We visited Bath on a day-trip by train on our own from our hotel in Salisbury. It was easy and comfortable journey, with enough time for sightseeing and bath. The aim was of course to get a swim in the waters of famous hot spring of Bath.
We visited first of all the Bath Abbey and the Roman Bath nearby, the structure raised on a place of roman hot baths of Aqua Sulis town. This sightseeing is a must when in Bath, both Temple of Minerva Sulis including hot pool feeding from Kings Springs and accompanying museum exhibition are very interesting indeed.
Then we wanted to swim and experience hot waters of Bath. There are 2 possibilities – to use a bigger spa with pool placed on the top floors of a new higher building, or swim in the smaller Cross Baths, a separate structure standing at a ground level and feeding from the Cross Spring.
We chose the last one and were much satisfied with our choice due to less amount of visitors and more authentic feeling of a hot springs. Tickets can be bought in advance or bought on spot in the ticket office of the bigger spa.

We drove and hour and a half down to Bath for the Thermae Spa only to find a queue an hour and a half long (why we can’t book online is a mystery to me) so we rang up from the queue and asked if we could book the Cross Bath instead. Luckily for us it was free and for ten minutes we were the only people using the hot waters until a lovely family arrived later on. At just £18 each the Cross Bath is an utter delight especially as I am Pagan. I will definitely be going back for a twilight session. Such a magical place!

As I understand their website and having contacted them by phone, since the pandemic, rules have changed. The Cross Bath is now only available to book for private parties with limited numbers and time at a cost of £400 per session. Pity, as it was a good experience and I don’t consider the previous fee of £18-a-session for non-Bath residents cheap by any means. So greedy of the owners. There were special concessionary ticket prices for eligible Bath residents at this bath and, if I was a resident, I’d be protesting loudly if this therapeutic facility’s access had been withdrawn.

After visiting the disappointing Thermae Bath yesterday I thought I give Cross Bath a visit. No way to book online, I wasted 40 minutes in the telephone queue only to be told it would cost £30 for an hour. Wow, what can they offer? A too small pool with lukewarm water with the possibility of having to wait for the changing cabins in cold, rainy weather?
I came here all the way from London for four days of natural hot springs treatment for pain relief or so I thought..
I was already very sceptical after last night’s visit in the Thermae because I missed the typical smell of sulphur which all the natural hot springs I ever visited had.
No thanks, terrible value and run down facilities.

If laying in a 10 feet diameter tiled pool of 35c water - less than body temp - is your idea of a hot spring then this is for you. Sitting in the open air in autumn freezing to death for £30 isn't a pleasant experience.

Add to that the effort it took to get booked; endless phone calls and emails that no one responded to), and customer service on the day across the road at the reception (the woman ignored us for 10 min until we spoke up, and then looked at my wife as if she'd just insulted her mother, before saying she couldn't deal with pre booked, pre paid e-tickets on my mobile) and you have something to be avoided.

Both this historic thermal open air bath and the connected spa are located on the Bath Street. They have sessions of one and a half hour. You can book the bath for private use otherwise you have to share with roughly 10 people. It is a well restored historic old building. It has a unique history. In 1688 Prince James was born to King James and his supposedly barren wife Mary Modena. It is believed that she had her son after she bathed in the water of this bath. Hence, the thankful couple placed a Cross at this point. This symbol of royal patronage brought a lot of prestige to the town.

In a delightful build from the 1780s is another natural spa and open air baths in the famous city. It is justifiably classed as Grade I Listed.

Taking advantage of geothermal energy that elevates water temperature far underground to a high degree results in relaxing and warm waters at surface level. All available here.

We arrived at 6pm on a Friday evening and had the whole place to ourselves as nobody else booked in. My son absolutely loved it. The outdoor warm waters under the stars was an experience I won’t forget in a long time. Simply brilliant.

I booked the Cross Bath for 4 of us as a birthday treat for one of my friends. We had a 10am session on a Sunday morning, sessions are 90 minutes at £20pp. The pool is directly opposite the Thermae Spa and takes 10 people only and you have to book 48 hours prior. It isn’t very big but adequate for the 10 people max. It is open air and although the water is hot we all did think it would be hotter. As luck would have it we had the pool to ourselves for our session which made it more special. There are 3 changing booths which if the place is fully booked I can imagine would cause so queuing and would get chilly for those waiting! There are plenty of lockers to store valuables.

The water was absolutely gorgeous to soak in. Warm but not too warm that you feel faint afterwards. The only thing that didn't feel worth £20 was the changing rooms. There were only 2 small, unlit ones that were quickly occupied so the other people either had to change in a small bathroom with a wet floor or stand in the cold waiting for the change rooms to be freed. To be fair we visited during cold time of the year but I feel that the change rooms situation could be improved to end off the relaxing experience of the water.
