About
Best Live Performance, Creative Bath Awards 2017 Show Of Strength Theatre Company's FRANKENSTEIN IN BATH reveals an extraordinary, and forgotten, story: how Mary Shelley wrote much of her iconic novel in Bath in 1816/17. Mary and her step sister, Claire Clairmont, lived in Bath for nearly six months. They brought several dark secrets with them and, as autumn turned into winter, a chain of tragic events unfolded around them. The tour reveals the secrets and scandals behind FRANKENSTEIN’s creation, and takes visitors on an extraordinary adventure that explores many unmarked locations - including where Mary wrote her story. The tour starts outside The Abbey Hotel, North Parade – an address Mary visited many times – and ends nearby. Route about a mile, easy walking with stops along the way, lasts c 75 minutes – in plenty time for an 8pm dinner in one of Bath’s excellent restaurants. 2017: 1 July to 30 September, Wed – Sat 6.30 pm; Sundays 4.30pm (not Mon/Tue). All tickets £8, cash only, at the start of the walk – no need to book. Advance booking, if required, at Bath Visitor Information Centre Private tours welcome, by arrangement. The event is not recommended for under 12s.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If I was 5 years old then the exhibits might have been scary. None of them moved which would have made the experience more pleasurable. I was told afterwards that they normally have someone in the rooms frightening people, but on my visit they had not got anyone to do it, (they still charged the same price though) I would have thought £5 would have been about right but the price they charged was ridiculous. Keep your money in your pocket!

A friend sent me the link to this. I love horror but not my friends or partner so sadly I had to visit on my own. Although, I loved it - if you are like me and take your time to look at everything and have a great interest in horror and history then you will be in here 2 hours. I had a great time. Although, I love horror I am a scaredy cat and being on my own in the basement was a challenge - but I tagged on with a Dad with 3 children who came past me when I froze on the basement stairs.. I don't want to spoil it but you will love it give it a go I was laughing so much afterwards. The staff were great and lovely and I learnt so much and was in my element. I just think my partner and friends missed out.

The highlights were the model of the monster and the basement. The first screening of Frankenstein was also interesting and nice to learn about the life of Mary Shelley.

Absolutely amazing, very clever the smells in the rooms really set the scenes, so much to learn really brings the history to life, the amount of research gone into this is incredible, definitely worth a visit . Very helpful friendly staff who help set the mood before you start your tour. Great gift shop at the end so take your gold with you !!

This scores 5/5 on every level!
Brilliant adaption of one of Bath’s 5 storey Georgian houses with every room creating an atmosphere with sound, lighting, smells and art work to tell the story of Mary Shelley and Frankenstein. Interesting from a history, literature, science, art, cinema, social, feminist perspective. Creepy, terrifying, tragic. Incredible detail and sensitive interpretation of Mary Shelley’s monster- huge, breathing and impressive, even to my cynical 14 year old son. The basement is petrifying!
Not one for children under 12 or tacky thrill seekers. This is serious, educational, impressive, and tasteful. Absolutely superb!

A gothic November moon provided the perfect setting for our ‘electric’ tour of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Our host was engaging , knowledgeable and funny. I live and work in Bath and to my shame knew little about this literary connection. I would thoroughly recommend this tour. An hour and half of delicious vignettes that could provide an Eastenders Christmas cliffhanger. Bohemian lifestyles a gogo. Phew.! Mary Shelley - better a great novel than a few poems eh Percy? ACE.

Another great tour by Show of Strength and I would much recommend for those who may like to know more about the wonderful gothic creation by Mary Shelley. The story is delivered with both knowledge and gusto, holding the attention of the audience throughout the walk. A ‘gothic’ masterpiece in its own right.

Captivated from the very first moment! The woman giving the tour was kind and inviting as she waited for a few guests but soon she began her theatrical speile into Gothic Bath. Every journey seemed quick with her lovely extra facts and chat. What a brilliant host. She even dressed the part with a steam punk hat! I didn't know how selacious and full of gossip the Shelley tale was. We had to grab a drink after to talk all the secrets over that we'd learnt. It was a great introduction to the town of Bath and helped us navigate throughout our holidays that weekend. She never went too fast as we walked around and kept us in quiet spots to hear her extraordinary stories. Thankful for all the work she'd done to put Mary on the map. Wish we'd immediately go to the other places to see the other tours available as this was incredible.

We absolutely loved every minute of this walk! Shelia our guide was very knowledgable and told Mary Shelley’s story in a fascinating way. Even the rain didn’t spoil it! It was our favourite part of this visit to bath. We would definitely recommend this walk. 10/10! Thank’s Shelia!

Ah yes, gothic Friday in the rain! But we survived and it wasn't nearly as bad as forecast - or as bad as Mary Shelley's July in 1816 -'the year without a summer'. So glad you enjoyed, delighted to be your favourite thing in Bath and thanks so much for taking the time to say so.
