Top ways to experience Thames River
The area
Neighbourhood: Southbank
Big time attractions such as the London Eye and a thriving theatre scene (compliments of the National Theatre and the Young Vic) are but a few of the reasons that Southbank is such a collectively cherished part of town. With plenty of family friendly activities and venues lined up along a pedestrianized river bank between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge, visitors can always expect a casual and festive atmosphere. On top of all the fun stuff to do at Southbank is the opportunity to simply sit back and admire photo-op views of iconic landmarks like Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral, just on across the Thames.

The water isn't overly clean and litter in there which collects in places especially along the sides. It is nice to get pictures with some of the famous buildings and London scenery. There are boat tours along here and also boat taxi's which are good.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 January 2024
- KavehBournemouth, United Kingdom554 contributionsThe Thames River: London's Timeless HeartbeatMy visit to London was highlighted by the mesmerizing Thames River. Walking along the Thames Path, I marveled at the iconic Tower Bridge and Tower of London. A river cruise provided unique views of historic sites like the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben. Comfortable shoes are essential for exploring the extensive paths, and a riverboat pass offers flexible sightseeing. The Thames is more than a river; it’s the lifeblood of London, blending rich history with vibrant culture, making any visit unforgettable.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 July 2024

Would not recommend .my first time having this experience , I was shown to table and that was it. No conversation from staff it was like a conveyor belt had to ask to be served a drink after everyone else had been served and were getting there food, then food put in front of me which was awful I asked for a plain chicken it was like rubber only taste was the herbs my husband is a retired chef and he ate some of it but wasnt impressed..wasn't allowed hot drink until dessert one cup of tea or coffee, the dessert which was not touched by myself as it wasn't something I ate but was told no other alternative.
Then paid for our drinks by cash at the end didn't get change back £3.15 then they expect you to give a tip when you leaving they all stand by the door going o thank you hope you enjoyed yourselves enjoy rest of your day thankyou...
Looked at other lunch cruises online later that night found exactly the same menu so it's mass produced of site and then kept warm before service..

There is a good variety of River Cruises of offer with fast boat experiences for the more adventurous and guided cruises are also available. We had visited London on a City Break and spent a lot of time wandering up and down the banks of the River Thames. There is plenty to do and see along both banks of the River in both directions. Or you can merely sit and relax in one of the riverside cafes and watch the boats varying in size from large cruise ships to small boats meandering along the river at differing speeds. Whatever your choice of viewing the River would be an enjoyable experience.

We boarded the Thames Clipper RB1 from Westminster to the Tower at night.
It was so beautiful to see the night view of Big Ben, the London Eye, London Bridge and the Tower of London.
The boarding area at Westminster station is at the far end, platform E.
The timetable can be found at Weekend Westbound Timetable - Uber Boat by Thames Clippers.
Simply touch your MasterCard to get on board without buying a ticket. This contactless payment was very convenient in London, and I was also able to take touch payments on city buses, tubes and GW Express.
I think it's a lot cheaper than taking a sightseeing boat. If you ride various things, you may have a fixed daily limit.

The Thames is an iconic part of London. One cannot visit London and not see the Thames. Many of the top tourist attractions are located on or near the Thames (London eye, Big Ben, London Bridge, London tower).
We did a 2 hour river cruise down the Thames. You can find tickets down by the Thames at one of the cruise providers. We paid about £17 per person for the cruise. Doing a river cruise down the Thames gives you the opportunity to view London from different angles and also at different parts of the day/night.
We also enjoyed having a walk down by the river and soaking up the sights of London.

The River Thames is the main River flowing through the city of London. It flows from humble beginnings many miles away and as it gets wider becomes a source for tourism where in the past it was used for trading.
Besides the River there are many paths to allow you to walk / cycle / run. It is a great place to enjoy scenery.
Ultimately as it gets closer to the North Sea the river is much wider and the Port of Tilbury which still has huge container ships arriving to deliver cargo and also export it.
It's worth visiting Southend on Sea and visit the world's longest pier which will take you into the Thames estuary.
Wherever you go besides the River Thames there is something to see.

The Shard, the London Eye, Shakespeare's theater and all the amazing bridges, this tour was an excellent introduction to the many buildings and structures that line the Thames, each with their unique history and story. The best part about it was our fabulous tour guide Rosie who was not only knowledgeable but incredibly funny and entertaining. She is made for the job. It was a bit cold and windy being out on the water but as long as you come prepared it's no problem.

Crossing the south of England, from west to east, the River Thames empties into the North Sea after a tortuous journey of some 346 km (watershed of 12,935 km2). It rises at the foot of the Cotswold Hills in Gloucestershire and passes through the beautiful cities of Oxford and London along its route (average monthly flow of 138 m3/sec in January and 33 m3/sec in august). The effect of the North Sea (tide and salinity) is felt up to 90 km inland. The Thames is fed by 38 tributaries. There are more than 80 islands and numerous bridges and footbridges. Walking along the Thames or taking a cruise ship over its tranquil waters were among the activities we enjoyed most during our stay in London in April 2023.

We did a boat tour. We got on the Westminster Pier and went by a very comfortable boat all the way to Greenwhich. The boat was amazing - there were very comfy seats and tables and you could buy food on board or bring your own food and drinks. The ride is also very smooth and the guide tells you where to look out of the window.
On the way back though, from Greenwhich, we got on another boat, and there the seats were sooo uncomfortable, we couldn't sit at all! Luckily they were more benches than seats, so we at least could lie down. We got off the Tower Pier, I think, but all in all - very nice experience and gets you from point A to B (and C). :)

I have booked the river cruise. Is it inside or outside seating on the boat?
Written 25 September 2018
The boat has inside and a few seats outside. It's used for commuters so goes slightly quicker than the other tourist board but don't be put off by this. It's has just as many stops and being able to get on and off is great. Enjoy

Are there tour packages covering part of Thames other than the Greenwich to Westminster.

Yes there are tours which focus on the Tower of London....and the bridges that cross the Thames

How to reach thames from Brick Lane? What is the best way to do a tour / cruise? Will we get vegetarian food?
Written 7 May 2017
Priya. From Brick Lane you're about 800 metres/yards north of the Thames. The best way to get there walking is down brick lane (against traffic), and when it ends turn right on Whitechapel and then take the third left (Mansell St.). Just follow this road (straight across the rotunda) and you'll end up on Tower Bridge, probably the most famous bridge in London.
If you want to catch a river cruise, turn right as soon as you get to the river. About 100 metres you'll find a loading pier for the tour (as well as a ticket booth).
As to veggie food you'll probably be able to get that just about any food shop in London. About 100 metres before the river you'll find many places to eat (on your left going towards the river).
Enjoy and please ask again if you have any doubts.

( siamo in 2) , è meglio comprare i biglietti online o farli in loco?
Written 14 January 2017

Hi. I would like to enquire about boat trips departing from Richmond on Saturday 11th June. A afternoon short to medium would be great.
Thanking you in advance.
