We visited recently some churches in Chester and York and although many are more popular and recommended I think that this church is the one that impressed me most. Apart from the silence and reverent atmosphere there are really some treasures to look at. Definitely...More

This year, we decided to visit as many of the historic churches of York as could - both living and redundant. St. Martin's is well worth a visit. It is centrally situated and a brilliant job has been done of restoring it after the damage...More

As people have already commented, it's the clock that draws you in but the masterpiece is the stained glass window dating from the 15th century (I think). Fortunately, this window was removed during the 2nd World War which saved it from disaster with bombs falling...More

This is a special little church with an interesting history. I was the only one in the church and to sit in peace and soak in the atmosphere was such a treat.

York was bombed once during WWII. Read about it before you go. This church was hit and destroyed. The stain glass window was removed before the bombing and thus saved. The church was rebuilt and the original stain glass window was reinstalled. Worth seeing if...More

This was my second visit here and this time the church was busy with a Christmas card sale. The church was extensively bombed in WW2 and was derelict for many years but is now a working church.

Such a beautiful church, very small, intimate setting for today's lunchtime concert. Concerts are regularly held in here. It was a sunny day outside so the colours from the stained glass windows were lit in a spectacular way from the sun outside. Nice accoustic inside...More

Lovely place hidden away in a side street. We were pulled in by the wonderful clock and weren't expecting the fab stained glass and other historical artefacts! Frustratingly we were unable to leave any money as the donations box was full. Hopefully one of the...More

St. Martin's was not easy to find since there was a lot of construction going on in the area, but we persevered and found it! Some of the windows are really spectacular!
