What a disappointment. We walked from iffley village along the thames riverside and frankly even with my partner and a dog i still did not feel safe. People on bikes and runners came from all directions, i had to hold my bag tightly and jump out of the way. The boats mored up looked abandoned. Excessive rubbish from the people on said boats just tossed into the hedges or abandoned on the towpath. As for the foliage it needed a lot of TLC. I certainly would not go alone or in the dark.

My boyfriend and I went out for a lovely walk in the sunshine and on the spot, decided to have a drink in the garden of this pub. I went to order one glass of wine and one orange and lemonade. Before ordering, I thought I better just check that I could pay by card and asked politely. The bar tender said yes if its over £10 and he said if I bought two drinks, that would take it to £10. I wasn’t sure if he was joking because that sounded a little steep for a village pub which, being completely honest, did not appear to be anything special. He then started saying strange things like ‘What do you expect, this is The Prince of Wales Ma’ Darlin. Two drinks here will cost you £10'. I swear, I thought he was pulling my leg. So I asked him how much a glass of wine would cost and he told me £6.70. Again, I thought he was joking. £6.70 in a run of the mill village pub in the outskirts of Oxford – I just couldn’t see the justification for this price. I would at least expect the service to live up to the price tag anyway! When he saw I was taken a-back, he suggested I go to Wetherspoons and that it was people like me who were responsible for 26 pubs a week closing. I truly do not know what I did to deserve this. The issue of local pubs closing is something close to my heart so I took offence to this and I did not agree with his conclusion. Again he reminded me that ‘This was the Prince of Wales’ and that it was a ‘Five star pub’. Bravely, I said that I didn’t care what type of pub it was and said I would rather leave. To that he told me to ‘go to wetherspoons’.
I don’t know if he was just having a very bad day but I feel strongly that it is totally unacceptable for anyone to speak so badly to a customer, particularly where it’s uncalled for. I will never return to this pub and I would be worried about anyone I know or anyone on here going which is the sole reason for taking the effort to register and post this comment.

It is a shame that the landlords have forgotten that a village pub is normally a hub for the locals to meet in. When I was last there, all the friendly faces that encouraged me to use the pub have since gone, and have moved up to the Tree Hotel just up the road, where the beer is much cheaper, (very expensive in the Prince) and the bar staff have welcomed them, rather than shoved them out because they are no longer part of the rather greedy and pushy image that the Prince is trying to portray. All they want to do is put bums on seats for the food, which isn't that special anyhow.
I took a friend there a couple of weeks ago, and commented on the extortionate beer prices, only to be told by Peter that if I did not like it, find somewhere else to drink. Hence my move to the Tree along with at least 20 to 30 other old customers.
These people forget the locals were there before they were, and will still be in the village when they have moved on.
Lona & Peter need to look at the overall picture.

We have lived in the area for nearly two years and as it is in walking distance, have been to this pub around twice a month. We really liked the cosy Oxford country feel with a roaring fire in winter and a nice garden in the summer. We have recommended the food and the pub to friends and family.
In the last two weeks, we have attended twice once for lunch and once for dinner and since the renovation, it has lost it's charm and warmth. The landlord still doesn't act like he recognises us (I know we are not technically locals, but we do visit quite often) The food for lunch last Saturday was at best average and the service very slow, despite the pub being fairly empty.
Last night we arrived quite hungry and ready to eat. I asked for a glass of Rioja at the bar and when the barmaid did not know what this was, the landlord yelled from behind that it was only sold by the bottle, so we ordered a bottle, which was handed to us still with the lid on.
We had be used to table service whilst eating, but after waiting for 20 minutes and watching people who had arrived after us have their orders taken, my husband ordered at the bar. we then waited 45 minutes for our food The scampy used to be served on a plate with a generous salad and was very tasty, it is now shoved into a bowl with the chips and was fairly soggy and not hugely warm. The lady at the table next to us sent her chips back as they were cold. The plates were also delivered by a girl who was around 8/9 years old. I am not sure this is appropriate!
The final straw was desert, we ordered the chocolate fondant (which have eaten before) The menu states that this will take 10 minutes to cooks and we were happy to wait. However, I kept an eye on the time and it actually took 25 minutes. It arrived at the table overcooked on the outside and undercooked in the centre. The pistachio ice cream served on the side tasted like washing up liquid. I left most of it. When the 8 year old girl arrived to take the plates with the waitress there was no comment made about the uneaten desert.
I am very disappointed that this once convenient and lovely pub has perhaps expanded too quickly. We shall be travelling a bit further afield for a meal out from now on.

This is not to be confused with the hotel of the same name, this is available to rent through Landmark Trust. We stayed here for 3 nights using it as a base for visiting Oxford. The building is old and historical, self catering but with good local facilities (The Swan Inn) is a 5 minute walk. The River Thames runs past the bottom of the lawned garden and we walked 1.5 miles into Oxford along the towpath crossing the river at Iffley Lock. Iffley is a village within a city (Oxford) which is unusual but well worth visiting.

Stumbled across this pub today and pulled in for late lunch. Firstly, the welcome was so friendly and warm, it felt as we had been there many times before and we were old friends! Secondly, we took our dog who was given water and a cuddle and thirdly the food was simple and scrummy! Coffee was served by Pete the Landlord, who again was super friendly and very welcoming. Although we live in Windsor, we will make a definite detour to go back! Highly reccomend it!

The Prinse Of Wales pub have the best food we have ever tried in a British Pub. We are two couples visiting Oxford area for a long weekend, staying in Iffley village. We ended up at the Prince Of Wales after a beautiful walk along the river Thames.
The people working in the pub were very serviceminded and friendly. The atmosphere was great and the interior was very nice. We had differnet dishes and we all made comments about the food.
Will come back for another meal..

I had been to this pub years ago, it was a thriving bustling local back then.
Not any more though, it was nearly empty, I was wondering why when I noticed the prices, astronomical! Times are tough at the moment and people are looking after their pennies, coming here is not going to help that. The food was OK but nothing special and the drinks were hugely expensive. My advice, find somewhere else cheaper, it won't be difficult

There should be an existing entry for this spectacular Romanesque church. I lived in Oxford on two separate occasions while conducting academic research. Fortunately, student of mine who had been a Rhodes scholar at Oxford told me of this remarkable church. It is open most days. The deadly carved dog tooth arches alone would justify a trip. There is a special feature of this church that is not too be missed. Virtually all churches of this age do not display sharp relief in their stone carvings. This church has a modest exception. It is the door off to the right hand side of the church as you face the main entrance at the front. Because a wooden shed had been built up against this doorway until the late 19th century the stone carving around this door was protected from the elements for most of its life. The result is that these carvings are sharper than any one would normally see at most churches.
Another feature of this church is the massive yew tree in the church yard. Yew trees were used to fashion the famous English long bow. Because of the strategic nature of this bow, it was ordered that yew trees be planted in many villages. This splendid very old tree dates way back to that era and now stands to provide only shade and beauty.

Went back here for a meal not really knowing it had changed hands the landlord seemed friendly but his wife the cook was horrid screeching at the staff like a witch! The good was horrid and the place was dead! Most of the locals have gone to the tree as the beers have gone substandard since the new owners have taken over, very gloomy and no atmosphere there whatsoever! I feel sorry for the staff there having to deal with customers expecting 5 star food and drink and getting 1 star if your lucky! Avoid this place!

the village sounds absolutely delightful - would there be an appropriate place, by the water perhaps, for a picnic gathering of six adult cousins and 4 octogenarian parents (one in a wheelchair)?
