We visited Fishergate Bar during our walk around the city walls of York, this gateway has an interesting back story having been burnt during a rebellion against taxes levied by Henry VII and then subsequently being bricked up until the early 19th century. The impressive looking gateway dates back to a time when a city wall defended the city and these carefully guarded gateways controlled access to and from the city. The grave of the notorious highway man ‘Dick Turpin’ may be found close by. It is possible to join the city wall walk here in either the clockwise or anticlockwise direction, though if you are passing when on the wall it is necessary to descend the stairs and then climb back up to the wall once more.

Fishergate Bar is one of six gateways into the city of York ,part of the Roman fortress defence walls ,the first mentioning of Fishergate Bar was in 1315 ,it was actually known as " Barram Fishergate " ,this current structure dates from 1487 and was constructed by Sir William Tod,Mayor Of York and is emblazoned with the coat of arms of York.
The bar was damaged in 1489 in what was known as the " Yorkshire Revolt " against the heavy taxation imposed on the city by King Henry VII ,the gateway was subsequently bricked up but reopened in 1834 to allow access to the cattle market.
Walking the walls it's great to take in the history of this city and see the influence that the positioning of the walls and bars shaped the layout of York.
Well worth checking out if your in the area and easy to locate along George Street.

There are six gateways into the city of York, the Fishergate Bar is certainly one of the most historic .
Part of the Roman defence walls ,first mentioned in 1315,known locally as Barram Fishergate ,this gateway we see today dates from 1487 and was constructed by the then Mayor of York William Tod,across the gateway is the coat of arms of York.
Damaged in 1489 in the Yorkshire Revolt ,instigated by the high taxation imposed by King Henry VII,bricked up after the revolt was smashed ,it was reopened in 1834 to allow access to the cattle market.
Nowadays it's an integral part of the Roman Walls that encase this beautiful city my twin brother walked around the walls on a cold but bright Tuesday morning ,we admired the Fishergate Bar,took a few photos before we moved on,it's most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning on walking around the walls.

This is part of York's ancient City walls and its one with a lot of history. The gateway was bricked up in 1489 due to rebels burning the gates after murdering the Earl of Northumberland and you can still see the scorch marks. The rebels weren't happy when Henry VII increased taxes The gateway wasn't reopened again until 1834. If you follow the walls one way you will come to Walmgate bar and the other you will come to Fishergate Tower.

This is one of several gates we encountered during our walk on the old Wall of York,
We had to climb down the wall and go up again, as it wasn't possible to go over the gate.
