About
Oxford Castle & Prison explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed characters, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

Fergus the guide

Our guide Fergus did a great job. Didn’t rush the visit and gave us some interesting facts about the prision and castle.

Well done, we would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Oxford.

A must see in Oxford

Me and my boyfriend did this tour together, reasonably priced at just under £15 per person for an hours tour of the castle/prison.

Our guide Becca was full of knowledge which she recalled for the tour itself as well as additional facts she knew which wasn’t part of the tour when I asked her about other aspects of the history of the castle.

Very good tour where you can then explore the building for yourself after the formal part of the tour is over.

Also the views from Saint Georges Tower overlooking Oxford are amazing.

You can also be provided with the code to the gate to walk up the mound once you have finished the tour, too.

Well worth a visit

Although there isn't much of the castle left there is still a good story to tell of it's history on the guided tour. When the tour is finished there are parts you can spend more time in on your own. The prison side of it was fascinating - still being used up to 1996. If you get a chance visit the Malmaison hotel next door and ask nicely if you can have a quick look in - it is amazing - the main part of the hotel is the original internal area of part of the prison and the rooms are converted cells.

Must see for history lovers

Tickets seemed a bit pricey, but the tour was excellent - just the right mixture of facts and social details of the story of the castle and prison from Anglosaxon times to the present day.

Fantastic guide, really interesting tour

Spending a day in Oxford we decided to go on this tour and were not disappointed. Sally took us through what the tour entailed and offered the option of a book too. Robin was our tour guide and was in turn amusing and knowledgeable. Be warned the 102 steps to the top of the tower, although taken in two stages is not for the faint hearted - it is very steep and I was very out of breath by the top, but it was well worth it for the views. The tour lasted well over an hour and at the end you are left to roam through the exhibits or revisit the crypt at your own leisure. For £14.95 per person I felt it was very good value and would recommend highly.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us this wonderful review! We're delighted to hear of your positive experience with Sally and Robin - and we agree that the steps up St. George's Tower are very steep (but echo your thoughts that the view is worth the climb!)

Interesting and enjoyable visit
Sep 2021
Our tour guide, Jordan, gave us a very interesting and entertaining talk throughout the tour. Learned many new facts about the history of the castle and prison and the people who 'stayed' there !
Beautiful views from the tower and the mound, which had just re-opened on the day we went.

Oxford Prison
Natalia was an excellent guide who made the visit very enjoyable. However I thought the tour rather fizzled out at the end when you were left to wander around on your own. It’s a shame that some sort access to the Hotel was not possible as it would seem a lot more features have been preserved. Definitely go as it is good but if you get a chance visit to a prison before it is commercially redeveloped.

Having been born in Oxford and returning to show my new husband around, I was surprised that I had never been inside this place before! We were extremely lucky to have Furgus as our tour guide. They were so knowledgable and funny, they made the experience really interactive and fun. The history was really well laid out and the tour well organised.
