About
The York Cat Trail features more than 20 cat sculptures that have been placed on buildings in the city. Legend has it that it all started in 1920, when Sir Stephen Aitcheson placed two on a building that he owned in Low Ousegate, and others joined in by adding cat sculptures to their own buildings. In 1979, a local architect, Tom Adams, placed additional cats on buildings he had designed. The fun is in finding these sculptures as you make your way along the "trail". Maps are available for those who want to find all of them. More information can be found on the Visit York website.

Great way to keep the kids excited about seeing the sights of York.
Great way to spend a couple of hours seeing the sights of York while keeping the kids interested! Did this trail with 2 kids aged 7 and 5 and they loved it, took about 2 hours, including a stop for a drink, which was a perfect length of time for them not to get bored or tired. Tour takes you round the centre of York so you can see alot of the sights you'd want to see anyway, and it's free so that's a bonus. There are a few questions to answer for the kids, and they then get a lovely little prize from the cat gallery at the end. All in all a really nice way to spend a couple of hours exploring with the kids!

A treat for cat lovers and explorers alike!
I love cats anyway so the York Cat trail was something we’d already planned to do before we visited York, but it surpassed expectations. If I’d s great way to explore the city and keeps the interest of any little ones in the group. We definitely found things we would never otherwise have done, including some fantastic pug stops. And starting at the Cat Gallery s good opportunity to stock up on cat themes products too!

Good fun, short walking tour of the city
Did this trail at February half term with a 9 and 13 year old. They both really enjoyed it but probably aimed more at the younger one. Doesnt take too long and you get a good tour of the city centre. Nice little gift at end as well. Recommended

The best way to see the city centre
The map isn't 100% easy to follow, but it's trying to encompass a medieval city with streets that grew up organically rather than in a grid, so that's forgiveable. Even if you don't especially like cats, this is a cool way to see the city centre. The cats are all different and full of personality, and finding them is just easy enough to avoid being frustrating but just challenging enough to be worth a little celebration each time.
Can't argue with any of those comments. Thank you very much for a thoughtful 5* review.

    Sightseeing with cats is fun
Two days after we have completed the cat trail, my mum and I said, "look how many beautiful buildings we saw". We had my 10yo son with us, so it was a great way to explore York's narrow streets and historical spots. The cat gallery did a great job, and the gift at the end was a bonus. Thank you. What a clever idea!
Thank you for sharing such lovely feedback on Tripadvisor. I would like to give a big shout out to tourism professional, Keith Mulhearn, who devised The Cat Gallery's York Cat Trail in 2010. He did a great job and will love the fact that it has allowed many thousands of visitors to discover more of the beautiful and historic City of York.

    Fun for all ages!
We picked up the flyer for the trail at our hotel and we were pleased we did. It gave us a route around the city to places we probably wouldn’t have seen. It was fun trying to be the first to spot the cat! Fun for all ages! (We are both oldies!)
Thank you for the 5* review. We distribute the Cat Trail leaflet to many York hotels and attractions. It is also available from Visit York Tourist Information Centre on Parliament Street as well as dispensers outside The Cat Gallery on Low Petergate (so accessible 24/7).

York Cat Trail - Purrfect fun!
We recently visited York for a few days and while we were there we picked up a leaflet for the York Cat Trail. The trail seemed to be aimed at children, but we decided to do it anyway as a way to get to know the city a little better. We were so pleased we did. The trail took us down roads we would never have otherwise gone. We discovered shops we were not previously aware of, short cuts from one side of the city to the other, and of course we learnt so much more about the city than we ever expected to. It was great fun trying to spot each cat on their respective building and learn a little about each moggy in the process. Great fun for children of all ages right up to 60 years+.
Thank you for a great review. The Cat Trail is absolutely suitable for all ages, and as well as taking you past many of the key visitor sights, also takes you to streets you'd never otherwise visit. So glad you enjoyed it!

    York cat trail
A really lovely way to explores parts of the city we would have missed otherwise - extra bonus that it’s free! We would never have noticed so many cats cleverly hidden in plain sight without the trail map and its helpful clues. There were some streets on the trail we had walked down many times - yet still missed the hidden cat sculptures. The cat trail was my 13 year olds favourite part of our recent visit to York. He loved reading out the story’s and facts for each cat and his sister loved trying to be the first to spot each cat. Definitely recommend for all ages!
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Tripadvisor community. We are delighted that the Cat Trail facilitated some great family memories.

    Great fun!
We completed the cat trail with our 5 year old and we all really enjoyed following the trail! Was a great free activity to do and also get to explore the city at the same time. We had passed by several buildings before and not noticed the cats until we followed the trail. It was lovely for our son to get a prize at the end too, would definitely recommend for any ages!
Staff at The Cat Gallery get a lot of pleasure seeing happy families returning from the Cat Trail! Thank you so much for the positive feedback.

Free fun and a bit of focus
A gem of a freebie in what can be an expensive visit to York. Pop into the shop (there's no hard sell to buy anything) and pick up the cat trail leaflet at the cash desk. Use it to find cat models throughout the city. It gave our wanderings some purpose and direction and the finds were awesome. You can do a shorter one for little legs but we did the whole thing. With unofficial ones popping up too you get a bit obsessed but it's great fun.
Thank you very much for your kind and helpful review

Brilliant day out looking for the cats on The Cat. Our 7 year old daughter loved following the map from The cat gallery
There was just one we couldn’t find because of the flood
You even get a wristband at the end for completing the mini quiz

This was great fun! It starts and ends in the lovely Cat Gallery and takes you all over the city, into areas you may not go if not doing the trail. It kept the kids (ages 9 and 10) engaged the whole time and we all really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it as a fun (FREE) thing to do when I'm York.

I had a blast taking the York Cat Trail. You simply pick up the map at an adorable cat store and follow the clues around York. It takes some sharp eyes and a willingness to walk as well as paying attention to the clues. I found 20 of the 22 on the main part of the map.

Loved the cat trail! This is a great way to explore York, especially with kids. Pick up a free trail map from The Cat Shop or the Tourist Info shop. The clues were helpful for some of the trickier ones. Return to The Cat Shop for a free gift for kids and lots of great cat gifts to buy and warm, friendly staff. Thank you

We are an adult couple and really enjoyed this way of exploring York. Children would also absolutely love it . We picked up a map from outside The Cat Gallery which was a really cute shop to look around.
