Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really enjoyed the entire experience! It grew so much since the catweazle events I remember in Northgate hall roughly 20 years ago! Matt offers
the Same Wonderful fun loving friendly quality open stage event with a delightful artistic twist and a loving attentive audience ! So many wide opened curious eyes and ears it was delightful! Great stuff to express yourself safely within the local community! Handy to get feedback too and test new material on willing punters! Looking forward to the next evening I am available to attend there! Thank you great team!!:)

No two nights the same, the acts are often of a high standard and occasionally utterly unique.
Tonight was the typical mix of the bonkers, beautiful and breathtaking that I have come to expect.
If you are in Oxford for any length of time, then you should come to this at least once.

Back in 1996, as a twenty-one year old backpacker from Australia with a guitar I could barely play, I decided to pluck up my courage, head down to the Catweazle Club that a friend had told me about, and - for the first time - sing and play guitar to one of my own songs, in front of an audience. What I remember was how extraordinarily kind, nurturing and encouraging Matt Sage was, and how at home I felt. It was the first of now many thousands of shows I have played, but you never forget your first time. I am so thrilled to see that this night has continued. I live back in Melbourne now, but I do dream about returning one day, just to connect back with that incredibly special feeling of community and comradeship that is so rare to come by. I feel so lucky to have stumbled into that experience. With love and thanks from the year 1996, Clare Bowditch (Australia) xo

Last time I was here we had haunting Lithuanian lyrics, C&W comedy songs, a capella blues covers, new tunes, old tunes, poems, a touring band drop by...

A typical evening at this most atypical of (acoustic) Open-Mics.

If you’re in Oxford and you’re not here, what are you doing that’s more uplifting?

Every Thursday night this little club appears as if by magic and transports a small, dedicated audience to a 1960s Greenwich Village style open mic. The mics are so open there are no actual microhphones, just a hushed, respectful crowd, and a cross generational set of performers. Each week is different but there is always some poetry in the air, as the hall fills with sea shanties, Laura Marling style folk, beat poetry and creative expression in all its shapes. This is the true essence of a local music scene hidden in the boho enclave of the Cowley Road, and well worth seeking out. Get there around 7.30 latest as it fills up quickly.

This is the most wonderful little venue, so supportive to all the performers, welcoming, friendly. Just go! Go to listen. Go to learn. Go to be entertained And please, go to perform, you will not regret it. My future trips to Oxford will be planned on Thursdays just so I can go back!

If you are looking for a break from the arcane and the tourists the Catweazle Club, which opens every Thursday night, 8pm to 12pm, is the place. This popular performance venue hosts a wide range of gifted poets, musicians, singers and storytellers whose works vary from folk, blues, jazz, humour, polemics and more.
It's an interesting scene and clearly attracts an interesting bunch or regulars. I went twice and would be there every week if I lived in Oxford.

I went with a couple of friends to provide a change from the usual open mic night we go to in Newbury. It has a pleasant bohemian vibe and exudes cosiness. Every performer gets to perform one piece, be it a song, a poem etc which may seem too little but there's quite a few slots on the night so at least it won't drag on. My only gripe is the entry free- £6. Just a little bit too steep in my opinion but performers get in free. I still highly recommend it as you're guaranteed to be entertained at their unpredictable shows.
