About
Oxford Covered Market features more than 50 traders selling fresh produce, gifts, fashion, flowers and jewellery, and provides a unique showcase for the very best in local crafts, food and drink. We are proud that the majority of our businesses are independent and with some going back generations. Oxford Covered Market, which was designed by Magdalen Bridge architect John Gwynn, first opened as a market for meat, fish, vegetables and herbs on 1 November 1774. It was then enlarged several times, rebuilt and fully roofed over during the 19th century. Visitors can still see original iron roof supports, cast by Dewer Foundry in London in 1839; 1830s market fronts, complete with moulded cornice and pilasters; and iron bars projecting from shop fronts that date from the 19th century and were used to hang meat. The Covered Market, which was Grade II-listed in 2000, is a rarity because it has been in continual use as a market for almost 250 years.

- Chenoa STorrance, California140 contributionsFun little covered market!Always a lovely visit to the Covered Market. We always visit Ben's Cookies and it's always a treat. Taylors is also a favorite. This time it was decorated beautifully for Christmas and was so lovely. Will definitely visit again when in Oxford.Visited November 2022Written 18 December 2022
- Grover RPensacola, Florida18,030 contributionsFun VisitIf you are looking for a quick bite for energy, a coffee or dessert or a nice Oxford souvenir, this is a great market to visit. It is perfectly located between Christ Church College and many of the other landmark college buildings like the Radcliffe, Bodleian and Sheldonian. Its cover protects its visitors from the elements which was the cold the day we visited. Here we were introduced to Mulled Wine. We also were able to find souvenirs and a quick bite for energy. It was fun to visit.Visited December 2022Written 27 December 2022
- family25travellerForres, United Kingdom141 contributionsA wee bit of everything!!We went in here out of the rain, it was like an aladdins cave, there was loads of different wee businesses, I loved all the food places. That's my jam. There was cookies, chocolates, beers, cafes, fruit and veg, butchers, fishmongers, the cutest wee bags, noodles, just everything I like and we spent some time in there having a bloody good mooch, so I'd recommend this wee gemVisited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 March 2023
- Peter ASyracuse, New York9 contributionsMust stop shopping, browsing, and "experiencing" for visitors to Oxford. In the Internet age, the marketplace has shifted to bland, monopolistic, corporate conglomerates mainly focusing on pricing competition. The shopping Mall in the US has been on decline, and department stores in the UK are not too far behind, though seemingly in better health than ours as there is a greater proliferation. Case in point, even the centuries-old institution Boswell's Department Store in Oxford closed its doors a few years ago, ending one of those rare pleasures of the past of browsing for tangible items in a bricks and mortar setting. That being said, the Covered Market lives on, and not only is it a pleasant experience to wander around the unique shops with enticing wears, but it is important to support the small businesses that keep the world from becoming uniformly boring. One of my favorite shops here is located near the back called "Collector's Company" (130 The Covered Market). It's a bit of a blast from the past featuring all sorts of models, coins, and "Man Cave Stuff" that would delight many men. I was impressed with the offerings crammed into the small space, and despite being familiar with many "man cave type collectibles", found some unique items I did not know existed. I love how despite the world becoming more and more uniform, unitized, McDonaldized, etc., there still exists store like this and the other unique shops of the Covered Market that make visiting other places an enlighting and pleasant experience. Simple meals, fresh produce, and fashion are all available here to enjoy.Visited September 2022Written 14 May 2023
- CarloHelmondHelmond, The Netherlands616 contributionsNice place on a rainy dayWe visited Oxford on a rainy day and were early for a tour of the town center. Since we had time to kill, we dropped in. It kept us dry for a while. They do have some nice shops in the covered market. A nice place to kill some some or get something to drink and/or eat. On rainy days it does get a little busy around lunch time.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 July 2023

Plenty of top shops, cafes, etc. We visited The Market Tap by Tap Social for a beer & a bun - there was a large seating area adjoining it & it had a fab choice. - Jb-tbRotterdam, The Netherlands183 contributionsCrowded, but worth it.Despite the large number of tourists cramming into this relatively cramped space, the building has managed to retain its original historic appearance. Some shops are clearly aimed at mass tourism and attract many people looking for the perfect Instagram shot. At the same time though, there was a fantastic coffee shop with delicious cake. All in all, definitely worth a visit because of the unique atmosphere and some nice shops and catering establishments.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2023

Opened in November 1774 this was a historic market but today it was full of average traders focusing on the many tourists. Some were interesting but most were not.

Great market, but terrible toilets. Not one toilet would flush. Several were full of paper and poo. Toilet paper had run out and there were holes in the doors so people could see in. I've had better toilet experiences at festivals. Come on Oxford Council!

such a pretty little place, lots of cute shops and restaurants. it smells lovely walking through here!!
only issue i had was with the bathroom, it was supposed to be open on both days i went and they were shut, with no security around. the other toilets are quite a walk from here so this was unfortunate, other than that it’s a beautiful area definitely worth visiting!

Not what we expected from a market. We were disappointed with what the Oxford Covered Market had to offer.

Where is the best place to park for the covered market please ? With someone elderly who can’t walk too far
SimoninBS7
South West England, UK56 contributions
Hi Samantha, that's a tricky Q. as Oxford centre is highly pedestrianised. The official advice for visitors is to use the park & ride car parks and get a bus into the centre, but that doesn't really help folk who find it difficult to walk. The best advice I can think of is perhaps get an Uber cab (or any other type of cab, come to that!) to a nearby street - Turl Street, perhaps?
Access from the High is def. pedestrian only...
Sorry for delay in answering - I don't view Tripadvisor that often - Merry Christmas!

When I was at the market in 2017, I found a trader who sold purses that are handcrafted to look like houses and shops. I bought a little coin purse that looked like a quilt shop. The advert on the purse read: Little Sewing Company. Can you tell me how I can reach them. I am in the USA, but will be in the UK in December. Thank you, Katherine Treece

Hi, do you remember the store where you did buy the purse?
If you do maybe you can email them and ask about the Little Sewing Company.
But if you do not remember the store then Google the name of the market then search the store in the Photo Gallery of the market and ask them.
Is it open during weekends ? Which hours?
Hi,
We are open from 8am - 5.30pm Monday - Saturday and 10am - 4pm Sundays. We are also open bank holidays which are Sunday hours.
Hope you visit sometime soon!!
