confident about the subject and enjoyed the class.

100% recommend Cookery School. Worth every minute and pound to travel across from Wales for the 4 day Intermediary course. Ghalid, Linda & John were fab teachers, very approachable. I am so much more confident with filleting fish and boning a chicken.
I will return!!!

I attended a cookery school day course on shellfish. I was surprised how small the venue was, but with seven people attending (suitably distanced) everything went very well.
The chef in charge for the event (John) was absolutely first class. He was engaging and approachable which out everyone at their ease immediately.
The day began with a savoury scone and coffee, and we soon moved into learning best practise for preparation of various fish and shellfish.
Emphasis on buying fish and their sustainability was most helpful and interesting.
The list of dishes for the day was quite daunting, but my group managed to get through them all within the expected time.
Being objective, perhaps there were too many dishes for a six-hour event!
However, as has been mentioned by other reviewers - do not eat anything prior to attending this course, as you have the chance to eat all of the dishes that have been prepared. This is the one of the challenging tasks of the day, albeit most delicious and enjoyable.
I am considering another course as a result of my experience! Try it...you might enjoy it too.

Thank you for your review. We are very careful about sourcing of our fish and most of it comes iff day boats around Plymouth. We try to teach as much as we can in this session on preparing and cooking fish as many feel daunted by it until it is made easy for them. look forward to seeing you at Cookeru School again.

What a great day! I can recommend this course unreservedly. It was terrific fun but we learnt many real skills. I was impressed at the amount of hands on practice- we each filleted a fish, prepared a scallop, prepared a calamari , prepared prawns ,cleaned some moules and at least saw how to prepare a lobster.Chef John managed the class brilliantly, we all had a fair chance of cooking and between us prepared many , many dishes using a range of techniques. Then we had a lovely ( huge!) meal.

Sally Louise, thank you for another wonderful review of our fish and shellfish day. Great that you felt that the skills you learnt were so worthwhile. John is a wonderful teacher and makes the numerous techniques so accessible. So pleased that despite hard work, it was fun and that you managed to taste it all - guess that by your comment on the size of the meal.

Hi is there a popular hotel or other establishment that your students stay at during your courses please or does the cost include accommodation?
Written 8 April 2022
Hi, we have a few hotels in short walking distance, however, as we are so central some of our past guests have chosen to stay out of central London and travel in.
If you have any further questions please feel free to email us.

Would the 3 hour baking class be suitable as a gift for a 70yr old husband who loves eating cakes but has never made one?
Written 15 November 2020
Hi Mac, yes we would be delighted for your husband to join one of our cake classes.
If he requires any assistance while in the class one of our staff would be more than happy to help. We also have chairs on the side if he requires a break, which a few of our past guests similar to his age have done in the past.
Please do send me an email if you have any further questions.

Is this a place where you would be comfortable to attend alone if you are really interested in learning? Or is it more of a group or date-type social activity?

Me too, I went on my own BUT wished that I had paid for my husband to go too as he would have enjoyed!

How much actual cooking is done by participants? Does everyone get to actually cook, (as opposed to prepare, by chopping etc) ?
Do we get to take home the dishes that we make?
Written 24 February 2019
I did the sausage making course and there were plenty of cooking time or in this case assembling, so yes you completed from scratch. However they said we couldn't bring home and had to eat it on the premises which was disappointing. Something about health and safety but they could have offered a disclaimer if they were so worried! Hope this helps. Its a good value for money cookery school.

Hi Galina, We have two kitchens so depending on which kitchen a class is taking place in, there will be up to 12 or up to 16 people in a class. We have a ratio of 1 chef per 10 students generally. Regards, Jo
