This tour was absolutely amazing. Martin had catered the sights to see for our family. We spent the first day in Wales - absolutely gorgeous and not to be missed. The medieval black and white church to the town of Llangollen to the aqueduct were fascinating. My husband and I had our children (ages 8, 12, 22, 23) on this tour and each one had a favorite! The mountains, rolling hills, lush green pastures with sheep and active farms were things we will never forget. We spent a second day in Shropshire visiting the Iron Bridge, Ludlow, and more. We simply do not have enough good things to say about our guides: Martin, Andy, and Nigel, and our drivers (both of whom had such unique perspectives on the history behind our tours). The guides were extremely knowledgeable and connected time periods and events to the actual tour. In addition to that, Martin had booked lunches on both days that were exquisite with scenic views that made the meals, experiences. Make sure you allow Shropshire tours to arrange your lunch! Martin and Nigel even helped us sort our train tickets for leaving from Shrewsbury the next day! We have made it to the city of London today, and although I’m excited to be here, my first statement after checking into the hotel was, “Oh, I’d so like to be back in Shrewsbury and awaiting a day around the area!” (The two youngest children agreed.😊). Shropshire Tours made Shrewsbury and the surrounding areas places that are embedded in our hearts. We enjoyed our time so much that we hated to say goodbye. WHAT A TRIP!!!

We had a wonderful day trip from Shrewsbury to Mt Snowdon, in Wales. Our driver and our tour guide were splendid! We had a nice drive in Wales, and they accommodated our last minute request to stop for a photo of an aqueduct. It was a memorable day.

We really appreciate your review and we thank you very much for it. Your company made our day very pleasant so we could enjoy it as well. You caught the weather at the right time and we are pleased that the views from Y Wyddfa were as spectacular as you hoped.

We booked two days of touring with Martin and Andy around Shrewsbury and adjacent countryside during early July this summer (2023). We could not have had more gracious, more knowledgeable, nor more responsive guidance.

We came with varying interests -- my wife to explore her family's roots and I to see the countryside that inspired A Shropshire Lad, both of us to tickle our shared modest familiarity with the Cadfael corpus -- and all of our wishes were addressed and more.

Martin recommended an inn to stay at overnight, and places for meals while touring and all were first rate … comfortable lodging in an upscale renovated inn, excellent food at restaurants with history and character.

A lot of driving in a comfortable car, and detailed narration about every rise and dip along the way, each church, each historical sight, every corner of Shropshire mentioned in the Cadfael oeuvres, and much more.

Shropshire is not in and of itself a must-see tourist sight...it's not Stonehenge or Westmninster Abbey...but it is filled with a millennium and more of English (and Welsh) history, and is a marvelous (and a beautiful) entryway into an understanding of the continuity of British history. Every footstep you take off the path is a footstep that has been trod, and often named and written or sung or storied about, many times since Arthur and Merlin were about, and before; the Romans were here, and the Celts and the Saxons; there were battles and wars and feuds and intrigues in this microcosmic area, and touring them with Martin and Andy makes you instinctively wish to echo Shakespeare, "This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England, this nurse, this teeming womb of royal kings...."

I cannot rate this tour company highly enough! Martin picked us up the day before from the station, unflappable despite the delays and cancellations, and delivered us to the hotel (which was one of his recommendations and ideally placed), and he and Andy picked us up the following day for a fascinating tour of Brother Cadfael countryside, which also included a trip to Ironbridge, a stop at Roman ruins and a drive through the grounds of Attingham park. Martin was a fount of knowledge about the locations from the Cadfael books but also about the local geology, history and geography. Andy drove safely and smoothly and both were good company. We felt that our wishes were taken into account: we saw some beautiful villages and old churches and were taken into countryside to make the most of the stunning views. It was a birthday treat for my mother and we have both found renewed interest in and love of the Cadfael books on our return now that we have seen their settings. Thank you Martin and Andy!

My husband and I booked one of their tours as part of our honeymoon trip to the UK. Martin was very helpful from day 1 of planning the trip. He listened and made suggestions for the best use of our time while we were in the area. A couple of times, before our trip took place, the National Rail announced strikes would be taking place, and each time, Martin notified me via e mail that this would affect other parts of our vacation. He went above and beyond to make our entire trip smoother, not just the day we took his tour. That day, by the way, was wonderful. Andy was an excellent driver, and Martin was a veritable encyclopedia on beautiful Shropshire County. Theu even squeezed in a couple of extra stops for things I asked to see at the last minute. If we ever get back there, we would take another tour with them in a heartbeat.

Martin & Andy were very helpful & accommodating in planning a full day tour to the places my sister and I wanted to see, Ironbridge, Bridgenorth and Blist's Hill, including lunch at a lovely pub, seeing the remains of the Roman city of Wroxeter on the return journey and even an impromptu drive through the grounds of Attingham Hall as rain was forecast for our planned trip the following day.
It would've been impossible to see so much in one day on public transport.
Andy was a safe & attentive driver, Martin a very informative and interesting guide and they were both good company.
A custom-made tour may seem a bit expensive but when you consider all the expenses, fuel, insurance, the services of a guide and chauffeur, a comfortable vehicle to and from the hotel, it was well worth the money

Fully worth the money!!! I'm a big fan-girl of Brother Cadfael so their three-day tour of Cadfael sites was 100% of what I was hoping for.

As I knew my Cadfael books well it was so satisfying to visit many of the locations mentioned in the books. The extensive remains at Haugmond Abbey were excellent for helping imagine a similar set-up at Shrewsbury Abbey.

An individualised tour allowed me to ask questions whenever I wanted more detail to elaborate Martin's extensive tour notes. His wide-ranging knowledge allowed him to answer all types of questions, about other periods of history and technological developments as well as everything associated with the Brother Cadfael books/movies.

They described how they tailor other tours to match other people's interests. I suggest anyone intending to tour with them gives Martin as much information as possible about your interests so you can get the very most from your tour.

Andy was the tour driver for the two days in Shropshire and the tour guide for the day walking around Shrewsbury. He too did an excellent job.

I appreciated being able to pay for the tour in instalments prior to my arrival.
I unreservedly recommend Shropshire Tours.

Martin and Andy are very knowledgeable and most friendly tour guides and we throughly enjoyed our two day Cadfael focused tour plus a few extras, which were a pleasant surprise. We had a very comfortable ride through the countryside and always felt safe. We highly recommend this private tour.

They also had suggestions of things to see in Shrewsbury, of which we were unaware of and we enjoyed.

I've never taken a tour like this before, where the tour guides were willing to customize the tour to cover whatever we were interested in, and where they helped us with non-tour elements of our trip. For instance, Martin provided us with advice on hotel options and volunteered info about an upcoming train strike to make sure we weren't going to be stranded. He and Andy were even willing to pick us up in Shrewsbury and drop us in Birmingham so we wouldn't have to rent a car. We really enjoyed learning about Shropshire and its history, current issues, and even the intricacies of the English football leagues from Martin and Andy. I don't think there was ever a question we asked that they didn't have an answer for. Martin's prior experience working for the town of Shrewsbury added a lot to his experience. For those of you wondering why two guides are needed, we quickly saw that Martin needed to be able to focus on talking to us while Andy needed to be focused on the road, as we were often driving down narrow roads that were only 1.5 car widths wide with high hedges blocking sightlines. We really enjoyed our time with Martin and Andy. My only caveat is that this is very much a tour that involves driving around and looking at things - it's not particularly active. We did get out at a few locations (churches, key points of interest in the Cadfael books, the iron bridge, Holywell, and of course lunch stops. Thank you, Martin and Andy!

Thank you so much to Martin and Andy, they are the most helpful and friendly people we have ever met as tour guides.
We had a complete revelation about the surrounding area and the area covered by Ellis Peter's novels and the specific locations.
If you are considering a tour in this area, please do book with these gentlemen as they really do pay every attention to detail.
