- heike0rangeNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom151 contributionsOrmesby Hall visitCalled in to this NT property to break up our journey after getting great feedback from friends who had visited recently. Lovely homely venue with lots of local history and great atmosphere about it & the guides were informative when asked. Nice little cafe & second hand book shop & we were glad we called in … you should give it a try to!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- VikingDB83 contributionsOh yes it is! (Excellent)What a lovely exhibition/display of pantomime - each room unique with different approach to each panto featured. A lot of thought and hard work must have gone into this presentation so hats off to all staff & Volunteers involved. This was an unexpected way to cheer up a bitterly cold and icy day. Well done.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 December 2023
- Freezer49Romford, United Kingdom153 contributionsA lovely find. This National Trust property is a lovely Georgian Mansion full of wonderful rooms and interesting information on the family who lived here. - nmaidwell123Middlesbrough, United Kingdom487 contributionsBeautiful hall and gardensWe attended over Easter with our young grand daughter and the activities were great. From games to egg hunts the event was very well organised. The hall is beautiful and very well maintained. It was especially stunning when decorated for Christmas. The gardens are beautiful and the staff are always friendly and helpful.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 May 2024
- Ruthadie09Newton Aycliffe, United Kingdom88 contributionsA lovely houseFirst trip to this place, never knew it existed. It's only fairly small, but still spend 3-4 hours here, the house is really good, they had a musical event and pond dipping on for the kids during the holiday. So the joy of a tranquil trip was stopped by children smashing saucepans with wooden spoons. But all part of the fun. They oddly have a really good miniature railway in the house, the staff were more than friendly and were happy to talk about the house. The gardens are lovely, lots of seats in the cafe and outdoor space for sitting/picnics etc. car park is all hard packed gravel, plenty of disabled spots, but didn't see electric parking. Looking forward to the car event in June!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- MythSaltburn-by-the-Sea, United Kingdom80 contributionsA wonderful tripVisited today with my partner and had an absolutely wonderful time. All of the staff were lovely and told us lots about the history of the house, explaining photographs and family trees. A special thank you to the gentleman on the second floor who showed my very curious partner where the chamberpots were hidden! The two gentlemen working the model railway were full of interesting information, and clearly put a lot of care and pride into the trains. We had coffee and cake in the tearoom — the coffee cake was delicious and the staff very friendly. The lady in the second hand bookshop was lovely too, and we picked up a couple of books at amazing donation prices. My partner is from Scotland and it was his first time visiting; I felt extremely proud to show him such a well cared for and friendly National Trust home. Thank you!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 June 2024

Spent 4 hours mooching in the house , kids enjoyed playing in the gardens with lots of play activities set up for over the summer. Lots of activities to do if you had children with you. A vist to the cafe did not disappoint the scone was delicious but a thumbs down for the plastic cups although reusable it was a disappointment. Very knowledgeable volunteers on hand to guide you from room to room. Thank you Janet for adding a touch of living history. - Charlotte B71 contributionsBeautiful houseWe came for the free-day and it was SUPER busy but the staff did a great job of fitting everyone in. There were loads of cool activities like archery and sports, and falconry and owl shows. The interior of the house is gorgeous and so expensive but the entire site is so nice and I would definitely recommend it.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 August 2024

I visited Ormesby Hall with my daughter and grandsons on 30th December. As usual the volunteers were helpful and the children enjoyed the trails in the garden and the house. It was unfortunate, therefore, that our visit was marred by a number of issues. We approached the house via the main entrance. There was nothing to warn us that access to the car park would be via a muddy, pot holed track where our car ground out on several occasions! Unless the trust wishes to be sued for damages they need to do something about this as a matter of urgency.
We visited the tea room where one poor young man was doing his best to cope with the lunch time rush on his own. The food for the adults was good but the children’s sandwiches were awful - a tiny amount of cheese on dry white bread. We would have set them back if we hadn’t felt sorry for the staff member. Finally on leaving the tea room we spotted a tiny notice advising us not to touch the radiator as it was very hot. This was positively dangerous as children could touch it with ease and the notice was so small that we hadn’t seen it on the way in. Why was the radiator not either screened off to prevent a child touching it or turned off?
So come on Ormesby Hall. - get your act together. You have a beautiful building and grounds, fascinating model railways, lovely volunteers and a large population nearby (including myself) who would visit more if the facilities were brought up to normal National Trust standards.

We visited with three grandchildren aged 10, 3 and 1 and there was plenty to interest them all. The Hall had a fairytale panto theme with awe inspiring costumes, etc. The dressing up area with a stage appealed to all of them. A great idea. The 10 year old was disappointed the train rooms were closed but was pleased when he was told there was a special Christmas train in a downstairs room. It was very impressive and the volunteers running it told us all about it and how the buildings were made. Well worth a visit.

Interesting, attractive and well-maintained building. You did get a sense that people had actually lived there. There were with informative guides on hand and worthwhile exhibitions on display. The wildlife photography exhibition in particular was stunning and memorable.
The gardens were similarly colourful and well-maintained, and there were good car parking and cafe facilities.

The Hall & it's rooms are decorated nicely for Christmas & the staff are very friendly.
The childrens christmas show in the marquee is very poor. It lasted for 25 minutes & consisted of 3 people in costume talking & trying to create what should resemble a pantomime. No microphones, no music, no lights, no stage, no props, infact the poorest show I've seen & at a cost of £12 per child it was overpriced & truelly disappointing.

On our way back home from 2 nights in Saltburn, my wife and I decided to use our NT cards and visit this place. So glad that we did. It is an absolute gem of a place. Fabulous gardens, incredible personal stories, enthusiastic and knowledgable guides and a model railway too. The last inhabitant was Ruth Pennyman and her story alone is worth the entry fee. A stunning house that, unlike so many NT properties, has retained the feel of a family home. Quite magical.

This is a nice informal house that was lived in until most recent. Staff are very informative and friendly. As it has only just opened there is a lot to do inside cafe not open takeaway only parts of the house was not open but most are.
Going round it is apparent that it is in need of a little tlc to some rooms but well worth the visit

The house isn’t open during Covid lockdown but you can book to see the gardens which are pleasant and there is work underway to improve them adding an orchard. There is a cafe and toilets. The car park is next to the entrance. Staff are very friendly.

We are NT members but i was surprised at the low entry price to get in here. It certainly is worth more. Plenty of rooms in the house to look around and small but lovely gardens and plenty of space to have a picnic or whatnot. Ample toilet facilities and plenty of parking. My only quibble is the number of volunteers inside the house. I feel awful saying it but often we just want to look around without being interrupted about something. Just take in the atmosphere without feeling we have to talk and listen. Well meaning though they are. It can be tiresome and intrusive but wasn't as bad as some properties we have been to.

I visited here with my brother and we had a brilliant experience. The volunteers in the hall itself were incredibly insightful and told us about quirky little features of the hall which I would not have known otherwise. We were lucky enough to visit on a gorgeous June day and the gardens were breathtaking. One thing we did notice however, was the amount of litter dotted around one of the trails that leads from the gardens to the car park which was a shame, but this did not overshadow the day. We also popped into the cafe for a quick bite to eat and I was pleased to see a number of vegan options, including a delicious pesto, cheese and tomato focaccia. All in all a wonderful day. Thank you.

What is the best bus to get to Ormesby Hall from Middlesborough Bus Station and the closest bus stop to get off with the least distance to walk to the entrance of Ormesby Hall.

Beth,
To the best of my knowledge, there is no public wi-fi at Ormesby Hall. My wife has helped there as a volunteer for many years and has never heard or seen any reference to it.

Is it suitable for dogs ie can you walk them in the grounds for a couple of hours or not really?
Thanks

Why is Ormesby Hall not open on a Saturday? As along with Sunday’s and bank holidays, it would be one of there busiest days. It seems very strange that as all the properties with an admission charge in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear are open all weekend.
Written 6 September 2019
Ormesby Hall is owned and managed by the National Trust, it's not a privately owned establishment.
It is not open to the public on Saturdays as that day is reserved for weddings, a regular and popular activity that raises more revenue for the NT than the visitor numbers generate.

Thank you for your question Rosie H.
We do have a small selection of National Trust shop items, however our shop is in the process of being moved into a larger area with a greater selection of items. We hope that this will be available to visitors later in October 2018.
I hope this helps.

Hi does the main gate close at 5pm or is that just the hall itself ? Could we still walk round the woodland after 5pm

Hi, the hall and car park closes at 5pm, but access to the estate is past that time but only by walking.

Is there stuff to do for the kids (10/11yo)?
Written 14 July 2018
There is a large park area with croquet and a table tennis table. There are lots of children activities over the summer but I would check online as to what they are and when. On the top floor there is two rooms filled with a miniature railway.
If the weather is good, take a picnic and enjoy.
Hope this helps!
