- Henny C3 contributionsSmall and informingI visited yesterday and enjoyed wandering round the small museum. The individual rooms depicting periods in American history felt atmospheric. The quilt collection was impressive. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic to share interesting facts. The exhibition 'The American Road Trip' might have been more tilted towards children but was still very enjoyable. I really enjoyed walking round the gardens and grounds. Definitely worth another visit.Thank you very much for your five-star review! - William MBournemouth, United Kingdom87 contributionsLearn something new about American history.A museum where they’ve made an effort to keep it informative, interesting and not over-complicated. Very helpful guides told us about the context of each room and answered every dim question enthusiastically. The quilts recalled memories of those in Lincoln NE and were brilliant. The gardens in April were OK but quiet. This was a charity site yet we wonder why it needs donations when the US should be financing them generously ! Even so it was rewarding to revisit after a fifty year gap.Hello there William, thank you very much for your five-star review! We are so glad you enjoyed your visit around the museum, and that you learned as much as you did from our guides and displays. With the Summer season only a few weeks away now, we hope that the gardens will spring into life with even more colour very soon! - gfsc5Perth, Australia1,811 contributionsSurprise find in EnglandThis museum in Claverton Manor was established by two guys as a means of showing America in a different light. It includes complete rooms (with furniture) that they bought as well as stacks of other bits and pieces from furniture to Native American objects. Lots and lots to see. Of special interest to my wife was the astounding collection of quilts all beautifully displayed. Worth taking the time to look through them all - which we did. We also spent time looking through the Route 66 exhibition which was fun. The whole place is well worth a visit. It's very well done. From memory there were 25 spaces/rooms to view. Highly recommended.Thank you for your 5 star review. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit. - Welsh Wizard5 contributionsDeli Cafe - DisappointingMe and my elderly mother visited yesterday. The staff in general, expecially the reception staff were extremely helpful and the staff member who helped us with hiring the Scooter. However, I was disappointed with the cafe experience. We were looking forward to a nice hot cup of tea on the terrace before the drive back to Cardiff. I was surprised at the lack of choice - there was just one tea to choose from. I was handed a mug of tea which had previously been poured, not long ago maybe, but I didn't see boiling water go on the teabag, so I don't know; by the time I got out onto the veranda, my tea was luke warm and not very enjoyable. With hindsight I should have returned and asked for a replacement but I was looking after my elderly mother, so it was difficult. To be honest, I was expecting a pot of tea, which would have kept hot. My mother wanted a herbal tea, but as I said earlier, there was only one tea as far as I could see, some my mother made do with a water. I looked at the ice cream as an option but it was big covered tubs in a fridge with no lables or prices and it didn't look particulary inviting. As you seem to take pride in your Deli Cafe could I suggest you review these things I have mentioned. If you are trying to replicate an Amercian Deli, I am sure any Amercian, visitors would expect a better tea experience!Thank you for visiting and providing feedback on your visit which is very important to us. We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed by your experience with the Deli. We do in fact offer a range of teas and apologise that the choices weren’t made clearer to you on the day. We have shared your feedback with the Deli team as we continually look to provide the best experience possible for all of our visitors. We do hope that you’ll give us another chance in the future. Our team of lovely staff and volunteers would be happy to assist you during a future visit.Written 21 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 May 2024
- Peter HTemplecombe, United Kingdom2 contributionsA great day outMy wife and I visited the American Museum and Gardens today. It was an excellent visit. The person in the reception was very welcoming, and very helpful. After a brief look at the Gardens we headed for the museum. Again the person in the reception was very welcoming and helpful. There were many exhibits which were very interesting: artefacts, sculptures, paintings, and quilts, which were quite amazing. We had an excellent lunch in the American Deli - and then for a more leisurely look at the gardens. We made sure we were back at the museum for a ‘Pop up’ talk on ‘Potions & Plague’. In incredibly interesting 15 minute talk about how the early settlers in America dealt with disease, etc. Who knew that one of our most successful exports and imports was disease! It was a great visit, and I happily recommend it to anyone.Thank you for your 5-star review Peter and we are so glad that you enjoyed your visit and all that we have on offer. Charming, knowledgeable staff in the various rooms - particularly the bespectacled chap upstairs, the lady playing a 'pilgrim' character at the Inn and the folk art expert. Great that it made salient references to the Native American experience too. Spot on. Loved the new 'Road Trip' exhibit. We visited the gardens during the day in December, so the flora and fauna was not at it’s best. The gardens were also modified to accommodate the Christmas light trail which was obviously not in full swing at the time we were there. All of that being said, we were a little disappointed in the size of the garden for the cost of entrance. We have a young son, so we were also sad to learn that the children’s garden was closed due to wet weather too. We are National Trust members and can normally enjoy a landscaped garden as a family, but this one is particularly small for the admission cost.
All in all, I would say the American Museum and Gardens is most suited for older children and adults who are more interested in the museum than the garden. It was good, but we don’t feel a repeat visit is necessary for many years to come.

My main gripe with this museum is the extremely complicated website. It would (I’m sure) be so simple to set up online booking. That way, visitors would know how many tickets are available on any day and for any session - 11am, 1pm & 3pm.
We have planned a visit here for a while, looking forward to the special Night & Day: 1930’s fashion exhibition and a tour of the manor itself. We allowed plenty of time but on arrival we were told that all 12 places on the conducted tour had been purchased. If we’d like to wait an additional 2 hours, we could get in the next tour.....duh? Even with our love of gardens, we could not spend that amount of time ‘wandering & waiting’.
I found the Night & Day special exhibition rather underwhelming to be honest and a lack of a map at the ticket office was more than a tad frustrating....we did ask for one but were handed a membership form!
So, if one wants to have a guided tour of Claverton Manor.....be sure to be at the ticket office VERY early and make sure you get a map of the site!

Hi Iloveeatingout59 and thanks for visiting us.
We're so sorry to hear you weren't able to visit our beautiful American heritage and decorative art collection, which is housed in our manor house. As you will appreciate we have had to make a lot of adjustments to the normal visit in order to comply with current Covid legislation. As a result we have been offering chaperoned visits in small groups as regularly as our stewarding levels (also affected by Covid) will allow.
We've taken the decision not to offer pre-booking for the museum as this is not always the best solution. Since museums and galleries have re-opened 20-40% of people who book are ‘no-shows’, but you have to reserve their tickets just in case they arrive at the last minute. This means that the number of visitors we could welcome would be even fewer.
As the Covid landscape changes, more volunteers return and staff come back from furlough we'll be able to welcome more people into the museum once again.
Regarding the Night and Day exhibition: 1930s fashion and photography, we have had some very positive feedback both on Tripadvisor (as other reviews demonstrate) and through other channels. We’re sorry it wasn’t to your taste.
Finally, we do have maps available in the Ticket Office and every visitor should receive one. We’re so sorry this didn’t happen in your case. We will make sure that maps are available in the future.
We do hope you’ll visit us again, so that we can demonstrate the full range of what the American Museum and Gardens can offer.

What a wonderful place. We arrived at 10 am and stayed until after 4 pm. There are few places where one can spend a whole day. The gardens are magnificent and quite extensive. The museum itself is over 3 floors and has some very fine exhibits of N American folk art, reconstructed rooms, quilts, native American artefacts, etc. There is also a gallery which holds exhibitions. Vey good cafe. We were staying in Bath and shared a taxi to get here (about £10) It is down a very narrow road and not served by public transport.

Dear MYDOGISFINN
Thank you so much for visiting American Museum & Gardens.
We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your museum visit so much. There is indeed so much to see here! Many people underestimate the amount of time they need to allow. We recommend a minimum of three hours to see the gardens, the museum, the folk art gallery and the exhibition. The current exhibition showing until 31st October 2021 is 'Shooting Stars: Britain and America in the 1970s' by Carinthia West has had rave reviews and visitors have really enjoyed its nostalgic atmosphere.
Visitors who have time to enjoy lunch on the terrace overlooking the magnificent Limpley Stoke valley are never disappointed. Our Garden Café serves a range of delicious lunches, snacks and sweet treats in addition to a wide range of beverages.
We're pleased that you were able to share a taxi to get to us. For those with their own transport we offer free parking and if you travel here by bike, we'll even reward you with a drink and a home-baked cookie from our American Kitchen. It is possible to reach us by public transport if you're able to walk 15 minutes from the nearest bus stop. Full details of how to get to us are on our website https://americanmuseum.org/visit/getting-here/
We hope you'll visit again one day.

On arrival we were told that disable parking was full and not available and that we would have to walk about 3 minutes on uneven ground to get to the mannor.
However when walking to the mannor, which took longer than 3 mins due to mobility issues we found there were lots of spaces available for disabled parking and that cars were being let into that carpark that were not displaying a blue disabled badge. As we had just walked down a steep, uneven and slightly muddy hill I was not prepared at that time to go back up the hill to move the car into the disabled parking spots.
There were lights and music playing whilst we were walking up the mannor drive which was nice a got us into the spirits a little and gave me hope for the rest of the event.
Hope was short lived.
What was described on the Web site as being enchanting, magical and something to allow at least and hour to walk through, was actually very disappointing.
There were very few lights to look at and we were all, adults and children, very unmoved and a little deflated by the whole experience.
The few lights that were there did look nice, but it only took us about 25 minutes to do the whole thing and when we got to the end we asked someone "is that it?" As we were very disappointed and puzzled how little there was.
I did get a few nice photos of the few light "displays" that were there.
Will not be attending this event again, not worth the hour drive and do not recommend this event for the money being charged for it.

So first of all, I should say that Covid has thrown many museums into disarray.... but what it can’t destroy is great staff/volunteer teams! This place is probably great under normal conditions but the booking process is bonkers.
Thus we arrive at 10.15, after a twenty five minute climb up the hill, to find we are just too late to get entry to the main house. I would have booked snd paid days before but they didn’t have the facility ‘because some had failed to show up in the past’. If so they lose the ticket and you re-sell?!
The gardens are gorgeous and show evidence of thoughtful planting and wonderful care.
The exhibition was fun and interesting.
Cafe food delicious and, again, with friendly helpful staff.
We were just soooo disappointed not to see the house. What a real shame.

Hi Gazzard1 and thanks for coming to see us.
Sorry to hear you didn't get to see the house. We've taken the decision not to do pre-booking for the house due to some of the reasons our colleague mentioned. Since museums, galleries and others have re-opened between 20 and 40% of people who book tickets just don't turn up (or tell you they are not coming) but you have to keep their place just in case. This is hard for our small team to keep up with.
As the Covid landscape changes, our volunteers return, staff come back from furlough we'll be able to welcome more people into the manor house.
Hope we'll see you again soon.

We went to light show on Christmas Eve. It was a very disappointing show - it took us only about 30 minutes to walk around and compared with similar shows we’ve been it was very poor - certainly not worth the £19.50 charged. It took nearly as long to walk to and from the car park as it did to go round the show. The cafe at the start was poorly organised, only one till for food and drinks and very slow service. I certainly wouldn’t return to this next year.

Thank you for your review and for visiting. We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the Christmas lights experience. We worked with an external company who provided the lights and the food offer. Your honest feedback is very important to us and we will take it on board for future planning. We do hope you will give us another chance and visit during the day or for one of our other exciting events.

We visited on the 4th July with our 2 dogs, we were greeted by a friendly lady at the entrance and the dogs were offered treats. We paid to visit the gardens only as dogs are not allowed in the museum (understandably).
We were given a map and told where we could go, the gardens were well kept and managed and there were a few photos opportunities, unfortunately a couple of the gates were locked (no explanation) onto the open field so we had to turn around and go back the way we had come.
My overall impression was if you've got dogs and don't want to take it in turns to go into the museum and look after the dog whilst you wait there isn't that much to see. The gardens are quiet small, we walked around them stopping for photos within an hour. I'm sure the museum is very interesting and informative based on other reviews but if you want to just visit the gardens there are much better alternatives. The Botanical Gardens in Bath are free to visit with on road parking and were absolutely beautiful and the National Trust owned Prior Park was a hidden gem, free to visit if you're a NT member, again we found free on road parking on one of the surrounding roads.

Thank you for taking time to give us feedback on your visit. We are delighted you had a warm welcome, but are sorry to hear that you were disappointed by some of your visit. The gates are normally open and are just kept closed if livestock were grazing in the parklands at time. The gardens were completely redesigned by Washington DC based landscaped architectural firm Oheme, van Sweden and were inspired by American-themed gardens and landscapes. The American Museum & Gardens were their first commission in the UK and Europe making our gardens quite unique. We host a range of exciting events throughout the year using spaces in our gardens which might give you a different experience. We do hope you’ll come to visit again in the future.

America is vast and the history, although short, is expansive. The museum gives you a slice of this history though to the beginning of the 20th centuary althogh it skims over the surface in places the room sttings from different areas and periods are very well staged and give a real feel for the living conditions of the time. The best part for me was the flat weave rugs/blankets and quilts in the Textile Room; they are stunning !!!

Spent a very pleasant couple of hours here wandering around the gardens. The bonus being they have a tramper scooter which took the hill this garden is spread out over with ease. Sadly the tea rooms were under social distancing so only limited fare available and the shop and herb shop were closed. Amazing display of alliums and beautiful roses.

Always a pleasure to visit this museum, but have just seen the wonderful new exhibition 'Dress to Redress' featuring the work of Anishinabe Native American artist Celeste Pedri-Spade. Wow!!! Described as 'wearable art', she has created stunning and beautifully constructed outfits, but they are so much more. Each has a deeper message about her personal ancestry, the treatment of indigenous people and a vision of the their future. Very though-provoking and well done. Well worth a visit!

Dear HalfandHaf,
We are so glad you have enjoyed Celeste's exhibition! We were very happy to welcome her and her husband Robert at the museum for a two week residency in which they held very valuable workshops. Currently we have a new exhibition on American Dinosaur Explorers especially catered for families and children, but in March we will have a new exhibition catered more towards adults.
Hopefully see you again soon!

I was there today Sunday 19/8/18 (visiting the textile fair) so I saw first hand what’s happening. A large part of the grounds/gardens are closed off and that part is essentially a large building site. Being a Sunday there were no trade persons at work so it could be different on a weekday. There are information boards up on the perimeter railings telling you what’s happening with the installation of a new American Garden and new ticket office/Welcome Centre. The main house Claverton Manor that houses the main collection, the Exhibition Gallery, the Folk Art Gallery, shops and cafe and toilets are all open. You can sit out on the terrace and enjoy the magnificent view of the valley ahead of you but some of your view on the right hand side will be of the garden works area and is not accessible.
I didn’t go into the main house /museum on this occasion so can’t speak about that.
You can walk down to the Mount Vernon Garden by passing the garden works (I did this) and I think you can still access the Arboretum/Parkland (I didn’t do this today).
I was told by the person at the arrival kiosk that they hope to have the new Gardens area open on 15th September.
I hope this helps

Is there a French translation

Hi terrywood10. As a small independent Museum on the edge of Bath we tend not to welcome as many overseas visitors as the city does so our static, written interpretation is just in English. Many of our volunteers are able to speak other languages so if there are any specific items of interest which you need additional help with, in French, do ask when you're here and one of the team should be able to help.

Hi Fransan2014 and sorry for delay in getting back to you. Sorry but nothing this year, other than our Kaffe Fassett inspiration corner in our Gallery shop.
Kaffe's a great friend of the Museum and we KNOW he'll be back with us VERY soon (if you get our drift :) ).
You can keep up to date with all the Museums news and events on our Facebook, Twitter and webpages.

Thank you for posing this question Lesley. Our Period Rooms span 200 years of American domestic life from 1690 to 1860, many simply showing the craftsmanship of the early colonies through to the new Independent United States. However, this does include New Mexico with it's Penitente Brotherhood, the Puritan's of New England, the United Society of Believers in Christs Second Appearing (AKA the Shakers) who had communities down the East coast and into the Midwest, plus the Pennsylvania Germans (AKA Penn-Deutsch) of Pennsylvania who include sects such as the Amish, Mennonite and Huguenots.
We re-open from Saturday 19 March and encourage you to come travel through these room settings with us when you can.
