About
78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton. Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions. 78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers. Disappointing afternoon tea experience.
Booked infor afternoon tea. Took a while to find the entrance to the tea room but eventually found it and had to ring the bell to be let in, all very unwelcoming. Tea room was very small, quite chilly , condensation running down the window and quite dark. Once seated the door was closed behind us, felt very isolated. The waitress never stayed in the room so had to wait for everything. Food was ok, good savoury scone and sandwich assortment. Bruschetta is not something I expected for afternoon tea and it was quite unpleasant. Scones and jam with cream were fine but the rest of the selection of cakes were pretty bad. The meringues tasted burnt and the blueberry muffin was awful, decorated with sickly icing, a sprinkle of sultanas, candied peel and an edible flower..felt like we were an intruder in some one’s parlour, very weird. Would not go again.

    A Mackintosh marvel
Having thoroughly enjoyed the Charles Rennie Mackintosh locations in Glasgow many years ago it was a delight to take our time looking around this small terraced house he dramatically transformed in 1916, appreciating the style, workmanship, flair and beauty of so many different elements. The guide notes we were given, in addition to the supplementary ones in each room, provided a detailed and fascinating account of his vision and its execution. The staff we spoke to were friendly and clearly enthusiastic about being a part of this unique preservation. The ticket price was a very reasonable £9, with the bonus that you can return for as many viewings as you like within 12 months.

    A hidden gem in Northampton
Anyone interested in Charles Rene MacIntosh would be amused by this building designed by him, with input from the model making gentleman who bought the building. A series of to scale models on display as well as rooms displaying the obviously MacIntosh influence. We had a tour which was most interesting and informative, then had time to wander around at leisure, to take photos, etc.

A Must See for all Charles Rennie Mackintosh fans
Can't believe I'd never heard of this place before! Learnt about it through the Mackintosh Facebook page. The house was easy to find, just down from the Derngate Theatre complex. The entrance, restaurant and gift shop are housed next door in No.80. Our tour guide was welcoming and knowledgable and the history of the couple who lived there and commissioned Mackintosh was as interesting as his designs. Really enjoyed walking around each room and learning about particular features. Unfortunately it was raining so I didn't get to enjoy the garden but your ticket is valid for a year for further visits so hopefully I will return in better weather. The restaurant was full but looked worth a visit in its' own right and the gift shop sells well priced goodies.

Little gem well worth a visit.
We were having a few days in Northamptonshire and had earmarked 3 houses to visit. We were browsing what else there was, bearing in mind the weather forecast was not good and discovered this absolute gem! We loved A House for an Art Lover in Glasgow and also a recent visit to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum in Salamanca, Spain and knew we wanted to see this little treasure. It's very compact but a total treasure if you like the genre. It's been sympathetically been joined to the adjacent house with a modern glass extension and modern sculpture but it all seemed to fit together without detracting from the joy of it all. We knew nothing about Bassett-Lowe but instantly recognised his miniature model ship collection on the Antiques Roadshow on 24.9.23. The guide was brilliant and we tagged onto a tour just started, only 8 of us. At the end she filled us in the the bit we missed. Delightful gift shop too. 10/10

Small place worth a passing visit
Very small house which shows a designer/architect working with the house owner. Very small but tour guide was effective and kept the interest levels up. Cafe prices steep. Parking on the road nearby was ok mid-week and 2 hours probably enough to cover the visit. Pictures on site give a good idea of what you’re going to see.

When you visit here try to have the guided tour, it is very good and makes all the difference to be taken round by an extremely knowledgeable person. Our guide knew everything there is to know and had a good sense of humour too. A most interesting visit.

A historical gem that’s a must for anyone who is a follower of brilliant design, this is a wonderful piece of later work by C.R. Mackintosh. You also get a great insight into Bassett-Lowke, his legacy of design and model making work and his wife who were CRM’s clients. Elaine, our guide, was fabulous in telling us the story of this house, it’s history and the people involved in its creation. Elaine gave my wife, daughter and myself a visit we will not forget. It’s a story that slowly unfolds as you make your journey through the house and it’s contrasting interiors.

Have been for both brunch and lunch. Food is always good. Also been for afternoon tea - great selection and option for a child’s version too.

The venue is lovely: great setting.

Sunday visit to this house/museum. Combined with lunch at the attached restaurant next door.
We were the only people there and given a very information and thorough tour by a gentleman. Photography is allowed which is always welcome.
78 Derngate was famously re-modelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 for his client, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke.
A paradise for model train and boat enthusiasts.
The work of Mackintosh was also of great interest.
