About
The Whitby Jet Heritage Centre houses the last remaining example of an authentic Victorian Jet Workshop. We are proud to act as custodians of a unique and historic piece of local history and to offer the chance to view the only remaining example of Whitby Jet's nineteenth century cultural heritage, an original Jet Workshop discovered sealed in an old attic of a derelict property in Burns Yard, Whitby. We strive to develop new ways of presenting Whitby Jet, whilst still incorporating the traditional methods of manufacture and design. As well as producing a hand carved range of contemporary styles we are the only craftspeople to offer many styles that pay homage to the carving styles of the mid-nineteenth century. Pleas note: Our building is 250 years old so has 3 steps leading down to it. The Victorian Workshop has been kept completely authentic as it was found and is the size of a small attic due to this we do not recommend parties of more than 6 at a time in the workshop. We are always happy to help so when visiting us if you have any questions or would like further information please just ask.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When you walk down the cobbled street in Whitby you will see a lot of shops selling Whitby jet jewellery, at the end of the street tucked in one corner is The Whitby Jet Heritage Centre. Inside is an original workshop showing how the "jet" was worked when it was first made into Jewellery. This is only a small workshop but well worth visiting and turning back time. It could be improved by an audio commentary. Access is poor for the infirm.

I had a couple of hours for a solo mooch around the jet shops in Whitby and explored all of them. There were some lovely places but this was by far the best. I was welcomed by the daughter in this father/daughter business and she was so friendly, chatty and interesting. The jet is beautiful and skilfully crafted and there were so many pieces I liked I had to go home and mull it over before going back to purchase. There was no pressure to buy, just a passion for what they did and truly beautiful jewellery in a fascinating setting. Highly recommended.

We looked at lots of jewellers and shops selling jet because we were looking for a special birthday present.
Then we popped into this place and checked out the victorian workshop before looking at the jewellery. The shop is run by a father and daughter team and they are happy to discuss jet carving and jewellery making and obviously love thier craft and the material itself. We learnt a lot AND I feel in love with jet and amber earrings and pendants made by Dad (who was busy at his craft in a corner of the shop). The victorian style earrings he makes are pretty special too. The daughter is learning the trade and has designed a modern design where constellations are shown on discs of jet - very attractive.
We brought some jewellery and it's even more special because we met the artist who made them. Check out the museum and the shop - for history and some really interesting pieces of art you can wear as jewellery (and jet is so light and warm to wear - you'll be amazed).

Fantastic little centre with a small museum (free entry) displaying the old tools used to make jet jewellery. Located on the way to the 199 steps. Passionate staff who were happy to explain the history of Jet. The beautiful jewellery for sale was all made by the young girl serving or her father. You get a authenticity certificate with your purchase which is a bonus as there are shops in Whitby selling lower grade jet apparently. If you want some Whitby Jet buy it from here.

During property alterations some years ago, a complete jet-workers' workshop was discovered, sealed away in the roof of a building. The equipment was salvaged and re-installed on the ground floor, complete with explanatory notices.
See how the treadle-operated machines cut, drilled and polished the semi-precious black stone, transforming it from slabs of dull black rock into exquisite pieces of jewelry, once made popular by Queen Victoria as she mourned the loss of her beloved Albert.

Popped in to view a museum...not quiet that but an interesting history of jet makers. The last remaining work shop, discovered when renovation started and recreated.facinating but brief. The owner is an engaging man with exceptional talent in creating jet jewellery. His creations stand out amidst the miraide of other shops selling shiny jet. His works of art are without parallel, a true craft man. Don't buy jet jewellery until you have visited his studio..here you will see just how beautiful jet is and possibly buy something outstanding..jet jewellery is expensive so my advise buy an artisan piece not a shiny bauble.

Visited and fell in love with a certain pair of earrings but there wasn't a pendant to match. The owner Hal offered to make one for me to match if we came back about 3 hours later. Did it beautifully and made it feel that bit special to know mine was a one off! Definitely recommend and you get a signed and dated certificate of authenticity.

Very interesting and worth a visit. If you are wanting to buy some real Whitby jet then this is one of the few places that you will get it. Very nice man who actually makes the items for sale, will undertake commissions if you have something in mind.

We've visited Whitby many, many times but hadn't realised that this was a shop. Many jewellers sell Whitby jet but this shop will make jewellery designed to order. You can watch the workman making the jewellery. Very interesting.
