About
The West End’s most celebrated show is now winner of the 2015 Olivier Award for BEST NEW MUSICAL. SUNNY AFTERNOON also won Oliviers for Best Actor (John Dagliesh), Best Supporting Actor (George Maguire), and Outstanding Achievement in Music (Ray Davies). With Music and Lyrics by Ray Davies, a new Book by Joe Penhall and Direction by Edward Hall, SUNNY AFTERNOON depicts the rise to stardom of THE KINKS. Set against the back-drop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain’s most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations. THE KINKS exploded onto the 60’s music scene with a raw, energetic new sound that rocked a nation. But how did that happen, where exactly did they come from and what happened next? This ‘Great British Musical’ (The Times) features many of the band’s hits, including: YOU REALLY GOT ME, WATERLOO SUNSET, DEDICATED FOLLOWER OF FASHION, ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT, LOLA, SUNNY AFTERNOON and many more.

Address
Neighbourhood: Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.

Tried to be too clever, by fitting songs in with storyline and when songs sung it was too short and then on with the story. I personally, along with my friends were expecting to hear more than a few bars.

Very impressed by the combination of acting, singing , dancing and sheer musicality
A great set, very well written, we were carried along from beginning to end
Not forgetting the two hard working musicians at the back of the stage...

Fantastic show at Norwich Theatre Royal tonight . Fully deserved standing ovation . A really innovative musical highlighting the marvellous music of the Kinks and the ups and downs of a sixties pop group . We both thoroughly enjoyed it with superb portrayals of the Davies brothers .

Fabulous show, saw for first time at Harrold Pinter Theatre London about 18 months ago and when we saw it was coming to our local Theatre Royal Norwich booked straight away. First show was great this was brilliant all the cast gave it everything, all the hits blasted out while telling the story of the up's and down's of the group. Everyone on their feet singing dancing clapping at the end. Ryan O'Donnell as Ray Davis was excellent both in portraying the character and with his vocals. If it comes your way don't miss out. BOOK!

I saw this musical in Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre during its tour. Although I was (unfortunately) not born early enough to see The Kinks in their heyday, I am a huge fan of their music and was very excited about seeing Sunny Afternoon - it did not disappoint.

The cast were excellent and the show is extremely energetic with lots of singing, dancing, comedy and acting to tell the band's story. There are many references to events during the 60s and the clothing and hairstyles of the cast make you feel as if you have stepped back in time. Some songs are extremely loud but The Kinks were a rock band so this should not be surprising. The very, very loud parts are infrequent and most of the songs are played at a normal volume for musical theatre. There is some swearing as others have mentioned, but it is all in the context of the play.

The lead actors did a brilliant job and all played live instruments. I didn't want it to end and the final few songs of the show are particularly fun, as the whole audience were encouraged to stand up and dance/sing along. If you are a fan of The Kinks or have any interest in British rock music from the 1960s/70s, I would definitely recommend seeing this musical.

For those of us that were a product of the 60's the music still lives on. It was a brilliant performance with laced with a strong dose of humour. It reminded me of how the boys never really changed they were always the boys from Muswell hill. They were proud to be British and their songs reflected this.
