We booked the two day “learn to lead” course with Al a couple of weeks ago, and he managed to fit us in at really short notice to suit our availability. We’re a couple of boulderers, with a bit of sports climbing experience, who wanted to learn how to trad climb so that we could explore more of what the Peak District has to offer.
Our instructor for the two days was Daryl, who was very friendly and had an excellent knowledge of the area. He already had a good plan of where to take us to teach us the basics, with a load more ideas in mind depending on the weather and our progress.
Over the two days he taught us everything we needed to know to go out trad climbing by ourselves - Route picking and assessment, gear selection and placement, building of belay anchors, top and bottom belay techniques, abseiling techniques, as well as improving our climbing by encouraging more planning and self reflection. Plus lots of other little tips and bits of information that would have taken ages for us to learn by ourselves.
Overall we had a brilliant two days, and since then we’ve been back out at every opportunity to put the new skills to use. We’re both now confidently leading easy trad routes, and looking forward to practicing what we’ve learned so we can book a multi-pitch course next year!
We highly recommend this course, just two days of instruction has safely opened up a whole new world to us.

What an amazing day. Al was fab with my 9 year old son, patient, encouraging, coaching him up the climbing routes. My son was chuffed to bits to get up several climbs and then spent 2 hours doing repeat abseils down a 20 metre bridge!
Throughout, Al was an absolute professional. Highly recommend Gritstone Adventure Activities for families, they were able to tailor the day to our skill levels but made sure we all felt a sense of achievement. So much so, we’ve booked again for a couple of weeks time!

I first booked a climbing day with Al for my grandson’s 13th birthday in 2019.
When I spoke with him later he described the day with lots of enthusiasm as he talked about the various routes on the gritstone edges Al had got him to attempt with only one beyond his then capabilities. He was very enthusiastic about guidance given and felt very secure under Al’s instructions.
Then Covid lockdowns intervened so the next opportunity to repeat the experience was ths year with Harry’s 15th birthday. I thought it best to let Harry to give his own comments below…
“This climbing experience leaves you with a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.
Al is a reassuring and kind instructor, not too strict, and is very compatible with people of varying levels of expertise.
On the day you get to go up as many routes as you can, at your own speed, and Al uses his knowledge to further enhance this by taking you to multiple different climbing spots all within a general area.
Not only is it a fun activity but also an opportunity to learn. Al teaches you many climbing related things such as tying knots and fixing gears.
This year I did 10 routes (even with a lunch break in the middle) and would have done more if it had not been cut short by an hour by threatening stormy weather. Al took me to two different spots and even accounted for the weather by taking me to somewhere that was largely shady so that I wouldn’t get too hot.
On top of this Al looks beyond just the day out and suggests ideas to improve your climbing abilities in general. To me he suggested a great place that is near where I lived that was relatively hassle free and would allow me to practice the techniques I had been taught. These included how to jam your feet into cracks for footholds and putting more trust in them.
Overall really pleasurable and is great to do more than once. Would highly recommend for most.”

Alan was super helpful, we told him we wanted some adventure and we had 3 young children, although we had a lack of climbing experience, they tailored a day to suit all of us. We were took weasling, which we all loved, especially our youngest two. (3&6 years)
After lunch we got suited up and explored a fairly short caving expedition. It was so much fun!
We felt safe the entire trip, and learned so much about the Peak District from our guide Chris, who was super friendly, knowledgeable, and had a lot of experience working with children. Which showed.
We decided on day two to do an abseiling trip, just for an afternoon,
This time the youngest watched but our ten year old had such a good time abseiling off a bridge at miller’s dale. My wife and I had a couple of goes too!! These trips gave our kids a great insight into adventure sports!
Big thanks to Chris! And all the team!

It’s no surprise to see the high rating here. Alan was excellent, very professional with a keen attention to safety. He remained proactively involved throughout the day, paying attention to our progress and giving feedback. Friendly and fun fella, too. Highly recommend x

Another great climbing course organised by Al at Gritstone (third one!), this time the Learn to Lead course. We were a group of four so were split between two instructors, Hannes (who we've been on a course with before) and Simon. Both proved to be amazing instructors and made the most of our first day at Stanage Edge knowing that the Sunday would be difficult due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. On the Sunday we suggested that we would get more out of a day at Awesome Walls in Sheffield away from the awful weather and they were able to put together a session looking at movement techniques, rope work, techniques for belaying a lead climber, etc, that was equally amazing. I came away almost glad the weather changed our plans as we were able to learn so much indoors. I cannot recommend Gritstone highly enough and we will be back again in the spring for the multi pitch climbing course.

Had a great day climbing with my family at Stanage Edge. Al is a fantastic instructor knowing when to show patience and when to challenge people. We all progressed far quicker than we expected, all thanks to Al's expert knowledge, advice and encouragement. This is the second year in a row we have booked with Gritstone Adventures (we went caving last time) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

First time Weaseling and Caving, guided by the fantastic Chris. What a brilliant day! Our 3 girls, 7,7 and 10 plus two grown ups had such a great experience. Chris inspired complete confidence and I was surprised at what they ended up doing: squeezing through some tight holes, abseiling and scrambling. I was a bit nervous about how the kids would be underground, but Chris put them at ease and didn't make anyone do anything they weren't wanting to do. They ended up going in 256m (and about 100m deep) to Garlands Pot in the Giants Hole. An added bonus was the wealth of knowledge that Chris brought to the activity. We learnt about the geology and history of the cave and the Gritstone areas we were at. I'd definitely use Gritstone Adventure activities again, and I'd ask for Chris.

My husband and I had a blast with Al today. He prepped us well; bring extra dry clothing and FOOD! Full day of caving in two different areas. Extremely knowledgeable about the area and history but also is great at establishing his groups level of ability and supporting them.
Amazing fun day.

We had a great day (and an extra half - booked after the first day) with Chris Clayton where he introduced us to Weaselling, Caving and Abseiling.
Chris was fantastic with the children (and us). He was informative, fun & patient and allowed the children to take the lead with the weaselling when is was safe to do so. He had us all working as a team and it was great that he enabled us to do challenging activities as a family and varying to suit the range of ages (our youngest is nearly 4).
The Weaselling was a great activity for families with young children. They loved the freedom & excitement of climbing under, over & between the boulders.
Due to covid we had to do this as a family bubble. I think it would have been cheaper if we could mix with other families but I know it will turn out to be the highlight of the week in the peaks and at least we weren’t holding others back with our very young group.
Thanks to Al and Chris for enabling us to do this. We are already planning to return.
