What a lovely tour learning about the history of chocolate. The tour is very well done with lots of attention to detail in the decor. You can really see the effort put into it. Our guide Lee was incredibly good! He was upbeat, funny and ‘choc full’ of information. I loved the chance to taste different chocolates and make our lollipops, and I really appreciated the many freebies we got along the tour. The museum staff were also lovely and ftriendly and the entire place smelled of chocolate. What could be better!

Great way to spend an hour or so in York!

Great fun! We visited York for the weekend and paid a visit to York’s Chocolate Story - it was well worth the price of the ticket and was a really fun way to spend an hour or so.

Katie was our guide, and she was excellent - very friendly and knowledgeable.

Plenty of freebies and the opportunity to make a chocolate lolly was fun (they were really understanding of food intolerances and went the extra mile to make sure I could take part)

Would definitely visit again!

A lift took us up to our host, a man who knew pretty much everything about chocolate, including when all our favourites were first marketed. We then were shown a couple of films that took us through the history from its origins and to the various York families.

We then got hands on, finding out more until we met a chocolatier who demonstrated how filled chocolates are made my hand – I always wondered which came first, the centre or the coating but I won’t give it away! We also each made our own chocolate to take away.

There were 14 on the tour in four different groups with just two children; social distancing was well managed. I feel it works well for adults and children.

I loved this visit and our tour guide was amazing.

I learned so much on this trip which was fun and educational. I enjoyed it more than the Cadbury visit.

Definitely worth a visit

Brilliant! Interactive, hands-on, amusing and educational

Great, interactive tour with a very entertaining host. Easily booked online in advance and excellent arrangements despite COVID. They pack a lot into a relatively short time (good, if you have kids in tow). No heavy selling of chocolate at the end, which would have really annoyed me. We bought heaps in the shop anyway. Informative, educational and fun. Definitely recommend!

A small but great experience and there’s chocolate!! So what’s better
The tour guide was great with full if knowledge and was great at getting the group to interact and being involved.
You got to make your our chocolate lolly and was given samples of chocolate before and at the end. Due to the covid restrictions you can not eat the chocolate on the tour and the groups are a lot smaller than usual for social distancing and there were spots on the floor for each couple or bubble to stand in.
You need to pre book the tickets before hand. There is a shop at the end and a cafe too

Fun and interactive tour
Jul 2021
The bulk of the tour involved moving from room to room to learn the history of chocolate in York. In each room, our guide would tell us the interesting highlights of each stage and the rooms themselves were eye-catching (e.g. the Rowntree's storefront) or played short films (e.g. the talking portraits of chocolate business founders). The tour was just the right length.

We were given sample bags of different types of chocolate, which would have been eaten throughout the tour but due to COVID we took them away instead. In the bag was a guide to remind you what you were eating, which was really helpful. Most of the chocolate in the bag was a bit gross, but that was the point - it demonstrated how different chocolate used to be!

Towards the end, we got to decorate our own lollipops, which was fun! Then a chocolatier demonstrated the truffle-making process. Overall the tour felt varied, engaging, and worth the time and money.

We're sorry to hear you felt our handmade chocolates were too expensive. We do have a wide range of products available in our gift shop to suit all price points.
