Wonderful experience!
Jun 2021 • Family
Had a really lovely afternoon visiting the Small Worlds section of the museum with my 5 yr old son. Our host Shona was brilliant and kept the children in the group entranced with her story telling. We loved exploring all the different sections and being part of lots of different story worlds - it really brought some familiar stories to life and we learned about some new ones too. The session was just the right length and my son was delighted throughout! The staff have obviously worked really hard to make everything very covid safe and we felt completely comfortable, including in the cafe and shop. Well worth a visit!

Thank you so much for your feedback and we're delighted that you had a good time in Small Worlds - we've loved having visitors back on site and we'll be introducing more storytelling and craft activities over the summer so do come back soon!

This museum is large, quirky, and has studio space. Wear shoes with rubber soles for climbing steps.

The Galleries are amazing
Oct 2020
Due to Coronarestrictions and remodeling of the museum you now have to book different parts separately. I visited the Galleries (recommended for 5+) with my 4 and 7 year old and they absolutely loved it. The team has been very creative in this part to allow the children to explore without touching things with their hands. The audiotour through the whispering woods ensures that people keep moving - very clever to avoid larger groups of people building up. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Can't wait for the entire museum to re-open without Corona!

A belated thank you for your review. We were so sad that we had to close for the second lockdown in November but we'll be back open again from 12 December

A touch of magic
Aug 2020
Most of the Story Museum was closed when I went, but I did enjoy browsing round the shop and having a coffee in the courtyard cafe.

This is currently the best outdoor cafe in Oxford - a quiet, spacious and quirky space with a touch of magic.

I can't comment on the few children's activities that are currently availalable.

My story museum adventure
Mar 2020
When we arrived at the museum we were given a map of all of the places there were and we also got a story museum badge. When we were looking where to go first we ran into Isy (my mums friend who works there). When she showed us the first room I saw that it had a huge bed that you read stories on. There was another room with pictures of the book on the walls my sister (lily) really liked that room. Then we went to the cafe and ate some food. Then we went to the whispering woods where you whisper into a tree's ear and they tell you the story. After we went to the shop l got a story museum notebook and a rainbow slinky and my sister and brother (lily and Ali) got a gruffilo lunchbox, a train, 2 books and a tea set. I give it five stars out of 5. The only downside is that it's a big place so people could get lost easily if they aren't careful. I loved the story museum, it was awesome and I will tell all my friends and I will definitely come again.

Dear Bana B We are so thrilled to hear that you had a good time - particularly as we have had to postpone our reopening so you were one of the lucky few who got to see the magic inside. But don't worry we will be back - not sure when but our story doesn't end here. Love from The Story Museum

Thank you for the review - however I'm not sure you were reviewing The Story Museum in Oxford. We've been closed for 18 months - although our cafe has been open!! And the best news is that the whole Museum is reopening on 4 April 2020 with a newly revamped cafe and shop and 10 new gallery and activity spaces... so there'll lots of books, plenty of stories, bags of fun and a cafe for hungry grandchildren!

A lovely random find!
Aug 2019
We stumbled across the Story Museum while wandering around Oxford, and decided to investigate after my 4 year old was completely entranced by the phone box and special window outside in the street. A lovely man called James gave us a very warm welcome, and quickly had my daughter doing some colouring and sticking before giving both her and my baby son their very own reading of the Gruffalo. A quick dress up and sit on the throne and we were done - although it was a perfect amount of time to keep my daughter engaged. There were other activities that I think older children would enjoy, to do with writing your own stories. Hopefully we will be able to visit Oxford again in the future, once the renovation works are complete so we can see the rest of the Story Museum.

A bit meh
Aug 2019
I really want to like this - the concept is great and innovative. I've taken my children a couple of times and it's been quite good but overall it's a bit meh.
I am on the mailing list and I understand a revamp is underway so I am hopeful.

Yes there's plenty of very un-Meh excitement in store from Spring 2020! Currently we only have one room open - for free - so that our local visitors can still drop in and say hello and have a last play on the Talking Throne. From September it will just be our cafe that will be open with free drop-in story sessions. And then from Spring 2020 we'll have 10 new gallery and activity spaces including an Enchanted Library, a Whispering Wood, and Small Worlds specially designed for pre-schoolers (though we already know from our giant Bed that all ages are likely to enjoy it too!).

Day out with the Nephews
Jun 2018 • Family
This was a perfect day out with my nephews who absolutely love books. They especially loved the story throne where they could dress up and walk up to the throne where it announced their arrival. For young, early readers this is an ideal place. We then spent hours in rooms either reading stories or making up our own stories (as a teacher I loved the creativity it allows for families to make up their own activities). Very inspiring.

A unique day out
May 2018 • Family
My kids were a bit too young to really appreciate this venue. I would say from about 8 years upwards, once they have really started to enjoy reading and will know some of the books featured in the museum. We enjoyed a story reading session (the secret garden), which was set up in the corner. One of the staff read a story, and there was an activity afterwards to find things in the little garden they had set up. This was probably the part my children enjoyed most. We explored the rest of the museum, and I was really impressed with the thought and effort put into it from giant beds, to your own Narnia (through the wardrobe) experience. Adults will enjoy this as well.
The museum has a shop, and there are all sorted of interesting things for sale. Also, a cafe which I'll try and review separately but the main thing is they are gluten free friendly and the sandwich I had was amazing. The bread was so fresh and fluffy I wasn't sure it was gluten free BUT the chef had baked it. The cafe prices were reasonable. We will definitely be visiting again when my kids can appreciate the museum more.

We're really pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit last summer. Please note that the Museum galleries are currently closed for a very exciting redevelopment. Our cafe is still open but to visit Narnia and our giant bed you'll need to hold on until Spring 2020 when we reopen!
