The place that was Charles Dickens' local when he lived down the road at 48 Doughty Street, where he wrote the immortal "Oliver Twist" between 1837 and 1839. There are three usable tables outside and a small outside yard at the back. It's a classic Victorian boozer, pretty much in its original state, with the button-back leather benches, etched glass "snob screens" over the bar and a small "snug" that would hold your maximum of six. People were complaining about slow service on the food and two pints cost a breathtaking £11+, but it's worth stopping in to drink in the atmosphere.

Hi there. Thanks so much for this lovely review. Clearly you're someone who loves their Victorian culture so very glad we were able to capture some of that spirit. Due to Covid guidelines the food doesn't come out quite as quickly as it used to but rest assured it's still made with the same amazing care and quality Hope to see you again soon! Pete

Walked past this pub by accident and was looking to have Sunday Lunch. We was not disappointed, we ordered our lunch and was greeted by a lovely lady called Aura. She made us feel very welcome and was very attentive.

Terrific old boozer with lots of its Victorian original decor & fittings (including the frosted glass “posh screens” so the clientele didn’t have to see the bar staff) really popular with Dickens, Ted Hughes etc (though not at the same time) sells Young’s beers, too !

Worlds slowest service. Literally still at the bar waiting. They have three staff each doing one order at a time and taking their sweet ass time doing it. Spent £160 on an open tab and can't get a round for my life

Hi, Ryan! Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your experience with us. I am so disappointed to hear, the guys were not fast enough behind the bar. I will look in to who was working and make sure to change the habits behind the bar. Thank you again for your review. Every feedback matters to us. Kind regards, Aura

We lucked out with this one. Bartender was so friendly and helpful. She explained the difference between cask ale and tap ale, in detail. Feels like a real neighborhood pub. I think we were the only tourists. Patrons also were friendly. Food was good. I would just advise to also check the smaller menus on the table as it seems they had food options that weren't listed on the larger laminated menus?
