Eating out should be a pleasurable experience as much as being a good meal. As the first time out since lockdown I was not sure how relaxing eating out would be. The Duke staff did a splendid job to unobtrusively enable guests to be comfortable and relaxed and to clearly show the efforts being made to keep staff and guests safe. My meal was a simple one, but well prepared and served with a nice pint of pale ale. All in all a most enjoyable evening in a very pleasant garden setting.

It was refreshing to find a pub in Chicwick where the Management & Staff interacted with us. Both Abdul & Charlie were really friendly and inviting. It was my wife's 60th & they made her feel very special. Not only will we be back, we will also recommend to others as the food was also great.

On a hot July afternoon, my wife and I decided to head to the cooling gardens of The Duke of Sussex for afternoon snack. The menu is very seafood heavy and a strong Spanish influence. No scotch eggs or sausage rolls here I’m afraid. Decided to go for a pick me up of an Affogato and Churros. When still in the EU, why not? What came out I can only express the same disappoint I have as the EU referendum result. The Affogato for £4.50 was just an espresso and a dollop of vanilla ice cream, no liquor to be seen. The churros were as pale as an Englishman’s first day on holiday in Costa Brava. They were crisp but there was nothing else to them, no spongy middle, no chewy, bready delight. The chocolate sauce that came with it was equally flat. A combination of a dark powered drinking chocolate like Green and Black’s, left runny with a dollop of thick cream. Not the melted dark chocolate with heavy cream left to set so when a golden churro is dipped in, it coats and delights. Also a miss was the lack of cinnamon. The churros at £6.50 is a major disappointment. I’m glad I didn’t try any of the other items on the menu. I would have probably found the chef spent half a season in Spain and just got a gist of what the countries cuisine has to offer. Very disappointed the basics couldn’t even be executed well.

The pub is really nice and has a friendly atmosphere. The food was generally good although I had the vegetarian paella that did not resemble a paella at all it was more a bowl of bland rice with vegetables which was a shame. Everyone else’s food was really good though and we had some chips to share which were so good! I would go back here although I wouldn’t order the paella again.
