Erasmus Darwin was one of the greatest polymaths of the 18th century. It has been said that no one since has rivaled his achievements in such a wide range of fields. Indeed, he posited a coherent theory of evolution a full 70 years before his grandson Charles. This beautiful Georgian town house and previous home of Erasmus is dedicated to his life and achievements. Set in an ancient part of Lichfield city centre, the house contains a wealth of information about this fascinating man through videos, audio guides and several hands-on exhibitions and also provides a window into Georgian life. There is also a wonderful herb garden to stroll through and a gift shop. There are plenty of activities and workshops for all ages so do check our website for various events throughout the year!

This is an excellent museum, in the said gentleman's house, to this under-appreciated polymath. Grandfather to the more famous Charles, member of the Lunar Society, early thinker about evolution and the age of the earth, compassionate doctor. The museum successfully combines a very human, domestic story with an appreciation of the intellectual strength of the man. The herb garden outside... More

We've all heard of Charles Darwin, but I had no idea that his grandfather was such an important character himself, and such an influence on Charles Darwin's work. A fascinating place to visit.

Went here with my dad for a visit. We really came to see the Cathedral however thought we would have a look at this exhibit first. It was amazing. So much to see and listen to. He really was such an amazing man for his time. The house is full of information and fun facts. So well organised and lots... More

Trying hard to interest all ages, and to educate us about Erasmus Darwin and his scientific experiments. Unfortunately some X habits were t working, and this gave to impression that the property needed some tender, loving care. But it was free to visit, and it succeeded in educating me about Erasmus Darwin and his important place on the history of... More

Erasmus Darwin is Charles Darwins grandfather. Really interesting guy and his house has been turned into an interactive museum. Free entry. Lovely lady on the door is passionate and knowledgable about the museum. Also have an interactive display for younger children too.

The house of the grandfather of Charles Darwin is really fascinating. The information is well displayed making it easy to read and digest. There are many artifacts in the house and some creepy life size dummies of Erasmus which I really liked but my wife wasn't so keen on!

Although live near Lichfield, and have visited the area loads of times hadn't realised this place existed. Lovely place to visit especially when visiting the Cathedral as it is in the close near by.

Although we had been to Lichfield Cathedral many times, we had never visited this place, which is immediately opposite its front entrance. It is slightly tucked away - next to/behind the cathedral gift shop - and we had no idea how interesting it is. And free! Erasmus was the Grandfather of Charles Darwin - and the originator of many of... More
