Welcome to our Steam Museum.

Believed to be the largest private collection of steam engines in the UK.

We are not just a Steam museum, we are steeped in history going back several generations. On March 4th 1824, 29 respected politian's and businessmen got together in a pub in London and started a movement that would save lives to this day. Sir Charles Flower was one of those men who started what is now the RNLI.

--

The history makes our museum special.

In 1881 William James Holmes returned from Scotland (his father having married the daughter of Sir Charles Flower). His son William Charles Flower Homes took over the estate in 1908 and built a generator and produced the first electricity in Strumpshaw.

The family traditions still live on in the museum, a place where the past can be seen in all the steam engines and the farm machinery that helped shape our future. Bring a picnic lunch, sit in the paddock on a Summer's day and just enjoy the view.

Great little museum. The museum is run by volunteers. It is great to see the old engines and machinery of the past. Several of the old engines are in working order and running. There is one engine in particular that is huge, and it always amazes me when it is fired up.

There are some interesting exhibits but more, clear, information would help - as would 'putting a duster around'. The museum seemed rather sad and tired inside: sorry.

Hi, Apologies for the late reply. Thanks for your comments, we really appreciate it feedback from our visitors and will take this on board. As we are run solely by volunteers and being a fairly large museum with lots to maintain, it's tricky to keep on top of everything. Thanks, Museum team. More

Had a good afternoon out at the Steam Museum. Kids loved the ride on the small scale steam train, especially as they got to sit in the front with the driver. Museum it's self is small but on the day we visited there was a fair on to keep us interested longer.

I joined the steam rally on the 2nd and 3rd of September. Price was £5 for entrance to the show including entrance to the museum. Some very interesting steam engines in the museum. Other exhibits include tractors, a carousel, old coin operated games, farm machinery and other memorabilia. The show had working steam engines, road building demo, wood carving, dog show,... More

They've got a few interesting pieces, including a couple of large pumping engines and an oil engine, a carousel, a theatre organ, and some large traction engines. So the collection is good, but the documentation is slim. There isn't much information about the collection, and the staff on hand know next to nothing (I knew way more about the oil... More

We went when the classic vehicles were there which was a nice addition as don't think we would have been able to stay long otherwise and had planned it as a full day out- there was a small museum section and shop. Our goddaughters enjoyed the push along train ride and also the outdoor train ride and there was a lovely... We came here over the steam rally weekend. I have to say what an amazingly organised event! Value for money for entry fee was a big yes for us! The cadets where a credit to you, not only for guiding all the engines to the main arena safely but for how I saw one young girl handling an emergency situation... More

We went to the Steam Rally, which we try and do every year and always visit the museum as part of the visit. This year we took our five-year-old grandson. A wonderful day out with plenty to see and do. I can understand some of the comments made about the museum itself but as part of a steam rally it... More

We really enjoyed the museum, it's not modern as has been said, but it's a step back in time, and that's part of its charm,we had the pleasure of hearing the huge Art Deco organ being played, worth going just for that, and we also had a ride on a wonderful old fairground ride, that has been restored, the staff...
