Informative staff
Sep 2021
The house and gardens are interesting and enjoyable but we found the highlight of our visit was the friendly and informative staff. We even got a private tour round the gardens by the gardener who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her work.

Cherryburn is the home of Thomas Bewick the famous naturalis and engraver. The house is quite small with only a few rooms but provides a fascinating insight into his skills as an engraver, printer and naturalist. Across the courtyard from the main house is the the building where he was born and grew up. The whole family lived in a couple of small basic rooms.

The highlight of the visit was the print room

A small NT property but worth a visit for the print room alone although the donkeys - especially the baby one - are cute.

Thomas Berwick's home

Not a lot to see at this small off the track house.
Nice welcome and details provided of the limited amount to see in the two rooms of this engravers cottage. Weather was poor so not easy to explore outside.
Short video in the print room is helpful.
Would not have been impressed if we had had to pay admission so glad we are NT members.

Very Disappointed

Visited while staying in Newcastle so didn't travel very far which was the only plus point.
Two rooms only to visit in the main the building and one other in an outbuilding.
Visit over within the hour, couldn't find bees or see alpacs as outside overgrown and partly closed. Staff very friendly.

Nice sunny day and such a surprise after travelling through a residential area to come into such peace and tranquillity. Exhibitions excellent (not sure about the talking birds though) with several wood blocks on display. Such an enthusiastic young lady who obviously loves the place. Small café but very reasonable and lots of seating all over the grounds - ideal for a picnic. Well worth a visit.

We really enjoyed visiting this little house and learning about Thomas Bewick. We had no idea who he was but he's now a legend in our books. Very interesting learning about how he made the illustrations and the bird art installation was pretty neat. The staff were brilliant and incredibly welcoming. Kids had fun with the activities provided and we even got to see the alpacas being shorn. It would be great to have all his bird and animal illustrations for sale, I'd have loved a platypus to put in a frame at home, had to make do with a dotterel! 🙂
