About
The Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial is located on the outskirts of the City of York within easy reach of the City centre. The Museum welcomes family visitors, with lots of things to keep everyone in the family entertained. We are also pet friendly, so you won't need to leave your four legged part of the family home alone. Authentically based on an original World War II Bomber Command Station, this unique history museum is filled with a great combination of original buildings to explore, including the restored Control Tower and more than forty aircraft exhibits, from early aviation biplanes to our unique Halifax Bomber "Friday The 13th" all the way to modern Cold War military jets such as the Victor, Nimrod and Tornado jet fighters. Our regular Thunder Days are always popular as a great family day out and our NAAFI cafe has a range of snacks, drinks and meals for everyone. Our guides are on hand to help you explore the museum. They are all volunteers and love to read your reviews!

- chris f8 contributionsYour ticket is valid for a year. It's been a while since I last visited the museum during one of the gaps in the covid pandemic. They've done a lot of work and it's looking so much better. You can book online. Your ticket allows you multiple visits a year. More in keeping with expectations. The NAAFI cafe is very good. Decent coffee to go with a slice of cake or a full meal. It was busy on the 29th of December. The presentation of exhibits has also improved. The hangers and buildings looking good. Mostly done by volunteers. Nice one.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2022
- Ruth InYork4 contributionsGreat heart warming museum! This museum is a little gem. We have been before but this was particularly special visit. We were a mixed generational group (young adults, 50 somethings and 80 somethings!) and we were there to celebrate my father's 84 birthday. There was a talk on by one of the volunteer guides (they are all so knowledgeable and keen to share their passion) about the RAF in the Falklands War which was thoroughly enjoyed by us all. We then had lunch and cake (we had phoned ahead and a cake had been very kindly arranged by the café team) - it was low key in the best way and perfect. We all loved it.Visited January 2023Written 29 January 2023
- Phil C3 contributionsA fascinating placeThis museum is packed with intersting aircraft and exhibits. The staff are very helpful and keen to share their knowledge with visitors. The exhibitions are spread around several WW2 buildings, an original Air Traffic Control tower, and two hangars. The main hangar contains an interesting mix of aircraft, centered around one of only two Halifax bombers left in the world. I mentioned that my father piloted one, and the guide couldn't have been more helpful in explaining the aircraft. He even took ius to another building where we found a picture of 77 Sqn with my father in it. It's well worth a visit.Visited February 2023Written 6 February 2023
- Susanne S1 contributionHistorically fascinating place, great day outWe have visited a few times now, especially as our eldest son is a plane fanatic. He loves being able to explore inside the Dakota. The museum is really interesting and historically so important. There's such a sense of peace here too. We visited in half term and ate in the cafe. Staff were amazing given how busy it was and the food was delicious. Really friendly staff & volunteers across the site who clearly love what they do. Thanks to all!Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 February 2023
- peter lambert5 contributionsA very interesting placeWe were staying in York in our motorhome and looked for places to visit. This place came up on a list of things to do. We were not disappointed, there's lots to see. Well laid out exhibits, with lots for children to pick up on. The Cafe on site is very well run, with great food and drinks on offer at very sensible prices. We spent about 4 hours looking round, and could have spent longer. A nice touch is that if you can Gift Aid, your tickets let you re-visit as often as you want in the year.Visited February 2023Written 1 March 2023
- Granvillepet3 contributionsGreat value, knowledgeable staff and a great cafe.Another fabulous day! Thank you Derek Earp for your patience, humour and incredible knowledge when taking my dad around the Halifax bomber. He had an amazing afternoon. The cafe was great as always giving service with a smile and tasty food. Allowing dogs in the cafe now very welcome! We’ll be back again for sure!Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 March 2023
- Amy DBeverley, United Kingdom22 contributionsBrilliant place to visitWe have visited multiple times with our two young boys. It’s a great place to visit and has lots to entertain vehicle obsessed children. We last visited on the Emergency Services Day, this was fabulous. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be visiting again.Visited September 2022Travelled with familyWritten 11 March 2023
- 123ColinW202Oxford, United Kingdom16 contributionsGreat Aircraft MuseumThis has been on my list to visit - we went last weekend. An interesting collection of aircraft, both outside and in hangars. A lot of other exhibits to see. The NAAFI restaurant was serving hot and cold food and the service was friendly and efficient! Your ticket is valid for a year, so we didn't look at everything, we plan to go back again!Visited March 2023Written 11 March 2023
- JamieGValentineHarrogate, United Kingdom1 contributionGreat experienceVisited for the first time today with my 2 boys, had a fantastic time. Lovely helpful staff, lots to see, the Halifax gave me chills thinking about what it (and the crews) had been through. Looking forward to seeing the control tower! Well definitely be back.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 March 2023
- CBG2007York, United Kingdom115 contributionsInteresting bit of aviation historyVery well put together and an interesting insight into local and wider military aviation. A former airbase with lots of stories to tell. Some good displays and a bargain for the price, as you can return numerous times. Nice tea room - good cake - full of old characters. I shall return.Visited March 2023Written 20 March 2023

Gem of a museum. Many of the airframes are kept in running condition. The buildings are a fantastic backdrop in themselves. Some really great history and other items on site. Well worth the entry fee, as the tickets are valid for a year! I'll be visiting again when the aircraft are in the open. Thankfully they bring all of the airframes they can into their hangars in colder times of year. If you visit during winter the hangars are quite full.

Not a huge museum. But it was a great walk around.
It was brilliant to learn the local history and the history of that once working airfield.
Probably took us about 2hours to walk round.
Had a pit stop at the cafe and had a brew. Plenty of seating and the staff were lovely.

Its half term and the weather isn't great. After some discussion we chose the Museum for a 6 year old and a 2 year old to visit. We met a lovely lady on reception, who also did the teas and coffees and looked after the gift shop. The museum was a great choice as there was so much for them to see and do, the training module was a real hit with both of them and the fact that you could sit in some of the models was also well received. We went round several times as there was different thingf for each of our grandchildren to see. We would defintely go back.

Absolutely fantastic! I can highly recommend this attraction if you are into aircraft and wish to learn more from the numerous volunteers who are mostly ex-RAF employees, extremely friendly and highly knowledgeable. My son and I pre-booked a guided tour on board the Handley Page Halifax at an additional cost with Derek Earp who was simply fantastic. He had taken the time to research our two family members, who sadly perished in WW2 onboard Halifaxes, and really made the experience live for us - what he did not know about the aircraft was not worth knowing! Huge thank you to Ian Richardson for helping to organise this. I'd also like to acknowledge another Derek for his interesting anecdotes and enthusiasm for the aircraft on site - the volunteers really made our day! We loved the Halifax, enjoyed the Dakota as well as the many other aircraft and informative displays - and the Naafi was pretty impressive too! The volunteer research team have been extremely helpful with my own family genealogy project upon 78 Squadron - if only I'd had more time and lived locally. Many thanks for a great day out

Me and my wife visited here in October. My father is an avid World War enthusiast and recommended we visit.
The price for entry was relatively standard at £14 per adult. Ample parking and a nice little gift shop/entrance section.
There were many buildings to go into around the airfield. All of which had great exhibitions and a lot of information to read.
The jets/bombers/tanks and other vehicles on site were maintained to a high standard and it really felt like you were on an authentic base.
There were several tour guides available to ask questions in the main hanger and it featured some stunning planes on display.
The cafe on site was more than ample for light refreshments and the staff were polite and friendly.
On the whole we were there for about 2 hours and I’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in the York area.

Located at Elvington, we visited back in April and vowed to return as it was so interesting. There has been so much updating and improving the visitor experience since April we were bowled away. They have opened up the tower for viewing. There is a new brilliant outdoor play area for the children. The entrance has been enhanced and now includes the museum shop. There have been quite a few new outside exhibits added too. The staff and volunteers are all very friendly and helpful.

There are plenty of small buildings that have exhibits in, a cinema, a cafe. The largest is a hanger that has a lot of different planes, and other items. You could be in there for a good hour if you wanted to see and read the plaques that tell you what they are. I hope that answers your question.

I would estimate a 20 to 25 minutes drive. All depends on the traffic in York city centre.
I'm not a wheelchair user but I'd say the Air Museum is very wheelchair friendly.
The staff are also extremely helpful.
