The Bodleian Library is a working library which forms part of the University of Oxford. It is housed in a remarkable group of buildings which forms the historic heart of the University, and you can explore the quadrangles of these magnificent structures at no charge. Different ticket options allow you to visit the interior of some of the buildings, such as the University’s oldest teaching and examination room, The Divinity School (built 1427-88). Here you will discover more of the University’s fascinating history. Our guided tours go behind the scenes in the Library, including its oldest research library, dating from 1602-20.

Tremendously historic, even awe-inspiring, to tour the premises where one of the greatest libraries in the world began. Some of the greatest treasures of the Bodleian, including illuminated manuscripts, a Gutenberg Bible, and a Bay Psalm Book, can be found on exhibit in the nearby Weston Library. A highlight of our trip to Oxford.

The Bodleian library only run 2 tours per day (10 people per tour) for the extended tour - which takes visitors through the reading rooms and the Camera as well as the original parts of the library. You have to move silently through the reading rooms, and even so, we were glared at by a reader, who obviously did not... More

Rome has the Sistine, Oxford has one of the finest libraries of the World. Its central position (unlike the ghastly UCL in Cambridge) accords this pantheon of learning its rightful place

This tour is worth taking. You visit the room pictured (which is where the infirmary is filmed in the Harry Potter movies) and then you go to the Library itself, which houses old books and manuscripts in beautiful old spaces. To hear the stories of Oxford's libraries is remarkable. To hear how they take care of the books and the... More

The guided tour of the Bodleian was by far my favorite experience during our entire trip to England. The guide was an expert, and they use a microphone system with personal earphones since it is a library and you have to be quiet. This made for one of the best tours I've had as I could adjust volume and not... More

Took the 60min guided tour - booked in advance- and it was excellent. The guide was informative and the sights amazing. Not sure who this Harry Potter chap was that got a few mentions.

These a few layers to the Bodleian Library that you must uncover. First, book the guided tour and plan ahead - they sell out fast as they can only take a finite number of people into the library at any time. The history of the place is remarkable and important to book culture in general. Second, really relish in the... More

I had a fantastic time on this tour last week. The building itself has so much history that is significant to the history of the UK that I had never learned about before, despite coming from the UK! Definitely a mist while in Oxford. The only sad thing was that there is no photography allowed upstairs in the library. Such... More

An excellent tour guide let us in on the history of the very beginning of the modern library. You can really relive the wings of history here.

We opted for the half-hour mini tour which was a great introduction to the Bodleian. Our guide was very engaging and eloquent as she told us the history and facts about the Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s medieval library.
