The museum at 12 Cable Street is a museum dedicated to the history of the East London in the 1880's, providing a serious examination of the crimes of Jack the Ripper within the social context of the period. For the first time it tells the story of the man known as 'Jack the Ripper' from the perspective of six of the women who were his victims.

Whether you're here for its dynamic street life, world class galleries or famed curry houses, you're bound to be wowed by the uniquely cosmopolitan flavor of Whitechapel. Long gone are the days when Jack the Ripper stalked its streets. And despite his mysterious legacy bringing throngs of curiosity driven tour groups to its back alleys and otherwise serene garden squares, these days you're more likely to catch a cutting edge fashionista scurrying through its age old lanes than criminals of any sort.

Having read about Jack the Ripper, we went to this museum to add to my knowledge where it actually happened. What a disappointment! The museum uses creepy mannequins and poorly staged rooms to represent some of the history. They have very little actual Jack the Ripper items and depend on repeated newspaper stories as wallpaper to tell the story. It's dark and hard to read the exhibit information, and more often than not, the information on the wall isn't even associated with the topic. We had to take a $20 train ride, walk for another 15 minutes and pay almost $40 to visit this museum, which felt like a complete waste of time and money. Their maps of the crimes did not even indicate where you were in relation, so who knows if the museum was even in the area where the events happened.

The lady on reception was lovely, very friendly and very helpful.
The museum is not big but it is very well done. There is a lot to see and there is a lot about the Police who tried to catch the Ripper as well as a good amount of information about his victims.
We booked the Ripper Walking Tour at the same time as the entry tickets which makes it cheaper. The walking tour was about an hour and a half long and Sam the guide was great, telling us a lot of other historical facts too. Very worth doing both the Museum and the Walk.

It is a very small museum but very interesting and well thought out never the less.
It is maximum an hour to do this museum so the admission price is about right

I took my 10 year old to the museum during half term. We were welcomed with a warm reception by a friendly and knowledgeable lady, who my daughter enjoyed sharing what she had learnt with at the end. It's a small museum in a victorian building, spanning 5 floors altogether each with one room to visit, full of information and posters, clips of newspapers, mannequins dressed up, sound recordings playing in the background. There are some gruesome facts about the murders on the walls, as you can imagine, so may need to consider if your child is ok with that or not, if they can read. One of the rooms is darker and a bit scarier than the others, because there is the sound of a lady screaming playing but I only mention it as my daughter has anxiety and this was the only room that she felt worried in, in case anyone else has similar concerns about taking children. It wasn't particularly frightening, although some of the facts are obviously disturbing. The final room is at the end on the ground floor and there are pictures of the actual women taken by the police at the mortuary. There is a warning on the door advising children do not view these. I checked myself and decided to leave it up to my daughter to decide if she wanted to view them, but asked my friend to cover up a couple of the pictures that were more horrifically wounded. The others looked like they were sleeping. Again there are some facts about the murders near the pictures that are disturbing that you feel may not be appropriate for younger children to see. Ultimately found it really sad that we are still having the same conversations about doing more to protect women from danger and being attacked at night in 2022 as they were in 1888!! And having those conversations with my daughter I felt were really important, so it felt like a really educational visit in more than one way. Whole museum took us less than 1 hr to view. Would recommend it for something interesting to do if you find yourself near Cable St in London ever.

Although a small museum, very informative and interesting in each room. Was easy to find. If we had time we would have done the tour as well.
