About
A vintage and curious cocktail bar found in some of Bath's unique vaults; we're in the heart of this World Heritage City. A quirky and delightful secret for the lucky few that venture to find it, Opium is tucked away under the landmark Pulteney Bridge much like the old Laudanum and Opiate dens of the Victorian era. The bar is stocked with a wide range of international beers and spirits and staffed by bartenders who can mix and concoct these ingredients into the most wondrous (and affordable) cocktails you've ever indulged in. It's easy to imagine yourself in the company of Sherlock Holmes, H.G Wells, Janis Joplin or William Burroughs as you sip your perfectly made cocktail. Check out the secret room for parties. To appreciate the beauty of the place, have a virtual tour on our website.

Staff friendly and welcoming Cocktails great Setting unlike anywhere else we have ever been. Stunning. Small rooms with such character and style. Music from the 80s and creates the perfect atmosphere We will return for definite.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2022
- StiffybingBromsgrove, United Kingdom3 contributionsOff the beaten track but definitely worth itWe wanted somewhere really special to extend our evening and we followed our Google map across Pulteney Bridge and down a side street a bit hesitantly. What we found, tucked under the road down towards the river, in a series of vaulted rooms, was a beautiful little gem of a bar. Eclectically decorated, with friendly staff and a restrained menu of classic cocktails. We ended up staying for 3 drinks each, trying out different ones as we just couldn't decide. I'd rather have a small menu of drinks made expertly than a giant menu of cocktails made by staff who have to get a book out to remember them. My husband was delighted to find an old pump organ in one of the rooms so we enjoyed playing with that as a bonus. I wish we lived closer so we could visit regularly, but perhaps, that wouldn't be such a good idea for our bank balance!Visited January 2023Written 14 January 2023
- Robbie H6 contributionsCharacter at it's BestLooking for a place to finish the evening after dinner and found this place. Almost hidden but when found just oozed with character. This is quirky at it's quirkiest and absolutely delightful. Who else would put brass bathroom taps on the door to the toilets! Very friendly and helpful at the bar. Service to the table. Comfy seats. Great atmosphere. It was Easter week so tried the mini egg martini which rivaled any martini cocktail, anywhere. Wine not over priced and very good. This place should be packed, every night.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2023
- Abby M1 contributionPerfect Cocktail Masterclass! The cocktail masterclass was excellent! Got to make 2 cocktails from the menu and a third creation of our own, plus a shooter each! The atmosphere there is very quirky and fun. The staff were very helpful and knowledgable, and made it a very fun experience that I would definitely recommendVisited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 April 2023

Google maps will take you down a road making you think it doesnt exist, but walk down the slope and you'll find it below! We attended a cocktail making class here for a hen party - and due to extreme traffic issues, our 2pm masterclass ended up happening at 3pm. Opium were so accommodating, despite our crazy late arrival, they fit everything in and condensed it down. By far one of the highlights of the weekend. Jack was absolutely amazing, so attentive and fun! the drinks were also fantastic. overall one of the best moments of the henVisited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 4 September 2023
- Helen picieBexhill-on-Sea, United Kingdom31 contributionsAmazing bar. You must visit!Found this bar when looking online for a club I used to go to back in the day under Pulteney Bridge. It’s located underground. If you cross Pulteney Bridge and take a left there’s a left turn that takes you back on yourself and the bar is located under the road you’ve walked down. Very atmospheric, great range of cocktails including some location specific as well as classic ones. Friendly cheerful service it’s a must visit. Could have done with a few more people in there for the vibe so definitely go and give it a try. If I lived locally again I would go a lot. Just loved the incense smell walking in and the comfy sofa areas with loads to look at. My camera on phone not great but have included a few pics.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2023

Opium is a little gem of a bar. It is very hard to leave the premises after settling in comfortably with a drink in hand.

Probably the coolest bar in Bath, located under the arches. The decor is great, bar staff were friendly and well worth a visit

Indifferent bar staff, wasn’t very busy, still had to wait ages for our drinks. Cocktail was ok, champagne was bad. Big issue is toilets, only two unisex cubicles. We left before it got busy, but dread to think how long you have to queue, for a messy toilet. Not great, especially for women.

If you are in Bath for drinks you must visit Opium Bar. The decor is fantastic, it's situated underground and it has a great feel to the place.
I wanted to say a huge thank you to the team for the cocktail masterclass I organised for a hen party last weekend. The owner opened the bar especially for us as it was Bank Holiday Sunday.
It was great to have the opportunity to show my friends this bar. They loved it as much as I do!
Rob that ran the class was exceptional, especially when trying to managed us all. He was super friendly, efficient and good fun.
Highly recommend.

Not good at all.
Went in for a drink after dinner and despite the fact that it did not seem busy, we left after 45 minutes having not had a drink!
We arrived, the place looked amazing, really unique and quirky, and headed to the bar. It was suggested that we take a seat and they would come and take our order.
After 20 minutes of no service, we headed up to the bar to order and pay.
We waited 20-25 minutes and no drink arrived, at which point we had to leave to get the train home so requested a refund.
The guy that was serving us did seem very apologetic, but the lady who processed the refund (I assume she was the manager) was very cold with us and did not say a word - perhaps she thought it was our fault and we were un-reasonable, who knows.

Coolest bar in town. Fair to say it takes a bit of finding, head out on Poultney bridge, turn left and double back so you think you are going under the river and you find it. Fab range of cocktails and gins, super friendly staff. So different from every where else. My favourite new place.

Would you recommend booking a table for a Saturday night? Does it get busy here or too loud?

Hey! It's more of a drink bar - I don't think they offer any food there actually. It does get a bit busy in the eve on Friday and Saturday but the music is not unbearably too loud - a lot of seating space and more chilled out I'd say. Also two for one cocktails until 9!
