- Ellie7 contributionsGreat performance, better crowd control by staff needed. We went to see The Nutcracker for my birthday, sat in the upper circle. The performance was amazing, and the theatre itself is beautiful with a lovely feel to it. Unfortunately, we had a woman and her child in front of us who refused to sit properly in their seats (e.g. sitting on very front edge of their seat, hoisting themselves out of their seat by leaning on the arm rests, and leaning very far forwards). This blocked mine and my boyfriend’s view of the stage, and also blocked the view of two ladies sat behind us. We politely asked the woman to sit properly and she refused, so we spoke to the theatre staff, who refused to help or intervene other than splitting us up and giving us separate seats. I find this quite surprising given how militant the policing of people on their phones is (and rightly so). A man also shouted very loudly at a girl sat in front of him in the middle of the show, which caused a large disturbance, but again there was no intervention from the staff who just stood and watched on. I found it quite odd! I would come again, but next time I’d just pay more to sit at the front of the upper circle so that you don’t run the risk of being exposed to rude and selfish members of the public. It’s a shame to have to do so though, because the staff should intervene if people are causing such disturbances.Visited January 2023Written 4 January 2023
- AndyCostiganWarrington, United Kingdom108 contributionsHome to the English National OperaThe Coliseum is home to the ENO and we thoroughly enjoyed our first visit there to see Carmen. Much bigger than I expected it to be, the auditorium is ornately decorated and the seating was comfortable for the show. One minor gripe, and I guess maybe due to the building being over a hundred years old, there was a disappointing draught in the lower stalls that felt like someone had left a door open. It didn't spoil the evening but, was noticeable. Would I go again, yes, for sure - the show was excellent and the building well worth a look around.Visited February 2023Written 24 February 2023
- BrianthelionBirmingham, United Kingdom2,427 contributionsGreat building, strange show.Loved my first visit here in what seems a large auditorium. Staff welcome as good as it gets and whilst I like opera, Akhenaten just didn’t do it for me. Fabulous staging and music but boy is it slow. Luckily the third act is the best but you have to suffer to reach that part!Visited April 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 April 2023

I have seen it 3x before, but wanted to see it again. It has been updated and Be Elton is great as POP. The Coliseum theatre is just gorgeous. The interior has amazing architecture and lighting and it was so fortunate to be able to see a show there.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2023
- SMC31 contributionsBen Elton amazing !Visited to see We Will Rock You. Great venue and amazing show. Ben Elton made the show and we laughed all the way through. I think you need to have seen Ben Elton on Friday Night Live to fully appreciate all the humour. We saw the original show and this updated version was even better. Great cast created a fab atmosphere- would go back and see it again tomorrow if we could,Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 June 2023

- HINA WIslamabad, Pakistan6,566 contributionsSize Does Matter! You can find the largest theatre of London in the famous St. Martin’s Lane. It was built in 1904. It was the first theatre to be electrified. It was initially a venue for the variety shows, which even included chariot races. The concept behind this theatre was that entertainment should be made accessible to the general public. It became the home of the National Opera in 1968 and continues to carry on this tradition. Several changes were made for this. An area was created for the large orchestra and the theatre was given the widest proscenium arch of West End to enhance the impact of the operatic performances.Visited August 2022Travelled with familyWritten 7 July 2023

Had to stand up top for second act. We Will Rock You is also pretty terrible, even with the great music of Queen to work with. Nice looking though!Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 July 2023
- iSooz78 contributionsExcellent venue, brilliant showSuperb venue, had everything we needed - good access (lift) great seats with excellent view. We Will Rock You was an amazing show, superb cast and musicians. Ben Elton was hilarious (you are still "the man" Ben as I told you at Upstart Crow...) and totally irreverent. Obvious that both the audience and the cast were having a great time, I can recommend everyone to see this show before it closes. It is an updated version of the original so worth another visit.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2023

Attended the opera at the London Coliseum on a rainy Saturday evening. The staff have the attendance and leaving processes well worked out. No queueing with easy access to our seat. It is worth researching your seat ahead of booking in some detail. we were unable to see half of the surtitles, but the staff did allow us to move at no extra cost. Spectacular design and a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

This is an Iconic Theatre is London, home to the English National Opera (ENO).
The building is rather impressive and ornate, as you would expect.
We recently saw The Magic of Disney here....
It is an old building so no air-conditioning so can be a little uncomfortable, even the Conductor of the orchestra seemed to be struggling with the heat...and this is in Winter!
As with a lot of old theatres in London the seats are old, small and a tad uncomfortable.

I was treated horribly. I go to the theatre in London regularly. I travel from Doncaster and stay over a few days and go to Whipsnade and London Zoo over the course of my trip and see a few shows. I had spent the day at London Zoo, and had my camera with me. I have a £1,000 camera, and it was in my backpack, with no intention of being brought out in the theatre. I actually went to 2 shows the next day and they had no issues with me having a camera in my bag. They told me I couldn’t take my camera in, despite me stating it would not be taken out of my bag. They said I had to either not go in, or hand my camera over to them. There was nothing on the website when I booked about camera’s having to be handed in. In order to see the show I had to let them confiscate it but they would not give me a receipt! They said I had to take a photo however they held their hands up to my phone to prevent me taking a photo which could identify them, yet I was expected to hand over an expensive piece of kit with no proof. They could have compromised and taken the battery pack out of the camera for me to collect later, and left the camera in my care. I am diabetic and suffer high blood pressure. I have suffered from stress and anxiety over the last few months and recently had some time off sick due to this. I have a partial amputation of my foot and they made no effort to seat me while discussing this and during later complaints. I became I’ll over the course of the evening. I repeatedly had threats from the security officer who had been rude earlier on. Nobody bothered to check on me during the interval despite the fact that I had said I was feeling unwell. I made a further complaint at this point, and when escorted back to my seat I lost my balance due to a combination of issues with my diabetes and my foot and almost went headfirst down the stairs. I asked for the manager to bring my camera after the show and stated I did not want to see this security officer again because he had been so rude throughout the evening. The manager was dismissive, even when I showed her the state of my foot with the amputation. Eventually she asked if I wanted a paramedic as I’d said I was not well and I was concerned about getting back out of the city after the events of the evening. I said that I did and she brought out the security officer who was not a paramedic, he was a first aider and was not qualified to deal with my health issues. I had him leaning over me in a threatening manner and I said I wanted them to move him away from me and did not want him anywhere near me. I ended up having to call for an ambulance and check into A&E on my way from the theater as I was feeling extremely unwell, and I am still suffering from the effects of the experience several days later. I was not able to enjoy the show, and the treatment at the hands of staff at the Coliseum could have led to my death. When I told them they had a duty of care to their visitors they were dismissive. I have visited most theatres in London and I have never been treated so poorly. I have had bad experiences with this theatre before though. They were unhelpful last year when I had a booking which coincided with one of the train strikes. A few years ago I had a drink in my bag and they were difficult on the door with me about that. I told them I was diabetic and need to have some food and drink with me in case I have an issue with my blood sugars and they were still difficult and I had to get a manager on that occasion and show him my medical card at which point the security men on the doors had to let me by. I will never go to London Coliseum again. They treat guests badly and do not care about their well-being. I think they should be ashamed of themselves however they still have not written back to me over the complaint I made.

Booked my tickets online in the Upper Circle, arrived went to sit down and thats when I found I couldn't sit down the seat was so narrow. I am a size 20. Not sure if the seats are all the same size. I had to go down to the box office to see if they could help the first person said we can't help you because you booked with a 3rd party agent. I said you have to be kidding me what am I supposed to do was almost in tears as it was a treat for my best friends birthday. It was embaressing then someone else said we can sort it out they actually moved us to a box with no extra cost I did offer. So can't fault the theatre just wanted to make people aware so they don't have the same problem

Acoustic very poor, unable to clearly hear spoken words by actors. Have seen this musical 8 years ago which was amazing, unfortunately this time not as good. Although the singers could sing it was almost like screeching, made my ears bleed!, I did not feel entertained and left the theatre very very disappointed. Would not recommend, although thankfully production is ending in August.

Went here with the family, had balcony seats, we watched "We will rock you" , firstly the show was one of the greats, great story and performance throughout, cant fault it.
As for the theatre i feel its time for a review, the seats were cramped and uncomfortable, Hardly no room to readjust.
Staff were anal and unfair Too tedeaous. Even higher status staff were rude, blunt and fake at the end of the show. Justvwanted people out.
Shame as the actual show was brilliant and cant find fault, well done to Ben Elton the entire crew.

The usher crew ruined it from the moment I walked through the doors. We've all had those experiences when we enter a place and for some reason, an overly-proprietary staff treats you like an offender. You smile graciously and try to stay positive so it doesn't ruin your experience. I arrived with a smile and a ticket, looking forward to an entertaining show. Was met with the usher team that makes you think you've committed an offense by buying a ticket and coming to 'their' theatre. The usher team honestly seemed to be angling for an encounter. When finally seated, not in the seat I purchased, the balcony seats were awful, straight back, almost forward-pushing, with no leg room (I'm 5-3, 120lbs). This reception ruined the experience for me. I could not enjoy the show and left after just a few songs. I do not recommend this place at all. They need new management and a culture overhaul.

We had tickets in the Back row of the Balcony for Chess ( K48 & K49). Had a reasonsable view of stage. However, did loose front of stage where it had been extended out over orchestra pit. However. A lady kindly gave us seats in Upper Circle Centre. So cant say exact view from balcony for performance as moved. But screens on stage and the fact that front of stage rises at times helps. View from Row H Centre Upper Circle. Was good. Did loose a little view right at front of stage but was either covered by screens or was area that raised so could see. Either way it didnot effect our enjoyment of the show.

20 members of a community choir went to see Chess last night, the show was excellent. BEWARE though = my friend bought a small g& t and a small wine and was charged £17.50, upstairs I bought the same drinks for the interval and was charged £11.50. 5 other members of our group had 5 small glasses of wine and was charged £40. What is going on here? Is it a scam to con the tourists? Where is this extra money going?
LeonardoDiCatrio
Oxford, UK38 contributions
These prices are excessive. I'm not sure it is a con unless the price lists show the published price to be different or the staff lied to you, but it does demonstrate the excessive costs of drinks in theatres and it is unfair. Had you bought both of your drink orders downstairs, you would have paid significantly more for your drinks than we paid for the two tickets for both my wife and I to see the performance. As with Enfield Peter, we tend to have a drink before we go. The timings of evening West End shows tend to be such that a nice meal with a bottle of wine can often be fitted in and costs about the same for a couple as two pairs of drinks at the theatre. The total cost for both of us to see Chess, have a pasta meal, bottle of wine and dessert at Bella Italia came in at just under £100, which is as it should be for a night out.

Booking for Chess ...is Row B centre stalls too close ?....Thanks

Nyron
London, United Kingdom
Yes this is much too close For stalls you ideally need to be at least 5 rows back From rows closer than this your view wiill be restricted despite the rake in the stage floor and you will be uncomfortable looking up for an hour or more
