What a wonderful few days! 4 of us embarked on a 3 day trip, which involved 2 days of cycling and one of canoeing on the River Wye! The cycling was suitably challenging for all levels of cyclist and the canoeing was a fun way to enjoy the delights of the River, with the draw of an ice cream in Hay.
The route was super-well planned by the organisers Kay and Chris, they were great with their contact at all stages of the process from inception to completion. The added bonus was an easy-to-use booklet with the stages of the route, which allowed us to easily navigate the course, stay off the main roads and see some wonderful sites along the way. It also had some fabulous suggested stops for coffee, beer, snacks and bigger meals.
The accommodation was excellent, the Lion Hotel was great, despite it being the hottest day of the year. The Mellington House in Weobley was an absolutely awesome place to stay, the rooms were really quiet, homely and the hosts were super, with breakfasts that were yummy from the butchers across the road.
I would highly recommend the trip that we did, which was 50km on the first day, 35km on the 2nd and then 9km canoeing. It was also very good value and if you don't use your own bikes, the one's that they use are suitable for the challenge. You definitely don't want to try the route with a road bike though!
Thanks once again to Kay and Chris, we highly recommend the experience!

We completely agree with you (well, we would, wouldn't we) our Cycling and Canoeing holiday is just a great way to explore Herefordshire and the Welsh borders. on extremely quiet country lanes. But the icing on the cake is the places you stay; we have worked with The Lion Hotel and Mellington house for many years - they just provide a perfect welcome to our guests. Thanks for taking the time to post the review and hope to see you again for another cycle adventure

We booked the Country Hotels cycle tour for 2020 but postponed (because of lockdown) until July 2021, even though Kay offered to refund our deposit . We were so impressed by the kind and friendly service that Kay and Chris gave us from the word go. Our electric bikes looked brand new and the itineraries/directions never missed a beat. We cycled mainly on country lanes, through the most spectacular countryside I've seen in the UK. The two hotels were perfect, comfortable places to stay after an enjoyable but energetic day on the road and the food in both places was excellent. We agreed that we couldn't have had better service or better routes suggested, in order to see the best of the Shropshire countryside. 5 stars and we'd go back in a heartbeat (and have already recommended it to family and friends).

What a lovely review - and we couldn't agree more about the spectacular countryside in the English /Welsh borders. It is well off the beaten track... but still home to some outstanding hotels and inns...everything you need for a great holiday. Look forward to seeing you again.

After Covid made our long-planned holiday to France impossible, Kay kindly put together a cycling holiday at the last minute. We combined the Herefordshire Gardens and Shropshire Country Hotels tours back to back, making a 10 day cycling trip that covered about 190 miles of the border country between England and Wales. The area was completely new to both of us, and what a glorious find it turned out to be! The hotels chosen by Kay were outstanding in their quality, and a special mention must be made for Stuart and his team at the Salutation Arms in Weobley, who gave us the best (huge) room in the (centuries old) house, and fed us like royalty. The friendly chat and food at The Lion in Leintwardine was also outstanding in these difficult times for hospitality.
We were blessed with beautiful weather for all but the last couple of days, but even that couldn’t detract from the incredible beauty of this relatively un-touristed part of the UK. Chris and Kay did a great job on this last-minute booking, and it was a pleasure meeting you both. We loved every minute of our 10 days (ok, maybe not the hills so much...!), and this genuinely goes down as one of our best ever holidays. We’d happily come back for more.

My 20 year old son and I just completed a 5 day self-guided tour with Wheely Wonderful.
The trip was excellent with a very high standard of accommodation, faultless organisation and excellent preparation and instructions for the route.
We were one of their first tours following the lockdown and they were fully prepared with very good anti-Covid precautions.
Chris and Kay are also extremely friendly and helpful.
I fully recommend them and will be using them again.

We enjoyed absolutely everything about our 4 day break cycling break in and around the valley of the River Teme (even the hills)! The organisation from Chris and Kay was faultless. The accommodation, service and food at the Baron and Castle Hotel was excellent and all the arrangements made for Covid made us feel safe. We were impressed at how friendly all the staff were at the hotels! The scenery on the rides was lovely and red Kites, buzzards, cows and sheep numerous. I also highly recommend the Kerry Vale Vineyard wine tasting tour :)
We will definitely be back to do another of Wheely Wonderful's tours.

My wife and I went on the Herefordshire Gardens circuit in July. There was an initial hiccup with the accommodation on the first night but that was quickly rectified by Kay & Chris. The cycling stages were organised to suit our capabilities and we really enjoyed using the bike as a means of getting somewhere we wanted to go rather than just clocking up the miles. The accommodation was first class, especially so at Mellington House, and there was a secure lockup for our bike at each location. The weather was kind and the views were wonderful.

Love the photo... just goes to show that the gardens you pass by in the tiny villages on this route are just as good as the showpiece gardens of Hergest Croft, Brobury house, Westonbury Water gardens and Croft Castle. It was lovely to meet you and your wonderful tandem. Many thanks for posting this review.

Chris and Kay were very welcoming when we first arrived, and took us through the bike set-up and explained the extensive route assistance material, all of which gave us a very good feel at the beginning of our 6 day Shropshire Castles tour. The itinerary that they had created was excellent, as was the accommodation they had organized. Wonderful views of the Shropshire countryside and very interesting historic sites to visit. Kay and Chris were very responsive and came to our aid when we required some roadside assistance – a puncture which wouldn’t seem to fix. Please note that if we’d had more faith in their assurances that the Slime sealant in the tyres really does work, and we’d followed the instructions precisely, we probably wouldn’t have needed to call for assistance!
Thank you for a great cycle tour Kay and Chris.

Lovely photos and glad you enjoyed the tour. We are always happy to come ut to sort problems... but it can take us up to an hour to get to you... which is why we use "Slime " in our inner tubes. It seals punctures caused by thorns really well and can get you going again without having to wait for us. Ideal when you are cycling in sheep country!

Just returned from a 3 day cycling tour with my Daughter. Having had many holidays to worldwide destinations the Herefordshire/Wye valley area and the tour arranged so efficiently by Kay & Chris topped them all. Great communication and a very clear and simplistic booking process, followed by a truly relaxed holiday, great cycling routes, perfect accommodation and very easy to navigate directions. The scenery and villages we travelled through were stunning, plenty of variation in the route ensuring we always had access to refreshments and other necessary facilities when cycling for several hours. The directions provided were clear and detailed and provided a combination of riding challenges exactly as we expected. Options to extend/vary the route enabled us to vary our journey and explore this stunning area further. The bikes provided we’re very high quality and superbly maintained, comfortable and with appropriate gears and related safety features. With the reassurance of puncture repair/mechanical support being on-hand enabled us to ride freely and without any restrictions. The location, quality and standard of service at the accommodation were all superb. After a long day in the saddle we felt like we had arrived Home, made to feel very welcome and provided with everything required to immediately relax and recover. Hay on Wye and the surrounding area is truly exquisite, providing the most peaceful and relaxing experience. The entire experience from start to finish was incredible and has inspired me to prioritise further cycling holidays in the future. I will definitely be revisiting this area and Wheely Wonderful Cycling Holidays.

There not much for me to add to this - apart from many thanks for coming along.... and what great photos! And of course a big thank you for taking so much time and detail with your review. This area is one of England's hideaway spots; few cars, peace and quiet (apart from birdsong & sheep), but lots of quirky things to discover (especially in the border town of Hay on Wye).

We really enjoyed our recent ycle tour through Mid Wales (The 7 day Lon Las Cymru tour). The weather was good for the trip, and we really enjoyed the days spent rolling through charming little villages and down country lanes.
All accomadations provided were of a very high standard, and provided a welcome respite after a long day of cycling.
We found the cycling mostly moderate, with some sections being really challenging - mostly becasue we are more weekend, rather than daily cyclist, but all routes were doable - even if I did have to get off and walk up a few of the Hills.
A tip I would give is really take the time to plan your route and days using the given itineary and route plans. By that I mean think about where and when you might want to stop, and what you want to do when you do stop. We probably didn't do as good a job of that as we could, and may have missed a few of the additional sights as a result.
I also recomend using the OS maps app to keep trck of where you are on the route. There are a few turnings and spots were it could be easy to go the wrong way by accident.

Great to hear you had a wonderful time. The highlight of cycling through mid Wales and the english /welsh borders, is of course the amazing landscape and quiet country lanes. But there is lots of history and culture
to see too, often also of a quiet nature (no big theme parks here!); historic churches, ruined castles, celtic history, welsh language. Our detailed route notes give snippets of history and point out places to visit.. there is nothing like sitting down with a coffee and planning out your day with the route notes and OS maps. Hope you managed to visit Hay Castle, the Red Kite wildlife spectacle at Gigrin Farm, Rhayader and the atmospheric ruins at Abbeycwmhir. thanks for sharing your photos - they are lovely.

My sister and I did the Black and White villages tour last week and we loved everything about it. Luckily the weather was good which always helps in the UK. Nonetheless we found the organisation very good, with email questions etc punctually answered. The hosts are very friendly and helpful.
Having the route and instructions ahead is very useful and also a marked up OS map to take along on the ride.
I took my own electric bike and my sister hired a manual bike. It was good quality, the right size and had good tyres and brakes. We felt confident that help was on the end of a phone should we need it.
The cycle routes are excellent- mostly quiet rural safe lanes with lots to see, and tea shops galore. No need to rush to finish the ride but plenty of time to enjoy the variety, and no real hills to speak of (I live in the Pennines!)
The accommodation in Weobley is top notch - very spacious and clean, good beds and a superb breakfast selection. Weobley itself is a delightful village with its own little walking tour which is worth doing. The Salutation Inn was our choice for dinner both nights. A nice variety of meals and puds, and lovely staff.
A wheely good holiday!
