So if you are new to the UK the pub culture may be something different to you. A genuine pub is where local people go to connect and have fun and talk to new people and just genuinely have a good time! Sometimes this may spill over into a party and the language may not be suitable for children but most pubs will tell you in advance. If you really want to see a traditional proper London pub go to the Dolphin! I love it!!!

Just a hop, skip and a jump from the mayhem of Kings Cross station is this unexpected Irish bar - and it's an Irish bar in the sense that it's an Irishman running it, not that it's full of shamrocks and other plastic nonsense. This is a proper, hidden London pub, for when you despair of all the phoney establishments around this busy part of town. The Thai food is good too - a little Thai lady comes in each day to cook a modest, but wholesome, menu. There's a pool table during the day, although it gets covered over at night to become an extra table. High bar stools fringe the public bar, lower seats and sofas ring the saloon, and the gents loo is down a precipitous flight of steps into the cellar. It's all a bit tatty round the edges, but authentic.

What's so great about this pub is that it's two minutes from King's Cross/St Pancras and the BL, yet you can nearly always get a seat. It's tucked away in a little side street, and (fortunately) most people don't realise it's there! In summer there are lots of pavement tables, though I usually use the lounge bar. The staff are great: the landlord (with his almost impenetrable Irish brogue!), his son and the regular barmaid -- and they remember you. The beer's fine; Pride or Doom Bar or whatever are much the same wherever you are, and it's not overpriced compared to many places in central London. The Thai food is excellent for the price; it's a limited menu, but that's fine, because what they have, they do well. And it's quiet enough to talk, which is what you want in a pub, rather than being deafened by music. All of this makes it a great little pub for an evening out with friends, or on a date. My only criticism is that whoever designed their website included an avatar who starts talking the moment the page opens. Please, please get rid of it! 😃

Wandering around the kings cross area to kill the night. Found this pub on our travels and called in for a couple pints. Got chatting to what seemed like locals of the place, all great people. Bloke behind the bar was an absolute legend. Was outside having a smoke and we asked if there was time for pint before close, he said what do you want and went back inside to put our drinks. Cool wee pool table and outside area. Definitely worth popping in for a drink

We stayed one night in the area before catching a train to Luton airport. The Dolphin was recommended to us because of its location and good Thai food. We checked their website which said food is available till 22.30, cooked by a Thai chef. We tried to order food just before 21.00, only to be told that food was no longer available, and the Thai chef, who was in his late 70s apparently, had gone back to Thailand. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. The pub seemed nice and relaxed but did not deliver what was promised.
