- helsy12004North Wales, United Kingdom14 contributionsAn oasis from city lifeI visited the Winter Gardens on several occasions during my 2 night stay in Sheffield. The Winter Gardens offer an oasis away from bustling city life. With lots of tropical trees and plants to admire, we met up with friends and enjoyed a hot drink and a mouch around. Definitely worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 October 2023
- Terry KaneStockport, United Kingdom4 contributionsLovely gardens, will be visiting again.Absolutely lovely place! Went in june for my daughters birthday and saw the Arctic Monkeys ‘AM’ elephant - she’s a massive fan. (Do recommend coming if you like the band!!)The gardens were lovely & clean. Wasn’t busy when we were there. Will be coming again.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 December 2023
- Jacco Van WingerdenHendrik-Ido-Ambacht, The Netherlands204 contributionsLovely green and spacious hide-out in downtown Sheffield.Beautiful and surprising venue in downtown Sheffield. Great architecture and definitely worth a visit. On our visit there was a a lot of activity due to the snooker championship, but since that was the reason for our visit we didn’t find that a problem.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 April 2024
- SergioR1Eastbourne, United Kingdom877 contributionsIconic winter garden in the city centreIconic free winter garden in the city centre. One of the successful stories of urban regeneration. Free oasis to relax, have lunch and enjoy the scenery. At the time part of the building was taken over by the BBC coverage of the World snooker championship. The wooden structure probably needs varnishing and maintenance but still impressive. Beautiful big tropical plants and trees.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024

Sat here for a while watching world go by amidst all the foliage listening to a dj playing Caribbean tunes, spent quite a while reading the really interesting stories of the West indians that came to make their homes. - therichastillStevenage, United Kingdom3,466 contributionsAn Oasis of CalmSheffield Winter Garden is a lovely place to go and sit and relax. It is a short walk from the Peace Gardens is the Millennium Gallery is just off the Winter Gardens which is well worth a visit. The Winter Garden is effectively a massive greenhouse and there are lots of tropical plants there including palms and cacti. There are lots of benches to sit on so you can stop and watch the world go by and enjoy the exotic nature that is not native to South Yorkshire.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 August 2024

We were walking through Sheffield and had been told of the Winter Gardens. We found the Peace Gardens amongst some fabulous old stone buildings. The Winter Gardens was hidden down a side street behind a very modern glass facade. Inside we found paved paths through flower beds planted with tropical plants, trees and models of animals. It isn't large but it is covered and so on a wet cold day it offered some respite from the weather.

This is a tiny gem in the middle of the city. It is packed full of lovely tropical and semi-tropical well-established plants. There is a little cafe with reasonable prices that you can sit at to enjoy the tranquil environment. It is really only a ten minute visit without the cafe visit but still worth it!

I love Christmas shopping in Sheffield but it’s so nice to pop into the winter gardens and take time out. In December the gardens felt so warm and inviting. The tropical plants are so impressive and the smell of flowers is intensified under the fabulous glass roof. You must visit and take time to enjoy.

We always enjoy spending time in the multi award winning Winter Garden which is the largest urban glasshouse in Europe. Apart from the great variety of tropical plants and trees, the construction is an achievement in itself and worthy of appreciation. Spanning a space 230 ft by 72 ft (70 by 22 metres) its frame is formed from twenty-one parabolic arches of laminated strips of untreated larch, which are gradually weathering to a silvery grey, and a curved glass roof to capture as much light and sunshine as possible.

We were tourists and from the write up it sounded as though this was a huge greenhouse. To be fair you would walk through it in a few minutes, but it's worth a diversion as it's very close to the centre of the city. Beautiful palms and ferns with some orchids and cacti. A calm place to sit and eat your sandwiches which is what the locals seemed to be doing.

Was surprised that the Winter Gardens were open when I visited to see the CRUCIBLE. So went in after asking the staff member on duty if it was OK. Spent about 30 minutes inside looking at the various displays of palms and exotic trees. Surprised how tall they were. Unfortunately the eateries and cafes were all shut. Took a few photos while there.

Nothing special. Nice to sit and have a cup of coffee in or a picnic but it wouldn't be somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit.
It's not that big either. You can walk around it in about 10 mins and parking can be expensive in the city centre.

Sheffield Winter Garden is free to visit glass house adjacent to millennium gallery. The structure itself though not grand in size but is quite attractive from out and in. There are quite a few types of plants on display here along with benches to sit and reflect. The overall vibes of this garden are serenity and peace. This is a great attraction for locals to go for relaxation or have coffee in the garden cafe. For someone on a short tour, its worth visit if you are around the area or visiting millennium square and gallery. Otherwise, nothing much for a special detour.

I went on a trip to Sheffield with my mother, and this was one of the first places we decided to go and visit. The pictures make it look a lot larger and a lot more interesting than it actually was. We were both quite disappointed with what it was actually like

How many times did you visit before concluding that the place is popular with the homeless? Having been through here many times, that's a very strange conclusion to come to about the winter gardens.
Does anybody else share the same experience?

Even if there were some homeless looking for shelter in this horrendous weather what’s happened to a bit better of compassion. I’ve never seen homeless in The Winter Gardens but believe it would be an excellent use for a fairly useless place

Hi all Sheffield lovers, we are going for the first time next May (4 nights) and are wondering if we should hire a car to go sightseeing in the region, or is everything just easily accessible within the town?
Written 11 October 2017
You can walk around the city centre but there are other attractions a little way out from the city centre, Ecclesall Road area for instance. Lots of places to eat and drink there. Kelham Island area also worth a visit. Easy to get a taxi or bus Instead of car hire because parking can be difficult in places.
