Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great pub has been absolutely wrecked by shocking refurb. Imagine giving an 8 year old free reign to design a pub. It’s childish. Graffiti on the wall, things like “you’re sexy” on the chimney breast. Lads mags on the wall of the toilets. This had a great mixed clientele and was one of the best pubs in sheffield. Now looks like it’s been designed for teenagers. I walked in Saturday night and was that shocked and disappointed I walked back out without getting a drink. Go back to being a pub not a youth club.

Was the best pub in the area pre the refurb. Not that the pub didnt want a bit of cash spending on it ( toilets, and smell of damp when you walked in) . Whoever designed this needs to give thereselfs a good sheck.
Now the pub has turned into another souless bar to try and 'keep up' with the other tat on eccy rd. Well done Dirty Habbit wait till all the students go home and your sat with an empty bar..

We've been past this pub quite a few times but have never felt tempted in. From the outside it doesn't look that inviting. We had some free time in the area and decided to pop in- we were very impressed.
The pub was busy and buzzy but there were still some decent seats left, the bloke behind the bar was friendly and we were excited to finally try Bradfield Belgian Blue for the first time (local seasonal beer- it only just came out for this year)- it was absolutely delicious.

Dropped in for a quick drink with my son 16, Daughter 19 and her boyfriend 21. My daughter was ID'd straight by an older woman who I can only assume was the manager, to be expected I suppose. However, she then asked my daughter's boyfriend to remove his baseball cap then interrogated me about my son. How old is he ? What will he be drinking etc... ? While ordering him a diet coke she went on to say that he could stay in the pub (oh thanks!) but he must not be left unattended and must be escorted if he goes to the toilet. When I asked if I had to hold his weener while he was in the toilet she didnt reply. What is ironic is that even though he is 16 he works in a pub at home behind the bar so if fully aware of the under 18 rules and regs. Place was nothing special and I won't be going again.

Lets put it this way, we are all guilty of stereotyping but the landlady of this pub needs a lesson in manners. Yes I am from Barnsley but we were stereotyped as roughiens and were told to go and be Barnsley elsewhere. None of us were causing trouble, maybe a little loud and I personally was on pop as driving. Very very rude and have to say I will not be visiting again. Now I know why the Professor I work for prefers to actually work in Barnsley. Would not recommend.

Well what a place! Everything one would want from a pub. It's comfortable; warm with a real buzz about it of a chilly winter evening. It's homely; polite and chatty staff who are happy to tell you about anything from the beer to their weekend. Speaking of the beer! It has a comprehensive selection of drinks from cask ales to lagers, wines to spirits. I recommend the Farmer's Blonde or Farmer's Bitter, both are fresh out of a nearby brewery. Quickly becoming my favourite spot in Sheff, big up youserlves!!

I've been coming to The Porter Cottage since the late 80's and its never changed much in all that time. Sure the decor has changed a few times but it's always been a proper traditional pub serving the best Ales, Lagers & Stouts. You really can't beat the jukebox here too (unless your only into recent chart music in which case I doubt you'd agree) as its full of an eclectic mix to cover pretty much any taste. Its great for conversation too. Its location on Sharrow Vale Road is just behind Ecclesall Rd. and although this means it's out of view from the main road it doesn't matter as everyone knows where the Porter Cottage is and it is literally 2 mins walk from Ecclesall Rd (and that's how long it takes me and I don't walk too well!)
Basically to sum up, if you like proper pubs with a good range of well kept beers, great tunes and somewhere conducive to conversation then you simply must try it.

This pub has been a staple of my nights at the pub if I am staying around Ecclesall road, down sharrowvale road and opposite the Lescar Hotel, it seems rather unassuming but what it does, it does fantastically.
First thing you notice when you go regularly is the friendly staff and landlady who'll always greet you with a smile and recognise you even on the busiest nights. The drinks are always crisp and clean, the spirits and wine are of very high quality and the atmosphere in the pub is warm and welcoming.
The music is eclectic and very, very good.
The only fault I have with this place is how busy it gets on a weekend, but who can blame people for wanting to drink in one of the best pubs around!

Unwelcoming
If you are looking for Yorkshire hospitality look elsewhere ( lescar across the road is far better ) they are rude and unfriendly and so far up their own bums they may as well move in ( second shelf to the left please ) !
