York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

Not liking heights, I always book seats in the stalls. I was a little late in booking for Night Must Fall and we landed in Row D at the very end. However, we were comfortable and enjoyed the acting. I really prefer comedy farce but wanted to see this one because Daragh O'Malley (Sharpe) was in it. Ending a bit... More

The staff were extremely knowledgable and we learned a lot about the old St Leonard's Hospital, medical treatment and so much more. Although this is only a tiny space, there is a lot of information and hands on exhibits

I guess I am reviewing the venue rather than the play so here goes. The venue itself looks stunning after the recent refurbishment, it is however completely let down with the cramped and uncomfortable seating. I can't speak for all seats but the ones we were seated in were very small, no arm rests and little leg room. The people... More

Whilst York Theatre Royal has undergone an expensive makeover to the fabric of the building, expense has certainly been spared on staff. Yesterday, visiting the theatre for a matinee, only one tiny coffee bar was open to cater for visitors. Queues were long and service so painfully slow that most people, including ourselves, abandoned all efforts to get a drink.... More

During a 4-day visit to York I saw a production of "This Might Hurt) at this theater. The play was about the pro's and mainly-the-cons of the National Health Service. As an over-60 I got a seat in the dress circle for a reasonable 14 GBP. The theater is attractive and my seat was moderately comfortable. I still can't get... More

Called in for a good cup of coffee during the afternoon then booked for a play for later that evening. Good to see all of the improvements - comfy seats an a good view in the stalls.

After it's closure it was good to see the improvements. In the auditorium the banking has been improved, as have the seats. The front of house has been improved by the building of a new bar/bistro area. I'm sure there is more to find. Maybe next time.

Since the Theatre Royal in York reopened, following it's fantastic refurbishment earlier this year, a new cafe has been created downstairs, with glass windows looking out through the gothic arches. To visit a city centre cafe in a lovely building, which not only offers the expected cakes and drinks, but also serves wonderful gluten free brownies - 3 different sorts... More

I'm not aware of York Theatre Royal ever holding a murder, mystery event but I sincerely hope they will do it again! The evening was held in the Ballroom, the beautifully, restored building adjacent to the thestre. The cast performing the murder: Make a Killing were excellent, especially the actor playing Peregrine Lackington Whit. Sadly our evening was let down... More
