Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

At the back of St Crux church lies the shortest street in England There is a street sign and a Brass plaque marking the spot . An intriguing name but nothing to see

The attraction is the name!

Its a short street which isn't particularly attractive, given the other streets you can visit in York.

Still, its only around the corner from the Shambles so you aren't going out of your way to see it.

Whip- Ma-whop-Ma-Gate has the distinction of being the smallest street in York if not the United Kingdom, located between Colliergate and Fossgate and intersects Pavement and Stonebrow but in reality its just a raised piece of pavement between St Crux Church and the busy road ,to give an indication how small this street is ,by the time you say the name of the street you've probably walked it .
The unusual name Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate is from old English Whitnourwhatnourgate which meant Whit Nor What Street which could mean " Nothing At All " or " Neither one thing nor the other " if you look at the plaque at the side of the street , it reads " What A Street " .
Other theories about the name of the street date back to 1505 when there was a whipping post and stocks located here , whatever the origins of the street name one thing is for sure ,people will stop and get their photo took with this strange street name and the street is in an area of outstandingly beautiful architecture.
Most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

One of the pub quiz facts about York is that Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate is the shortest street. Worth a visit to see the sign and learn more about the history. Connects the Shambles to Colliergate

the shortest street in York. Nothing to see apart from the 2 signs. A great photo opportunity that's all, but must be done.

I love York ,always have done ,been going here for close to 40 years ,lots of interesting places to visit ,one that always amuses me is one of the shortest streets in York with one of the strangest street names.
Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate leads on from Fossgate ,it's basically a raised piece of pavement along which you will find St Crux Church ,the strange name of the street is from old English Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate ( Whitnourwhatnourgate ) which roughly translates as Whit Nor What Street which could actually mean " nothing at all " or conversely " neither one thing nor the other " and if you look at the plaque at the side of the street it states " what a street ".
There are other theories such as mentioned in 1505 there was a whipping post here so this is another possibility of the strange name of this street, either way it's a very cool street to visit.

This is the shortest street in York and is behind St Crux parish church and near the shambles and the name is said to mean 'What a street! or some say it means 'Nothing at all' or 'Neither one thing nor the other' but whatever it means its all very strange and amusing and I love it!

Whip- Ma- Whop- Ma-Gate is the smallest street in York ,although its between Colliergate and Fossgate and insects Pavement and the Stonebrow in York it is in fact just a raised pavement between the beautiful St Crux Church and the road, you could probably walk the length of this street by the time you can say Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate.
The street gets its unusual and lyrical name Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate from the old English name Whitnourwhatnourgate which meant " Whit nor What street " this could actually mean " Nothing at all " or conversely " Neither one thing nor the other " there's also a plaque on the street that reads " What a street " ,there are other theories to the name of the street first mentioned in 1505 ,there was a whipping post and stocks located here that could be the origins of the name of the street ,whatever are the origins of the name of the street called Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate one thing is for sure ,the streets is in an area of outstandingly beautiful architecture and teeming with pubs, bars and restaurants and is most definitely well worth checking out.
