- BackinBracknellBracknell, United Kingdom1,590 contributionsSuperb gardensGardens are superb, very well kept, tranquil and with lots of different areas to explore. There are several pools with lovely reflections of the cathedral. The gardens are definitely the highlight as there's wasn't as much to see inside the Palace as I expected, but it was still interesting. Entrance to the whole site is included with the Gardener's World 2 for 1 card which makes it good value. We had lunch at the cafe which was great as well so a very enjoyable visit all round!Thank you so much for your review and feedback. It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed visiting the gardens and experiencing everything they have to offer. We're glad you also enjoyed lunch in the cafe. We're glad that you enjoyed the outside of the Palace. We hope you can return to Wells soon and have the opportunity to visit inside the Palace and our 14 acres of gardens!Written 12 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- tonyinbrightonBrighton, United Kingdom668 contributionsLovely GardensFabulous buildings and lovely gardens are well worth a visit. There’s a good cafe/restaurant and toilets too just before the entrance. Even though January is not the best month for looking at gardens we had an enjoyable visit as there are good footpaths everywhere. The one thing we didn’t find is a car park but there are two pay & display car parks on nearby South Street. I believe there are 2 spaces for the disabled within the palace grounds.Thank you very much for your review and feedback, Tony! We're so glad you had a lovely visit to the gardens and cafe. - SNibbles35Beckenham, United Kingdom144 contributionsWonderful Gardens and PalaceVisited the Bishop's Palace on a holiday to Wells. Much larger grounds and building than seen from the road. You can walk around the outside of the moat/grounds without paying for entrance. However, the grounds and planted borders are well worth it and the Palace rooms fascinating. We visited early February and there was a winter border, snowdrops and the moat, river and wells were overflowing spectacularly. The rooms in the Palace contained some lovely preserved examples of medieval through to Stuart architecture.Thank you for your review and feedback! We're so glad you could appreciate the historical and horticultural highlights at the Palace. - Kiks_UKBedfordshire, United Kingdom60 contributionsA great time for all the family!I visited in February 24 with my 6 year old and my parents and there was something for all of us to enjoy here. Beautiful gardens and pools, an old church and historic building, dressing up, history, cafe… the list goes on. The kids play area looked really good but sadly it was too wet for us to enjoy it that day. I was very impressed with the guided tour- our guide was very knowledgeable and made the history of the palace really come to life in an engaging way. We spent the morning there then had lunch in town. The cathedral is very nearby if you want to visit both.Thank you so much for your review and feedback! It's lovely to hear that you had such a nice visit to the Palace with your family and enjoyed everything it has to offer. We hope you can visit again on a sunnier and dryer day to make the most of the Dragon's Lair play area! - JackPC32Exeter, United Kingdom514 contributionsReligious Heritage UnveiledThis place is a historical religious stronghold that offers a glimpse into the lives of bishops from bygone eras. It showcases the cope, worn by bishops during the coronation of monarchs since 1900 (with the exception of Charles). Additionally, you can view St. Andrew's Well, the primary well from which the city still draws its water supply. It's a fascinating journey through time and tradition.Thank you for submitting your review, Jack. - gfsc5Perth, Australia1,790 contributionsBeautiful gardensWe bought a joint ticket for The Bishop's Palace and Wells Cathedral. Worth every penny and good value. The gardens at The Bishop's Palace are run by the RHS from what we could see and it really showed. They were stunning. Great plantings in the garden beds, springs, stream, moat and gorgeous backdrops. Photo opportunities galore. The ruins also add to the atmosphere. Really, really nice. We did go into the building itself where there are limited, but interesting, rooms on show. There was a very interesting exhibition on the role of the Bishop of Wells in the various coronations. And a lovely embroidered 'cloak'. Well worth a visit. And get the joint ticket.Thank you for your review. We're so glad you enjoyed visiting the Palace and Gardens (just for clarification, the gardens are managed by the Palace's Head Gardener and they are RHS partner gardens). It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed the historical highlights at the Palace and thought that the Joint ticket was value for money. Very ornate and lots of paintings. The real incredile thing is the gardens. Lots of lovely flowers and really nice to explore. There's a fun dragon park for the kiddos and old castle type ruins to explore.Thank you for your review, James! My partner and I are visiting the Cheddar area in Somerset, so decided to go to Bishops Palace in Wells, admission was £15 each, I have to say having in the last month visited Windsor Castle and Tower of London it really felt poor value for money today. Very little of interest inside, not a single person (guides) within the building to ask anything, walked through the whole place in 15 mins..!!!!! Very very disappointed is all I can say.

Dear Alex. It seems like you may have missed the main attraction which is the 14 acres of stunning, RHS partner gardens! You certainly could not have walked through the 59,500m2 in 15 minutes!! Your £15 ticket is valid for 12 months, so should you wish to return to actually view the gardens, you are very welcome to do so.

Currently celebrating their 800th anniversary; The Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, are offering a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a year's membership for the incredibly best value price of £15. Over 14 acres of beautifully maintained gardens to wander round, with natural wells, and a swan family to admire at close quarters, there are thoughtfully laid out tables and chairs in the grounds, to enjoy social distancing picnics, which is exactly what my friends and I did, with a cheeky bottle of prosecco in the sun.
There's a takeaway breakfast and lunch menu available, tempting ice cream tubs and seriously good coffee.
In fact, everything you need, including an on-site toilet.
I have had many good walks and safe social times in the amazing grounds, every effort is made to ensure government guidelines are adhered to, to help you feel safe whilst visiting.
If you want to have a wonderful place to walk, relax, explore, look no further than the Bishops Palace.
The best £15 I have ever spent!

This place is well worth a visit if you like gardens or history. Sometimes parts of the palace are open too. It is a quiet, tranquil place. Entry is quite expensive for a single visit, but a ticket gives annual entrance. The children's playground is quite small but desperately needs some maintenance.

Visited here on a very wet & extremely windy day.
Due to high winds the gardens were not open due to tree branched falling so they charged £5.00 to look round the palace. It’s a lovely place especially the chapel. Lots of information & the lady directing people was friendly informative & very keen to talk to us.
You can see a lot of the gardens from the windows of the upper floor of the palace which was nice.
We will return in the Summer to see the gardens & the Wells.
Well worth a visit & not over priced.

Beautiful gardens set next to the cathedral and the Market Place so all easily accessible. Cost of entry is £16 per person but using our 2 for 1 Gardeners World voucher the cost of £8 each was much more reasonable. The gardens are lovely with a mix of formal gardens with roses and perennials and a large grassy area for leisure. The Wells and the moat make for interesting vistas. The swans and egrets in the moat are trained to ring the bell for food at the entrance but we unfortunately missed this treat. Well maintained and a joy to walk round. The Bishops Palace itself was a disappointment as there is little of historical interest within the building and it appears to be used as meeting rooms and exhibition spaces. It was our 1st visit to Wells and we were very impressed with it all.

So Lovely in the Autumn
We were back in Wells, during September, and after spending the morning in the Wells Cathedral, walked around The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens. In the early afternoon, the pond was teaming with water fowl, and visitors were strolling the grounds. It was lovely, and very peaceful. We probably spent an hour, just in the Bishop’s Palace & Gardens, but that was after spending 3 hours, plus, in the Cathedral.
I highly recommend including The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens into any visit to Wells, and especially, to the Cathedral. You will be rewarded, and enjoy it. Wear sturdy shoes, as some of the pavements are a bit uneven.

We really enjoyed our visit yesterday, spending a leisurely hour or so wandering around the gardens, and even saw the swans and their cygnets close up! There is a lot of repetition in the beds and borders, but it works really well and the result is absolutely gorgeous. There is a one-way system around the gardens, but within that also plenty of space to wander around freely. We paid £15 with a 2 for 1 voucher, but you also have the option of paying full price (£15 each) with free returns for 12 months. Considering you could easily spend several hours on a single visit, reading a book and enjoying the tranquility, this is excellent value for money.

This was my second visit to the Bishops Palace and gardens. On this occasion I managed to join an organised tour, which brought the Palace and gardens to life.
The traditional gardens are truly spectacular with contemporary sculptures bringing the garden up to date. A cricket match played on the green, giving a wonderful atmosphere and memorable scene.
There are wonderful views to be had as you walk around the walls, and garden. It really is a garden to inspire as well as to contemplate and enjoy.

Lovely walk around the grounds. Really nice option to get aware from the crowds and social distance when the shopping streets get a bit too busy.
Grabbed an ice cream from one of the nearby shops (the fudge shop) and found a nice little spot on the grass to enjoy, whilst listening to the very talented violinist who was performing.

Visited Friday. Easy to enter and one way system in place. Felt safe and social distancing was good. Although we enjoyed the gardens the place itself has little to get excited about and at £15 per ticket was a bit pricey when it was all over in 1 hour
