Great diverse Museum - loved the street life section
Had a fun time at the museum, our favorite part was the recreation of an old-fashioned street and looking in all the little shop windows. The museum has a range of different themes from war and prison, to how fashion and appliances changed over time to keep you engaged. Would recommend.
Hi there, Thank you for you review! We are so glad you enjoyed Kirkgate, our Victorian Street! It is great to hear you found the rest of the museum engaging too! Thank you for recommending us, we do hope you will make use of your annual ticket and be back again another time! If you loved Kirkgate, we recommend coming back near Christmas to see it in festive decor!

One of the best museums I have visited
Brilliant Museum. There was so much to see and do and covered lots of topics. The old streets are amazing and we loved looking around them. Our daughter especially liked the toy and fashion sections and enjoyed playing the games in the court yard. The entrance fee is definitely good value for money.
Hi there, thanks so much for your review! We're so glad your daughter enjoyed our many interactive displays and play areas. It's always great to hear that our tickets are good value.

    Surprisingly Awesome
I was pleasantly blown away by this museum. It is beautifully curated and the period settings are simply stunning. The Victorian Street recreation was the best imo followed by the Prison. At £14 it wasn't cheap but I thought it money well spent. Highly Recommended
We love to hear this feedback! Our Victorian street is a special place, and it's great to hear how much you enjoyed it. Our tickets are annual tickets, which means you can visit us as many times as you like for a year. We hope you will be back again soon!

    Must visit
A destination that I visited without really knowing what I would see, The name comes from the location rather than being to do with the long removed castle and has no relation to English Heritages Clifford's Tower. There is a one way route that is easy to follow, with every section based on a different time period for all ages. The Victorian Street recreation is the best part, staff dressed up as people would have at the time, and I loved how over the time you are there the lighting / sound runs over a 24 hour period from dark to bright sunny day. The entrance fee isn't too expensive, you can learn so much and well worth a visit.
I'm so glad you were happily surprised by all the treasures we have here at the Castle Museum! It's great to hear that you found it easy to navigate, engaging, and well worth the money! Do visit us again soon.

    York Castle Museum
Before visiting York, I found this museum on Trip Advisor, along with plenty of other tourist attractions in York. Whilst waiting to enter before the official opening time, I took the opportunity to purchase tickets online, as this was a cheaper option. On entry all we had to do was show the staff member our tickets, which were sent to us by email, & they last a year! This museum is set in a old jail, & every aspect of the museum has been thought through in detail. There is something for all ages to learn. I would definitely suggest taking at least 3 hours plus, as it’s a massive place. The museum is broken up into two sides, with a café in between to stop for refreshments. My only criticism would be, during our visit we brought our young child & wanted to use one of the baby carriers. The staff were unable to show us how to use them, & there were no instructions, maybe it wouldn’t go a miss, to provide instructions for the public or at least help, because putting it on wrong, is more of a risk!
Good morning, Thank you for your review! We are glad you enjoyed your visit and felt it was well thought through. We hope you will make the most of your annual ticket and come back to visit us another time. Thank you for your feedback r.e. the baby carriers, we will pass this onto the relevant team!

A welcome walk through the history of York
Parking nearby. Museum split into 2 sections. Allow a 2-4 hours to view all of the museum.there’s dungeons, world war 1 & 2 prison yard, condemned cell, re-enactment of a Victorian street… and much more. Tickets approximately £14 each but you can revisit again anytime within that year so we’ll worth the cost. Toilets were clean, helpful staff. Don’t recommend the cafe except for a cup of tea.
Hi there, Thank you for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your visit and the range of objects we have on display! We hope you will make the most of your annual ticket and come back to visit us again soon. We are glad your staff made your visit enjoyable. The cafe is run by an external company, so we will pass your feedback onto them!

Visited York museum today half way round we decided to go for a coffee, the plastic cup was filthy the t-pot badly stained glass and the lid needed a good wash, milk jug wasn’t much better. We returned them to the counter the lady gave us a full refund. Never have I seen such disgusting pots I think someone should take a look at them quickly. I know this isn’t run by yourselves but it’s letting you down .

I think this is a great space. It makes use of a building that’s steeped in history and displays it for all ages to enjoy. The Victorian street is, of course, the main pulling factor because it’s all so beautifully done, and the interactivity is fantastic. This doesn’t last very long, however, and I find myself passing over to the 60’s section rather quickly.

I’m not sure why there’s a 60’s section. I’m not sure of the point, but I did enjoy watching a clip from 1963 Doctor Who. The jail is wonderful to poke around in; it’s an eerie space, but there isn’t much to read or do in there, so I moved by quite quickly. I do feel I was lucky enough to be there on a quieter day, so nothing felt too crowded which it definitely had the potential for.

Overall, it passed on an hour or so, and I enjoyed the visit! £19 isn’t amazingly cheap, but I still didn’t mind paying it.

Excellent and interesting Museum, giving you a great insight into old York and as well as the prison that used to be on the site. Definitely worth pre-booking as it’s cheaper.

I can’t believe we nearly didn’t come here on our recent trip to York as it was simply amazing! The prison museum area was brilliant with projected characters giving commentary. The Victorian street (Kirkgate) was amazing to see and such an incredible backstory. Really great section on The Great War too and the Cafe is nice. Really brilliant visit and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Dick Turpin’s cell, the day to night cycle on Kirkgate. What’s not to love?! So impressive.

Had an amazing time visiting. there is so much to see. my favorites being the old prison cells and kirkgate the Victorian street. I like the fact that once you have paid you can come back again for a year for free. i noticed a few rooms with toys for children to play with and outside were some circus games. i wasn't as interested in the war rooms but my partner loved them, so i would say there is something for everyone.

Fantastic experience!

We loved learning about the history of the museum and it was fascinating walking into each area, particularly walking through Kirkgate.

The whole experience was brought to life by one of the guides, James, who was absolutely excellent at regaling facts and figures and telling us how many areas of the museum came to be. The talk he gave in the pharmacy was superb - we learnt so much!

I would definitely revisit and would highly recommend the experience.

Thank you to James for being a wonderful guide - he is a credit to the museum!
