Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to The Minster Pub and we passed St Olave's Church ,a wonderful looking church that's just a joy to visit.
Dedicated to the patron saint of Norway namely St Olaf ,the church dates back to the 15th century ,renovated in the 1720's and restored to it's former glory between 1848-1849 to leave us with the church we see today .
The church is well known for it's choir and organ concerts as well as it's carillon of six bells ,I just love the look of this church ,really photogenic ,makes for some great photogenic opportunities ,it's a church I highly recommend you check out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Marygate .

Tucked away on the edge of the museum gardens is this little gem full of history. Visually it has considerable appeal, including stained glass windows, which can clearly be added to when the occasion arises. It also has a wonderful old stone wall.

Something of a hidden gem. A proper parish church. They sometimes host the most fantastic choirs. Nice cheap local pub opposite.

11th century christian church dedicated to a norwegian king. It's situated just outside the museum gardens and I found it very inspirational with a calming down effect. Try to see if you feel the same.

St Olave's church provides a reminder of York's Viking heritage. It was named after the St Olaf the patron saint of Norway, the warrior King who brought Christianity to the country in the early 11th C. There is a statue of him just over the main entrance. You can find the church just behind St Mary's abbey in museum gardens. The church was founded by Danish Earl Siward in 1050, but most of the building you see today is from the 15th C.

I lived in York around the corner from the church and was in the choir and eventually head chorister in the late 1960's and early 70's. The church has endured a lot mistreatment, from death-watch beetle to being used as an observation point in the English Civil War.
The church has hidden gems, like the carved mice on the pews from 'The Mouseman', Mousey Thompson of Kilburn, just to the north of York and overlooked by the White Horse. The font is a real gem, in fact I won't mention any more so that you can enjoy finding them for yourself! Take a minute to walk around the church and look at the Stations of the Cross. Enjoy the church - it's beautiful!
Hope to renew our wedding vows in the autumn of 2015 here.

A church I've walked past on several visits to York and wondered about the reason for its dedication to the patron Saint of Norway. This was all explained inside the church which is now open more often and holds an Anglican Sung Eucharist service on Sunday mornings. Steeped in history with a welcoming clergy and friendly parishioners.

Not one of the most known about or visited church's in York but St Olave's is one of the most interesting. It is just outside of the Museum Garden's on Marygate so if you are in the area take time to find.

This ancient church with a fascinating link back to York's Norse background, is a little gem. It is situated close to one of the entrances to the Museum Gardens but could easily be missed.
It is a beautiful chuch that is very much a living place of worship.
In the graveyard there is the tomb of William Etty, an artist whose life and works had a big impact in York.
