Fairfax house offers an hour-long tour of four different rooms. The rooms themselves are fairly standard fare for old stately homes, but the hour length is only reached by a tour which is outrageously padded and slowed about as far as is humanly possible. The guide himself was also lacking in the charisma which is absolutely needed to deliver and retain interest in such a tour. What's more, the staff seem to fall into that regrettable trend that some stately house staff do of being overly smug and pretentious about their position, so were overall unfriendly and mildly condescending.

There are countless better old stately homes to visit, even around York, so unless you absolutely must see a few possessions of the Fairfax family, your time and money is better spent elsewhere.

It is disappointing to hear that your tour did not live up to expectations as our volunteer-led tours are normally very well received. I'm also confused as to why you only saw 4 rooms as there are 7 to see, as well as two grand staircases. We pride ourselves on our friendly front of house and volunteer team, as you can see from previous reviews. It is regrettable that you did not let us know of your complaints at the time, it would be been valuable to discuss your experience with you in person as we always strive to provide a positive visitor experience. If you wish to discuss this matter further please contact us on info@fairfaxhouse.co.uk.

I have been to Fairfax House a few times over the years to see the Christmas display. It has been nice and I have enjoyed it. HOWEVER, this year it is very different. I loved it and highly recommend a visit. It doesn't take too long to get around but the rooms and guides bring Christmas to life. Well done to all the staff at Fairfax House - great job.

An immersive experience into an elegant Georgian town house. Exquisitely furnished and decorated. The staff are hugely knowledgeable about both the house and the Georgian period. Ticket purchase allows multiple visits for a year.

When we visited the house was "bedecked" for Christmas with the most magnificent display of John Butler's collection of Georgian glasses - what a treat that was. Lovely friendly staff, great displays, few barriers and a really great house to visit if in York.

Great visit to Fairfax house - beautiful house (of course) but best parts were the room guides who were knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about the house and collections, and also the theming of their current 'Season for Giving' exhibition. So much thought had gone into how to display the items in each room and it added a great interpretive dimension. Lovely little pamphlet explaining each room and some lovely touches including a surprise little gift and adding a message to the Christmas treat. Entry ticket includes return entry for 12 months so if the next exhibition/theming is as carefully thought through as this we'd certainly return. Despite chatting to the guides and having a good luck we were out in 50mins,so a small place, but absolutely worth it.

We didn't realise that it closed at 4 on a Sunday and turned up half an hour before closing time. Two members of staff, Simon and Stuart were brilliant and gave us a whistle stop tour of all the rooms with lots of interesting information. Very much appreciated!
A really good collection of objects, clothes and furniture for the period. Gives a good insight into Georgian life.

What a lovely place. I have to confess I do love the Georgian era especially the houses. The volunteer guides were so helpful and an absolute joy to talk to. It was heartbreaking to hear the story of the family wiped out with smallpox. Beautiful clocks and furniture (even though it is not original to the house) and amazing plasterwork and carvings. Well worth a visit

Not the best known of York's attractions, Fairfax House is a delight for anyone interested in not just the architecture of the Georgian period, but also of how people lived then. I particularly liked that the rooms had been 'styled' with accessories, books etc that gave you an insight into a moment in time, e.g. planning a Grand Tour of Europe, or the loss of all the Fairfax children to smallpox. The volunteers were helpful in adding detail. Very much enjoyed my visit

What a hidden gem! This Georgian house is a sheer delight. The staff, many of whom are volunteers, were so welcoming and well informed. I particularly enjoyed the exhibition highlighting the small pox epidemic; so thoroughly topical. Whoever thought of the idea should be congratulated; such a fresh approach to history. Well done to all concerned.
