Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Friendly staff in a small pub with lovely, old furnishings. Ideal for a few drinks as it's close to Fenchurch Street Station. We only popped in for a couple but we were having such a good time, we stayed longer.

If you like a good old ale pub and don’t mind being cosy with the local city types then this one is recommended. Known for closing relatively early in the week compared to other pubs and bars in the area but if you like your ale and seek old period London pubs with the appropriate decor then this is worth popping into. In the summer people spill outside. Inside it is pretty much standing or leaning room only. There is a small area to sit if you are lucky. Good place for a pint of Spitfire. Smallish bar but staff are very attentive.

Old looking building on Fenchurch Street. Good bar but otherwise bland. Plenty of choices in the area.

Efficient service. Good choice of well kept Shepherd Neame beer. Small. Standing room only when I visited early evening. Bags of character.

After receiving the incorrect order of beers I politely asked them to change one of the pints to which the staff laughed and sarcastically denied making the wrong drinks.
They wouldn't change a pint, how pathetic. Considering we had spent a fair amount of money in the pub across the hour or so we were in there, I felt it was the least they could do. But they refused and handled the situation terribly.

Traditional Kentish beers and well kept. One of the older pubs, not big, but clean, well kept, and good beer will always beat silly themes. Long may it remain so

Just the place for a relaxing pint after work. I make a point of going one or twice a month. Service is quick even when busy and I have never had a bad pint.
Shuts very early - 8.30pm. I can only guess this is a licence thing because it cannot make commercial sense, particularly in summer.

This pub is a quaint city pub with oodles of character and history. The staff are friendly and the beer is good. BUT although the staff are friendly, they appear to be ruled with an iron fist. I went to this pub during a cold day recently, I was with friends, some of which wanted a smoke and beer together. I asked if they could turn the heaters on and the response was "they don't get turned on until later in the day". I asked if they could press the button now as it's freezing. The bar man said he'd ask. The person who was asked gave the answer as no, not until the inside bar area was full. At 1400 I re-entered a very busy bar and asked again. The bar man said no, so I asked how full the bar needed to be, he said fuller than this.
Not sure exactly how many sardines need to be packed into this very small pub to warrant putting a heater on outside, but the ruling seems a little odd to me.
So if your thinking about frequenting this quaint pub for a beer in winter, either take a thick coat or lots of friends with you.
Keep your customers happy and they will come back time and time again, is it really that expensive to turn 1 heater on outside?
Alternatively go to the ship in Talbot place, better beer, friendlier staff, larger pub (slightly) but most importantly a few switched on heaters.
I hope you find this review useful.
Stay warm.
