About Ghostsigns Walking Tours
Whispers of advertising past are the focus of these walking tours through Stoke Newington (North London) and Bankside (South London), taking in some of London's best ghostsigns (painted signs, fading on walls). These are used to explore local, craft and advertising history through their unique stories and survival against the odds. Described as 'fascinating' by Londonist, the tour will inspire you to start spotting ghostsigns everywhere you go with an appreciation of their history and place in contemporary urban streetscapes. The tour is led by ghostsigns expert and local resident, Sam Roberts, curator of the History of Advertising Trust Ghostsigns Archive and author of numerous articles and book contributions on the topic.

We did this in lockdown and it was the perfect activity. Provided some purpose to our usual walk and it was a really interesting insight in to someone else's passion/side project. We did a self guided walk via the app and it was really good and Stoke Newington is a great area for food so we had some good take away snack/lunch spots along the way too. We have both been joking about how we spent the rest of the day looking up for signs. Looking forward to doing the bermondsey one.

I was unable to take the ghostsign tour last time I was in London, so I was delighted to see that it was offered virtually in April, during the global pandemic. Sam is a world-renowned expert on ghostsigns, those hand-painted advertisements that were commonly slathered on buildings in the 19th and 20th centuries (now fading--hence the reference to ghosts). Throughout the tour, Sam points out the many ghostsigns along the route and provides interesting context. Windows to a different age, these old advertisements are often overlooked, but once you start noticing them, you'll look at your surroundings in new ways.

This was very interesting, I live in the area and always wondered about all the signs, now I know more about them and why they are there. Very well researched, a lot of work has gone behind this. Although it was strange to be doing a tour of Stoke Newington whilst we were inside our house in Stoke Newington on a sunny day, this is the reality of lockdown so it was very nice to go out in a virtual way, it was also nice to see people from Argentina taking part. As I say there was a lot of research in this and I enjoyed a lot.

Sam's virtual tour of ghostsigns in Southwark was a wonderful treat during covid lockdown. Using photos and Street View maps, he took us on a "walk" through these streets full of industrial history and told us so much about the adverts of time gone by. Sam's research is thorough and he knows his stuff. A delightful way to visit London from my home in the US.

The delight in finding that you aren’t the only one who loves these fading traces of the past adorning our buildings and that others appreciate them too! Very enjoyable and informative
