- ROxfordOxfordshire, United Kingdom44 contributionsA great museum in a great CityWe thoroughly enjoyed our recent visit to Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein in Bath. A brilliant mix of facts and fun. Set over a few floors in a lovely listed property, your journey starts with the history of Mary’s early life, the inspiration to write her famous book, the many films that followed and much much more. There is an attic and basement too with optional extras of an Escape Room. Nice gift shop on the way out and the staff were very welcoming. Would definitely recommend a visit and l thought it was very reasonably priced too.Hi 673ry thank you for visiting us and taking time to leave a lovely review. We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit and appreciated all the museum has to offer. We are a unique attraction for the city of Bath and the staff here are all very dedicated to sharing Mary's fascinating life story with our guests. We will pass your kind words onto the team. - Rachel TTewkesbury, United Kingdom16 contributionsGreatHaving read the reviews about this attraction before coming to Bath we were very keen to visit and weren't disappointed. Definitely well worth a visit and a must on your trip to Bath. Information and displays were both interesting and fun. Lots of detail into the life of Mary Shelley, the novel itself and about how the story has been adapted over the past 200 years in films, plays and even TV advertising. Staff were very welcoming . Attraction was easy to book tickets in advance and find.Hi F8056XErachelt thank you for visiting us and for taking the time to leave us a positive review, we really appreciate it and will pass your kind comments on to our hosts. - Scare QueenNorth Yorkshire, United Kingdom52 contributionsit's Alive!!! And you must visit!!!Absolutely fabulous museum. I enjoyed visiting a few attractions in Bath, but this one was simply the best! In fact it's definitely one of my most favourite and memorable. I only wish there was more like this in the country in general! Unfortunately being solo and a very quiet day, I couldn't face doing the scary 'Basement' by myself. Having worked as a scare actress, I know how mean they can be when visiting alone, ha ha! Will do it next time with friends. I also definitely want to do the escape rooms sometime too. Anyway the reason I visited was to learn about Mary Shelley. My goodness I had zero idea about her life and how tragic it was! You can see how much Frankenstein is influenced by her life and experiences. I only wish she was alive today to see how much success her story has had, that it's still making money and has had various versions of her story to this day. The museum itself is incredible. Themed spectacularly and a must for anyone who likes the creepy and macabre. It definitely makes you feel like you walked into Mary Shelley's world. I cannot wait to return. And seeing the creature at the end was just incredible. The best animatronic I have seen since visiting Harry Potter World in Universal Studios. Five star! For anyone who is of a nervous disposition, the museum is 'safe' to walk around. You only need to fear the Basement. I highly recommend this museum.Hi scarequeen, wow! Thank you for your fabulous 5 star review, we greatly appreciate it! Mary Shelley certainly led a fascinating yet tragic life and we are so passionate about sharing her story with our guests so it's great to hear that others find it so interesting as well and can take those memories of their visit home with them. We will pass on your incredibly kind words to our creature - he is the star on the show! We truly hope you will visit us again very soon, please bring your friends and next time brave the basement!Written 15 March 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 March 2024
- Laura BBrighton, United Kingdom6 contributionsVery spooky, but incredibly fun!All in all, this was a great experience. The actors were completely in character and made the experience so engaging for us. The museum itself has clearly had a lot of thought and effort put into the design, and truly was an immersive experience. We also opted to do the Victor Lair Escape Room. Our host was fantastic and told a great story. The room itself was very spooky, and the decoration really matched the gory aesthetic of the whole building. Only criticism I have is that there is no timer in the room, so it's hard to know how much time is left to escape - then again, this may just be part of the experience to keep you on edge...Hi laurabP4271BG thank you for visiting and for leaving a fabulous review. We're so pleased you enjoyed your visit and appreciated all the museum has to offer. We hope you managed to escape Victor's Lair! Victor is a bit too cruel to supply his victims with a timer but we'll pass on your comments! - deborah m23 contributionsGreat funWe thoroughly enjoyed our visit, came out buzzing ( even though we did not survive the escape room :) ). It was good macabre fun, especially the basement. The infographics and props/sounds were great...a very immersive experience. A shockingly good time- pun intended- for those who like things a little unusual!Dear deborahmA5147KA Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we hugely appreciate it. We are sorry you didn't make it out of the escape room but please hang onto your original booking as we can give you a discount to try out the other one! - Mick K10 contributionsHorribly goodFound this gem while searching for things to do in Bath and as an old horror movie fan it was a must. I dragged my wife along who isn't a Horror fan but she found the story of Mary Shelly's Strange and tragic life fascinating as did I. The creature features (about the Mosnster the the cultural influences the story has had are brilliant). The basement immersive horror experience won't be for everyone (probably not young children or the faint hearted) but I found it fun (my wife gave it a miss). All in all a great attraction.Dear mickkE3985HV Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review which is greatly appreciated. We are delighted you had a great visit. We exist to tell people about the incredible, yet tragic life story of Mary Shelley and her lasting legacy that is Frankenstein. - Gayle A3 contributionsExcellent experienceThis place is a must on a visit to Bath. The design and decoration of the house was brilliantly done. The monster was a marvel to behold. The information about Mary Shelley and her complex relationships was excellent and gave great insight into the influences that helped her create her story. Would definitely recommend this as a place to visit.Dear 682gaylea Thank you for your lovey review which we will share with our team. We are delighted you enjoyed your experience and referenced the Creature in the lab. We are very proud to say he is the only one that has ever been recreated exactly as young Mary Shelley imagined. All of the decor in the building was created by hand by a wonderful team of local artists. We very much hope you will come back and visit us again soon.Written 26 March 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 March 2024

We visited the escape room and this included a tour of the museum. The museum is defiantly only suitable for older children and my 12 year old is studying MSF so he was able to see how the story came to life.
It is a well themed museum with lots of reading plaques and the free pinball table was a hit as the kids had never played one like it before. The basement maze was lots of scary fun, def worth a scream or two. I loved all the decor, they really went to town to give an experience when visiting.
The Escape Room whilst was absolutely fantastic I would say it was particularly hard for a family of two adults and two kids aged 12 and 14. We found finding the clues frustrating to find and so I would say it was more suited to a group of adults than a young family. This was the first escape room I've not escaped and felt quite despondent that for the price (£110), we didn't get extra time to at least finish all the clues (with some help). I akin it to watching a film but being kicked out before the end.
Not that we have needed it previously, but other escape rooms have allowed you some extra time to finish the clues. This is by no means a criticism as the room is well themed with lots of atmospheric noises and lights. Just if you are looking at booking it for a family, have a think about the age of the kids you want to take part.
I would def recommend the escape room for groups of adults, one of the best themed ones I've been to in a while.

We went to a few attractions in Bath and this was by far the best one and worth the price.
Its a unique attraction and is not just simply a museum you are guided through different floors with a complimentary guide which I think was beautifully presented and usually other attractions would be charging minimum £3.00. There are some gimmicks to certain floors for example a speaker where you can hear a radio announcement, a figure of the monster which is reflected through Mary Shelly's description and many more. I don't want to give too much away as i liked doing the experience not knowing what i was coming in to like the basement experience. All the staff were friendly and lovely they had a nice little gift shop and i just found it a pleasure. What i noticed also is when we visited other attractions for example the Roman Baths and the Thermal Spa it was overcrowded and both didn't manage the crowds very well however this attraction certainly did I didn't feel overcrowded and rushed and felt like i could take my time looking at all the features. It took us under an hour to complete the whole experience and i would recommend this to anyone i don't even think you really need to be a fan of Frankenstein the experience was enjoyment enough. I would be a little apprehensive to take young children to the basement experience however the rest of the museum would be fine for them. Furthermore i had to change my booking time and the staff were very accommodating. We went on the opening day and I can see this attraction gaining popularity.

What an Excellent experience we had and one we would recommend visiting if you get the chance. Only opening back in July, this new experience was interesting and dispute knowing a fair amount about this fantastic author and book we definitely come away knowing something more. The attraction was set over many floors with lots of little hidden gems and excellent attention to detail with all of the props etc. Moving into the modern they also have a good selection of movie information and to top it off the basement adds that little ‘scare’ element……. Not too scary but good for a small thrill. Go along and support this new attraction, for the reasonable entrance fee (we booked online a revived a discount) and it will go from strength to strength. If I had one small critique it would be that the room fragrance was extremely strong in each room and at times a little over powering.

We visited this museum on their £10 entry for June offer which I would say is a good price for the attraction. Each floor was very informative with concise placards, however it wasn’t always clear what order to read them in, but still very interesting.
The basement was much scarier than I thought it would be but this was a pleasant surprise! The staff are also very friendly and helpful.
We were surprised to learn this museum was a little under a year old! Considering this, we were very impressed with our visit and would recommend if you enjoy horror, history and literature.

This was my first time in bath and The Mary Shelly’s House of Frankenstein was one of the thing’s on my definite to do list!…and I’m going to have to say it was absolutely fantastic, and didn’t disappoint!! There are four floor’s all with different themed room’s telling the story of Mary Shelly’s life and the creation of her gothic horror masterpiece Frankenstein! It’s a really immersive experience where you forget you’re in a museum but in the world of Mary Shelly as there are creepy sound effects, cool lighting, and theming throughout! All I say is Beware of the Basement!! I swore out loud a few time’s lol! Not for the faint hearted!😱.I would highly recommend this attraction to all horror fan’s,non horror fan’s that like literature and want to know More about the author, and people that are looking for something different!…this attraction so well thought out, well designed and really well done..I absolutely loved it!! And I would definitely go again!❤️xx

We really enjoyed our visit to the House of Frankenstein. It has clearly been a labour of love. A charming old Victorian four storey house that seems perfect for the subject, though very unfortunate for disabled access.
The rooms are beautifully put together. There is a wealth of detail on the creation of the story. I've noticed some comments about how "you could just google this," I do not agree as the information has been clearly researched and curated amongst a wealth of mutlisensory stimulus. There are with very imaginative interactives that are lightly and thoughtfully placed, from motion sensors, and a the cot rocking all of its own accord, to more subtle touches such sas of the text written in mirror writing, so that you read it in the mirror - which perfectly and poetically reflects the theme of questioning reality; physical matter over spectres, etc. But the crowning glory is the real Monster! - I don't want to spoil it, but it was fantastic. His eyes followed us around the room! And we absolutely LOVED the 16 minute film of the first ever Frankenstein movie.
Then there is brilliant immersive experience in the basement, in the dark. I was so scared out of my mind and screaming that unfortunately the Monster had to come out of character to check I was Okay! It was very kind of him! We left with such a buzz - it's just a bit of fun, so anyone mocking it should let themselves go a bit, there's nothing wrong with a few jump scares and severed hands suddenly flying at you!
We were fortunate to have had the January sale and gone in for £10 per adult, which we were very happy with. I can understand why people feel the standard price of £17.50 is a bit on the dear side, I'm not sure we would have paid that price. Perhaps the curators could consider that entry price allowing repeat entry for a year or something?

Highly recommend to anyone who loves a bit of horror/history in their lives, this museum has so much information about Mary Shelley and extended family, it's incredible. All of the props and memorabilia are fascinating to spot in the rooms and the life size monster figure is just outstanding. The basement is really creepy too, it all adds to the atmosphere and makes it absolute perfection! I cannot wait until the escape room is done, I will be going back to try it out and I already have a few friends that want to go and I will be going back with them!

OMG! What an amazing, memorable, and educational experience.
This Museum tells the fascinating and sad life story of Mary Shelly and the story of her classic creation Frankenstein and how Hollywood developed it. The whole Museum in a lovely Bath Town House is made of rooms filled with the macabre, passageways down which you half glimpse things, flickering lights, and eerie sounds. There are hands-on things to try out a mini 7 seat cinema in the attic showing when I was there a silent 1920s version of Frankenstein.
The Basement is amazing if a bit scary experience. It's like you have walked into and become part of a hammer horror film.
The staff members are very friendly and helpful and I found booking tickets on the website very easy to do.
I absolutely loved my visit and I would personally give this 50 stars not 5. I will be going again!

A fascinating history into Mary Shelley, her life, loves and despair.
Obviously billed as a Frankenstein experience I found it fascinating to learn about Mary. She had a pretty torrid life starting in infancy with the death of her mother when she was just 11 days old.
The museum also takes you on a journey through her late teens and early twenties when she spent time with Percy Bysshe Shelley whom she later married, and their summer spent with Lord Byron who laid down the challenge of writing a horror story - and Frankenstein was born!
The tour is spread over three floors of the building with different focuses on Mary's life or the Frankenstein story but it finishes in the cellar if you dare to go down!
There is an escape room in development but not yet open to the public unfortunately.

Having previously booked on line, we arrived in Bath slightly earlier than expected. The ‘character’ at the front door looked more inkeeping from Back to the Future than Frankenstein related. Perhaps a blood splattered gent in Victorian attire might have been better. Anyhow, the young lady said an early arrival would not be a problem and we were given a quick directional guide of the house. This attraction describes itself as ‘immersive’
“The word ‘immersive’ is used to describe experiences that completely surround a person to make them feel part of an alternative environment and requiring the audience to interact with the set and actors”
Sadly, there were no actors and very little interaction. There were different ‘odours’ in various rooms, but it was hard to determine what they were or how they connected to where we were at the time and so would have difficulty in considering this as “immersive”. The life story of Mary Shelly is well laid out and there is plenty of it and there are a couple of audio speakers (literally two of them!) which didn’t add to very much. Maybe a few more with a tad more information could give the visitor a little respite from so much reading. The ‘highlight’ was the model of the monster, but again, with a little imagination, the room it’s in could be better and a little interactive.
The ‘dungeon’ was a little disappointing, just a very small ‘maze’ made of strips of cloth with a few bangs and puffs of smoke in a dark basement to scare. Sadly, it didn’t. The illuminated skeleton and the appearing ‘pig’ hardly related to Frankenstein or Mary Shelly.
I hope, as this attraction is relatively new, it will steadily improve. The addition of the escape room may go some way. For me, more interaction would benefit from actors and the introduction of VR headsets (the way forward for many immersive experiences) would greatly improve the visit.
I wish it all the best for the future, but at present, it’s just average and an ok way to pass 90 minutes

What is a suitable minimum age for visitors? Is 12years too young?
Written 15 March 2023
It depends on how the child responds to horror content, I think most 12 year olds would be fine with this museum (and I saw younger visitors during my time there). There are sound effects and an animatronic which may not be suitable for a child who is sensitive to horror elements. The basement is the scariest part of the museum, and many people will avoid it.
