The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

This statue is in the perfect location considering what it represents - it looks great with Parliament and Big Ben behind it.

PROS
* Imposing prominent impressive statue
* Most important location on Parliament Square, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament Building
* A very popular congregating and meeting spot for groups of tourists (see my "helpful" photos)

CONS
Not a single word of explanation or praise or honor or history is written there- just his name- his last name

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as the first and most prominent and significant statue when I explored Parliament Square. I looked at it from all the multiple angles and took a number of "helpful" photos.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It's free

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Yes for sure- the next time that I visit

ADVICE
Be sure to come and see the statue and honor the famous significant British politician

Say what you want about Churchill. He was a deeply flawed man. But he was also the right combination of pig-headed stubbornness, moral clarity, and courage to lead his nation during the greatest crisis in British (and European) history. In the seemingly-hopeless months of 1940, his words rallied a people to hold the line against ultimate evil. All that is good and happy about modern Europe (the “broad, sunlit uplands” he described in his “Finest Hour” speech) is largely due to him.

Take a moment to admire his statue.

There are dozens of dozens of statues in London. However, this is one I really wanted to see. It also has a great location next to the Parliament Building and Big Ben, perfect for pictures. An ardent anglofile, Churchill had a checkered political career in his prime. However, late in life he served multiple terms as Prime Minister as a the defender of the free world first from Hitler and Germany and then Stalin and the Soviet Union. I also reminded our tour guide he was half American.

Not the most flattering of images but this statue, one of several located on Parliament Square, seems to be represent the former Prime Minister at his pugnacious best. Worth just a few minutes to reflect on, grab a photo and move on for most visitors.

A fine memorial for a great leader. Sir Winston Churchill's influence on the course of history was enormous. Located in Parliament Square, it is an easy stopping point between Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey

The right leader when the world needed him most, he met his moment in history with great energy and vision to preserve the freedoms that underlie our hope for progress on every front. Judge him for the path he kept open, not the stumbles along the way.
