York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

We were keen to see the restoration work of the Theatre Royal after it was closed for such a long period so our annual trip to the Pantomime doubled as an evaluation of the new facilities and re-design of the theatre. The Pantomime was excellent, as always - we were less impressed with the internal work on the theatre. Perhaps... More

Visited on Friday with 15 colleagues. Kaeli, Visitor services manager meet us in the recently refurbished cafe and took us off on a guided tour behind the scenes. Really interesting and Kaeli is so passionate and interesting. We all discovered things about theatre life and history. Well worth a visit

Didn't know what to expect. Standing outside the medical centre at 23 Stonegate dating back several centuries, There were men dressed in period costume asking if you needed medical assistance. Once inside a nurse assessed you and a doctor wanted to apply bandages to you.We were ushered into another room where other were gathered. Wine was available. Beautiful oak paneling.... More

Cinderella was good, but not as good as previous years as there was obviously no dame, felt a bit forced in places. As usual David Leonard stole the show, and even he wasn't his usual evil self on stage. Still great entertainment though 😎

Very entertaining and full of humour with traditional panto fun. The costumes were just amazing and the cast just made the performance with constant audience participation. This panto had a certain style which really added to the adult humour, really liked the addition of video with stars, local celebrities filmed in York to include a few locals. We sat in... More

Visited here last night to watch the Magical Cinderella Panto with my son, daughter in law & my little princess. The Panto was brilliant as usual & as I'm reviewing the Theatre not criticising the Panto, like previous advisors that's all I will say about the Panto! The theatre royal is an old building, that needed a refurb, saying that... More

This is the first show we have seen in the new auditorium and the consensus was we did not like the new layout. It is very claustrophobic. There are a lot less seats in the stalls, which now taper up towards the dress circle so you can touch the people on the back row from the front row of the... More

This is a great theatre made better by the recent refurbishment but they made one massive mistake...the toilets. They weren't the best designed before but whoever was in charge of design of the gents needs a good telling off. The new design are tiny meaning you can hardly move, there is one hand drier that if you are using no... More

I enjoyed seeing last years show at the NRM however it was great to see it back at the refurbished theatre. I was sorry to see that Martin Barrass wasn't well enough to take part but PJ Powell did a stirling job in his absence especially in the slapstick scene. I love Berwick Kalers pantomimes as they are so random.... More

My husband & I decided to eat at the theatre before our annual pantomime visit on New Year's Eve and were pleasantly surprised at the standard of the food. We ate in the Collonade bar on the ground floor , did not have to book a table in advance, and ordered just 1 course each. We then followed this with... More
