- BoovyontourSheffield Green, United Kingdom59 contributionsDon’t miss thisGreat place to visit. Buy a Saver Ticket for the museum and Vindolanda and you will not be disappointed. It is an amazing place to visit for all ages. The two are a short drive away from each over but well worth it. The 3D interactive short film is well presented and informative. Don’t miss this museum if you are in this are. Staff are friendly and there’s a very small comfortable cafe on site offering a selection of drinks and snacks.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- Tina T17 contributionsInformative and interestingThis place was a good start to our learning about the romans! The interactive screen show was good and the museum was great to look around. The lady in reception was the nicest person and was so very helpful when sorting out our tickets. A real credit to a very lovely museum.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- Granddad IainOrmiston, United Kingdom183 contributionsWhat have the Romans ever done for us?Lots to see and good explanations about what you were looking at. They show an interesting film with a relatable story about what life was like for the Roman soldiers. However, I'm not so sure about being referred to as a 'Barbarian' just because I come from north of the wall, ouch. The cafe food was nice but them Romans need to conquer somewhere with better coffee.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Susan RStirlingshire, United Kingdom51 contributionsFantastic MuseumTruly amazing Museum and so unexpected in its size, quality and layout. It was well worth more than one hour and so much more to take in. This is more about the museum as more imagination is needed for the unexcavated fort area but a fantastic start to discover the Hadrian Wall area. Great value on the joint ticket with Vindalanda. cafe great as well.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- MarpleTravellerMarple, United Kingdom1,481 contributionsExcellent Starting Point. This site is owned by the same Trust as Vindolanda and a multi site ticket is available. It is well worth doing both sites. The Roman Army Museum explains life on the frontier of the Roman Empire. It explains Roman life at the time and also the importance of the frontier. It is a very visual experience and allows you to orientate yourself and prepare yourself for visiting the many archeological sites along Hadrians Wall.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- Stuart & Janice W10 contributionsMust do if in the areaVery interesting, well worth visiting took some effort to find as signage off the main road not good. Coffee shop reasonable price but not a lot of choices. We only visited everything indoors because the weather wasn’t good.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023
- Davecullen94 contributionsFantastic museum, amazing audio visual presentations, loved it!Just back from a day at the wall and started off here as many years since I visited. So interesting, the three films I watched including Edge of Empire were brilliant, the actors, costumes and photography totally immersed me. The reconstructions of the roman catapults were works of art, tho apparently I wasn't strong enough to make a decent archer. Nice cafe too and very helpful and pleasant gent on admissions. Really is something for everyone, three hours just flew by. Get a saver ticket doubled up with Vindolanda for a full day's experience.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 February 2024
- Myke ACarlisle, United Kingdom115 contributionsGreat little museumA really great little museum for anyone who has an interest in the Roman army and Emperor Hadrian. The staff are top form and really seem as if they care. Whilst the museum is small, there is plenty packed in there, with the video being amazing and worth the visit alone.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 February 2024
- GATDumfries, United Kingdom174 contributionsVery welcoming, educational family fun.Lovely museum. Visited with 2 adults, a 5yr old and 1 year old. Staff were fantastic, very welcoming, very interactive and fab with the kids. 5 year old got stuck into the quest sheet provided at the start, having to tick objects he found off the list and also enjoyed writing his name in roman letters. Also enjoyed the cinema room. Cafe was modern with lovely sandwiches. We bought a ticket which also included access to the VINDOLANDA roman museum down the road. So enjoyed 2 experiences in one day at a discounted price. Thanks again for a lovely welcoming trip.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 March 2024

This was the highlight of my four days along Hadrians Wall. The displays are inspired and the videos very professional. Combined site this with Vindolanda. The cafe was very pleasant the the refreshments well presented. Highly recommendedVisited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 April 2024

We visited the Roman Army museum on a Saturday in July whilst taking an extended weekend break in Carlisle. We used public transport to reach our destination and this took the form of train to Haltwistle station and then a bus (185 service bus or the excellent AD122 ‘round robin’ service), from the station to the museum. Free parking is also available at the museum.
We had pre purchased tickets to the museum which was recommended by the website, however when we arrived just after 10AM, the venue was far from busy though it did receive a steady flow of visitors as the day went on. This may be different in the school holidays.
The museum is not large but has a comprehensive amount of exhibits, some interactive giving an overview of life in and around the Roman Empires northernmost border. The exhibits are well presented and explained and the whole atmosphere of the museum is very contemporary. Interactive exhibits explain the makeup of a typical Roman legion and the differences between a legionary and auxiliary soldiers. At another display, a seasoned Roman army veteran encourages you to join the army enthusiastically extolling the virtues of army life. Also don’t miss the short video film showing how the wall and its attendant forts might have looked to new recruits being sent to this area of the empire, (we saw this twice and thought it more relevant after the free tour of the Wall town fort archaeological site, see below).
Whilst you are here there are also free guided tours around the site of the Wall town fort though as this are area is still to be excavated you will need a little more than some imagination, though the information given on the accompanying tour is interesting.
There is a small café at the museum with a good range of refreshments and snacks and we used this before moving on to find some of the wall itself.
Overall, we thought that the museum was excellent in both content and explanation and would most certainly recommend a visit here if you ate in the area. The interactive exhibits will enthral children and also engage the interest of adults as well.

Excellent Museum. Very interesting with lots of interactive items. The 1100hrs guide tour of the land surrounding the Museum was worth the effort, you are guided by an excellent guide who is very informative.

I am not sure why people skip this one?! We thought it was fabulous. I would agree with these reviews/forums that said to go here first (before Vindolanda) as it provides context & great info to understand the Roman army. Great visuals and 3D show provides great info. We purchased the “Saver” ticket which provides admission to both locations - well worth it.
Other notes include: don’t necessarily recommend the 45 tour - it is more talking than seeing - the wall has not been excavated here so nothing to see. I would say skip this part and head over to Vindolanda for a tour.
And important to some: bathrooms are in crowded and clean.

You can obtain a combined entrance ticket for the Roman Army Museum and the Vindolanda archaeological site (about 8-miles away) - both sites are owned and run by the Vindolanda Trust. My advice would be to visit the two sites on different days, as there is so much to see and take in. The museum is well presented and very informative both for people new to Roman Britain and the area of Hadrian's Wall and those who have been before and know the story of the Romans in northern Britain. A mixture of finds from the Vindolanda site and some replicas as well as films about roman life on Hadrian's Wall - all very well done
A small cafe is also on site serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cakes/scones.

One of my favourite museums in the area, absolutely exducates you fantastically on the Roman army presence in the area. The exhibits are written in plain English and it shows you the history of the wall. The 3d film "Edge of Empire" is not to be missed and always gives a great sense of the wall.
In the covid world there is hand sanitiser everywhere, staff are well protected as are guests.
Tip: It has the most picturesque view from a gift shop window you'll ever see. Trust me.

We added this into our trip to Vindolanda and I'm really glad we did. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was blown away by the information and the way in which it is presented. I can't comment on the 3D experience as sadly I am unable to view anything in 3D but we really enjoyed the rest of the museum. I particularly enjoyed the video diary of a platoon of volunteers. Whatever you do you must check out the Toilets, they are simply stunning and I salute whomever approved the design :D

Having perused the site of Vindolanda the path takes you down to the stream and the very comprehensive museum, stuffed with Roman artefacts including the world's largest collection of leather Roman shoes, all shapes and sizes. Lots of audio visual exhibits and plenty of seating, and it was WARM! Abutting the museum are cloakroom facilities, a nice restaurant and a shop . The exit is here and you can take the path back up to the carpark or sort a prearranged lift, there is a lane circuiting the site which is available for the less able.

Lovely visit enjoyed by three generations of our family.
The lady serving in the cafe made me a second coffee because she thought she hadn’t made a good enough job of the first one.
Our Grandchildren had been studying the Romans at primary school and the museum helped bring to life what they’d learned.
A super, highly recommended visit for all ages.

The Roman Army Museum works wonderfully in tandem with Vindolanda, as it fleshes out the outlines given by the archeological site and paints fuller pictures of historical fact, brimming with life and how it was lived. And in doing so added layers and narratives to what we'd garnered from our trip to Vindolanda itself.
A wonderful museum that adds to our understanding of Roman times and is an excellent adjunct to Vindolanda. If you go to one you must go the other.

I enjoyed a visit to the Roman Army Museum. There are a few artefacts but not many. There was more information about the Roman Army and a short video to watch.
There is a small shop and cafe with limited options open (due to COVID19, there are some restrictions and needed cash to pay at the museum.)

What times does it open and close on a Sunday. Also how long would be needed to see the museum?
Written 25 April 2023
Is it possible to do the museum and Vindolanda on the same day or would you recommend visiting on different days?
Written 28 July 2021
Well, for me it depends on if you’re a tick it off person or a wallow in it person! The two places have different vibes, different topographies; personally I think something would be lost by crashing through both on the same day, but that’s just me. As others have said, it’s perfectly possible to do both in a day; but if you don’t have to, and you have the luxury of time, I’d do each separately. Either way, have a great time!

Hi, the museum is indoors and very good, I believe that only assistance dogs only are allowed inside. Hope this helps.
Written 11 August 2019
Yes, although rather small so could be crowded at peak times.

Can kids get to try on roman costume like togas/tunics/armour?
Written 10 February 2017
Currently the museum does not have a roman costume area, however we are looking into this as an option during the Hadrians Cavalry exhibition this summer.
